Unlike most of the reviews I saw of DL, the review of it from rpgdot showed the reviewer is an rpg fan and not some dickhead drooling over hellgate london and doom 4 and pissed he got stuck with reviewing a stupid non leet game. In fact, he knew he was going to catch shit for reviewing it as he saw fit and not going with the rest of the angry community, and the other staff at rpgdot. That shows he has balls and autonomy and isn't a fucking lemming.

Most of the things I've seen mentioned in a lot of reviews are things that most RPG fans would be concerned with though. The barren towns, the missing and broken skills and character creation, the lack of the minimap, and so forth have all been mentioned in most reviews.

While I haven't played San Andreas yet, in GTA3 and Vice City gang members would fight back and attack you on sight if you harmed one of them in their presence. However, the consequence was only momentary, as running away would stop this... Though, in GTA3, the gangs - the Diablos, Colombian Cartel, mobsters and Triads - would attack you on sight as you progressed trough the story (as you were basically forced to make attacks against these organizations or they high-ranking members).

From what I heard of SA, you can start gang wars and defeat some gangs to gain their territory - this is supposed to permanently end that rival gang.

The GTA games are just too linear and paint by the numbers to be called RPGs. Like Bioware games, they're just adventure titles. Which is just fine but the whole concept of an RPG is very watered down when you start applying it to GTA...

No, in RPGs decision making is mostly in combat. Which enemy to attack, what spell to use, run or defend, use a healing item. Decision making in real CRPGs is what determines if you win at combat or not. The less combat depends on decision making and the more it depends on reflexes the more of an Action RPG it is until you even lose the RPG part. This is where GTA is. It's not an RPG simply because combat success depends on your reflexes, and the only role of decision making is what weapon to use... which barely makes any difference at all.

All rival gangs shoot you on site right from the beginning.

i am playing GTA SA right now. the inclusion of stats feels rather needless so far.

It is, really. That's why the first two games didn't have them. It's just another little thing for gameplay though. The thing is, the stats don't really "matter" yeah you get stronger as time goes on, but you basically just end up maxing everything out. There's not even a little decision making as to character built...
