Oh this again won't it be fun
Stop filling the Steam list with shit and we won't have to go through it again.

So sayeth the sole founder and hivemind ruler of the Codex?the Codex wasn’t formed to celebrate or promote the redeeming factors of Diablo and Dark Souls. It is not our creed or our mission, and whilst we may enjoy those games we don’t place it in our list of official games RPGCodex recommends
It's funny that nobody has realized that the exact same complaints hold true for System Shock 2 (props to anybody consistent enough to demand that SS2 be removed from the list as well - not that we'll do it)

It's possible to finish SS2 without good reflexes if you build your character right - I did and I'm dyspraxic. That's not true for DS from what I've heard. It's funny that nobody has realized that the exact same complaints hold true for System Shock 2 (props to anybody consistent enough to demand that SS2 be removed from the list as well - not that we'll do it)
Yes, I fully remember the founding fathers signing a letter about what's an RPG and what's not, deciding what kind of game should be recommended and what not. That's what the Codex was formed for. Unless it's changed in the decade I've been visiting the site.
Oh, the glory and purity of the 2002's!All in all, there is little doubt in my mind that Freelancer is, indeed an RPG.
Proven to be full of shit, you're moving goalposts, eh?
Dark Souls is in the list because it was voted #14 best RPG on our list. System Shock 2 was #22. That's the result of 234 people voting, not a little mod circle. As opposed to one butthurt guy in the forums fabricating "the mission of the Codex".
I'm fine with Dark Souls being recommended by the curator page. It was in the Codex recommends list and is ultimately a good game.
But not a good RPG, which is why it shouldn't be on the list. But the Codex has changed and this is a part of its new direction etc etc.
If DS2 gets on there the descent into absurdity will be complete.

You had to know it was comingOh this again won't it be fun
And what kind of strategy games are we talking about here? Turn based, real time, grand, minor,4x,laptop guy without stats,...?so are you keeping dark souls ?
PS. im going through TC remommendations and surprise surprise they only have strategy games there. Who would have thought
This nigga thinks there's anime in Dark Souls!Part of the reason I joined the RPG Codex is to find decent RPG. Where the heck are the sort of games I used to play.
Sorry for quoting from another thread but this ! People join Codex to find decent RPGs and we recommend fucking Dark Souls !! Is this where we have come to ?
You don't add games that are what the Codex used to stand for because they are in early access (and rightfully so) and you add that clusterfuck of anime and rolling around the bad guy until he commits seppuku.
Like I said before in the Top70 thread, I think Dark Souls is as much of an RPG as Castlevania: Symphony of the Night, which in my opinion is not very much. Still, it's close enough, and a truly excellent game, so there's no shame in having it on the list. Same as there was no shame in having Codex review the likes of Pathologic or Mark of the Ninja, which generated some butthurt from the "but but but it's not an rpg!" crowd as well.
That said, you could remove it and I wouldn't care. As we observed earlier, the only thing it does is promote the Codex curator as both DS games are very popular, and now we show up on their store pages. Whether that's a good or bad thing is unclear to me at the moment.

This is, word for word, my opinion as well.

Ditto. Whether or not promoting the Codex curator list is desirable is really the only question here.

I feel like some people believe that the recommended games list should be a kind of ideological statement, a manifesto of the most desirable qualities in an RPG. The problem with that is that there is no such thing, there's (obviously) not even consensus on what an RPG is, much less a good one. Closest thing is the Top70, and you do have Dark Souls there, for better or worse. However, even if we did have the consensus, putting a manifesto like that on Steam serves little purpose. If you're a Codex regular, you are very likely to already have at least heard of all the games we're recommending - I certainly have.
The ultimate purpose of the curator is to actively encourage incline by giving a bit more visibility to good games that need it. In that sense, it's a good idea to put the likes of Neo Scavenger there, even though it appears on no top lists and no vote was held regarding its inclusion. And when I say "good games", I mean ones that agree with the most basic Codexian values - values which transcend the RPG genre - games which are well designed, complex, revel in being games rather than interactive movies, engage the player and demand attention rather than ferrying them across a linear corridor while they press A for Awesome, have real depth and reward thinking on one's own rather than following a quest compass. I find that whether I go into the Strategy section, the Adventure forum, or GRPGD, this is what people like and focus on.
And if that's the criteria, Dark Souls fits very well, and it's probably not a bad idea to have people who like Dark Souls check out our list. Should be fine so long as we don't start recommending Boredomlands just because it's popular.
you know whyWhy is Jagged Alliance 2 not on the list?!
