I fully support adding NEO Scavenger, it is a a very neat game. Like someone found the dumpster diving of Arcanum so compelling they made a whole game around it.

Feel free to add it yourself if you want.

Oh, and what about Banner Saga?

In my first post about this, I joked about "fighting the good fight with Steam recommendations". Honestly, though, this is what should ultimately be the point of this activity, in my opinion. Sure, through our initial recommendations, we establish our taste in games, so you put a bunch of classics and Top 70 games there. But going forward, I think we should think of the curator as a means of giving more exposure to less popular, but nonetheless good RPGs and RPG-likes. Underrail is an obvious example of a game like this to me, or Expeditions: Conquistador. We've already had some complaints over recommending Dark Souls, but honestly, Dark Souls is so popular already that a codes recommendation or lack thereof changes absolutely nothing - putting it on the list merely informs people of our preferences rather than affect the game in any way.

Now, whether Early Access games should be recommended is a separate question, and at first glance I'd be inclined to say no, but it might be worthwhile to discuss.

Underrail is Early Access and is already there, ditto Xulima. We've already decided we don't give a fuck about this.

Still-controversial Early Access titles ala pre-release Wasteland 2 and Pillars of Eternity will of course not be added.

Otherwise, I agree, and that's more-or-less my plan.

If the goal is to shine the spotlight on lesser known games that deserve attention, than including popular games is useful for that. People will look at the list and think hey I liked Dark Souls, I wonder else I might like on here.

If the entire list was Underrails and E:Cs, then someone might look at it and think I don't know what any of this is, skip.

Also, we show up on store pages of the popular games, so someone just looking at the Dark Souls store page would see our curator list.

Yeah, that's more or less what I meant when I said it informs people of our preferences. You bring up an interesting point though - now that we've passed the 3k followers milestone, we are visible by default on a recommended game's store page, unless they blacklist us manually. So maybe one useful way of thinking about what games should be recommended, is asking "Do we think people who liked this game will also like other games we recommend?". So, there's one argument against putting Bioware games on the list. :smug: Although, it's also an argument against putting Dark Souls on the list as well, I suppose.

Fuck BioWare. They don't make cRPG's. They make romance strategy simulators. Maybe TCancer can list BioWare games?

So, these two Early Access games:

Legends of Eisenwald
NEO Scavenger

Are these worthy of inclusion yet/at all?

ain't much of a curation if you just throw every steam game on there, not sure I'm quite understanding what the point of this is if the criteria is so broad that you could replace it with a general RPG search on steam store

I'm being fairly careful about what games I add, but I've heard several times that NEO Scavenger is great, and Eisenwald is of course a longtime Codex "pet project".

Might want to wait until an early access title comes out before you put it on a "MUST GET" RPG list. Just saying. I would have said the same thing about MMXL if we had been putting it on a list when it was still in EA.

Agreed.

Eisenwald is a Codex pet and we have good relations to the developer, but let's wait for review and consensus before adding games.

I like the way the overview page of the Codex group invites people to come and experience the wonders of GD... :M

Yeah, although that's actually a bit out of date because new users can't access GD anymore.

Part of the reason I joined the RPG Codex is to find decent RPG. Where the heck are the sort of games I used to play.

Sorry for quoting from another thread but this ! People join Codex to find decent RPGs and we recommend fucking Dark Souls !! Is this where we have come to ?
You don't add games that are what the Codex used to stand for because they are in early access (and rightfully so) and you add that clusterfuck of anime and rolling around the bad guy until he commits seppuku.

WTF is Neo Scavenger? Has this game proven itself to be incline? Also why is Eschalon 1 on the list, it's not that good. Same for Banner Saga.

It's a pretty fun survival game which features a simple skill system that allows you to interact with varied encounters using text. It does have a pretty interesting combat system and it features an open postnuclear world full of randomly-placed items.

Not sure if it counts as an RPG though.

Infi should ask the Codex before adding any indie game that reaches his mind.

NEO Scavenger is awesome and definitely worthy of the list. Great survival game, lots of really hard choices, tons of options in combat (run for cover, roll, kick down, crawl, etc...), roguelike-like permadeath, complex crafting system and a lot more.

It better be good - I only purchased it as it was 14th on the Codex all time list! Who voted for it? Dark Souls is even above my beloved SS2 and Ultima Underworld 1 and even Ultima IV.

1 Planescape: Torment
2 Fallout 1
3 Fallout 2
4 Baldur's Gate 2: Shadows of Amn
5 Arcanum: Of Steamworks and Magick Obscura
6 Vampire: The Mascarade - Bloodlines
7 The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind
8 Fallout: New Vegas
9 Gothic 2
10 Wizardry 8
11 Deus Ex
12 Neverwinter Nights 2 - Mask of the Betrayer
13 Jagged Alliance 2
14 Dark Souls

It is very good, just not necessarily similar to most of the games on that list. For me, it scratched that Gothic itch of dangerous exploration with unforgiving melee combat, but Crooked Bee sees it as a dungeon crawler, and spiritual successor to Ultima Underworld, so your mileage may vary.

I'm fine with Dark Souls being recommended by the curator page. It was in the Codex recommends list and is ultimately a good game.

But not a good RPG, which is why it shouldn't be on the list. But the Codex has changed and this is a part of its new direction etc etc.

If DS2 gets on there the descent into absurdity will be complete.

Dark Souls does not excel in the characteristics classically attributed to the role playing genre. Whilst a decent action-RPG, the Codex wasn’t formed to celebrate or promote the redeeming factors of Diablo and Dark Souls. It is not our creed or our mission, and whilst we may enjoy those games we don’t place it in our list of official games RPGCodex recommends. Although Infinitron and co. may personally recommend those games, that is not what RPGCodex is about and it should be OFF the list. It promotes inconsistency, confusion… and hilarity.

It's a beat em up with stats. Player skill is much more important in deciding the outcome of the battle than any of character's stats. In fact many people finish the game not leveling up even once and with shit gear, proving that the focus is on player's reflexes, not tactical skills.
You can come very close if not actually able to beat Fallout at level 1.
