Elder Scrolls Rumor: The Elder Scrolls: Oblivion Remake from Virtuous Games

Why remake Oblivion (generic European medieval fantasy) first instead of Morrowind (unique setting) I wonder? Maybe Morrowind is next??

A remake of The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion is in development at Virtuos Games

An unexpected leak from a verified and reliable source suggests Virtuos Games is reviving Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion for modern consoles.

While The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim is the best-selling game in the franchise (and one of the best-selling single-player titles of all time), The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion holds a special place in the hearts of long-time fans. Unfortunately, it hasn't aged too well. Unless heavily modified, The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion doesn't hold up compared to Skyrim.

Thankfully, Virtuos Games is working on a way to fix this.

Don't even try looking for this leak online - it has since been taken down.
According to a since-deleted post by a since-deleted user, Virtuos Games is working on five different projects, arguably the biggest of which is project "Altar", which they're describing as a "remaster/remake of Oblivion." According to the source, it's still unclear if it's going to be a full remake but the development team uses a pairing system "using both an Unreal Engine 5 project, and the old Oblivion one." The user, who claims to work for Virtuos Games Paris, says that the European studio is in charge of the project but Black Shamrock is helping the studio "for the art."

The user believes that the remaster/remake will be out before next year ends or by early 2025, "depending mostly on if it's a remake or remaster."

Interestingly, fans are working on a remake of The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion in Skyrim's in-game engine, which is scheduled to come out in 2025 after spending more than a decade in development.

The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion was ahead of its time even though time has done it dirty.
While we'd recommend that you take most leaks with a grain of salt, a mod for the r/GamingLeaksAndRumours subreddit verified the information of the source, proving that he's a former employee of Virtuos Games.

Remakes aren't Bethesda Softworks or Bethesda Game Studios' usual MO. In fact, outside of the multiple re-releases and ports of The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, Bethesda hasn't done a remake of an older title since, well, forever. Then again, it still isn't technically working on one - the development has been outsourced to Virtuos Games.

It's unclear if this project started development before or after Microsoft acquired ZeniMax Media since Bethesda would still have to green-light the project since it owns the IP.

Obviously fake
Using UE5 even though Beth is still using updated Gamebryo makes no sense. Hate Gamebryo as much as you want, all attempts to recreate Bethesda features/gameplay using Unreal Engine were complete soulless failures.

I would lean towards not real if they supposedly don't know at this stage whether it's going to be a remake or a remaster and are planning to release in less than 2 years

If they proceed with this I hope they change the retarded level scaling and keep the moddability of the game.

They would also need to change how leveling your char works, so you don't have to bother raising skills irrelevant for the build you wanna play, in order to not fuck yourself with attribute modifiers. And no, you should not have to mod this shit out AGAIN, like when the game was originally released. They need to put some real effort into this shit, if it ever becomes a reality.

The engine thing doesn't sound real at all. The remakes that do have the original running underneath (Monkey Island, those Final Fantasy mobile ports with new typos and terrible graphics) are much, much lower power and, more importantly, more stable (a crash in one means a crash for the whole thing, so tying stability to Oblivion's engine is a disaster waiting to happen). I do expect a re-release for modern consoles with bug fixes that have been in the unofficial patch for literally a decade and some graphical tweaks (lighting, maybe better faces) will come eventually given how modern consoles have nothing but recycled content to include.

"Could be a remaster released next year or full remake for release on early 2025" is too vague. Of course Bethesda has discussed this internally and other studios have probably approached them, but this sounds more like extremely early plans than a leak.

Probably 'bout to receive a cease and desist like every dumb ass modding team porting an old game into another engine.
Except the developers of Skyblivion aren't retards and have struck a deal with Bethesda long ago, they are safe and cozy. The same with OpenMW and Skywind.

On the main topic, I heard some weird stuff about it being on Unreal Engine 5, but that's definitely nonsense. But I could see Microsoft wanting to cash in with them buying Bethesda and port Oblivion onto the current version of Creation Engine, it's basically half the job for a next TES release, people would gobble it up. Hell, even I would play it if they make the game actually playable this time.

Maybe cause UE5 is not only barely production ready it's an instanced "kitbash" parade (unique assets would be too much w/o remote asset streaming) and it's a good excuse to remake an already instanced game bc. obvious instancing ( lack of unique assets) can be written down to "faithfulness".

Never heard of that dev. Looked at their work and it seems all they've ever done is port games to other systems. It doesn't look like they've ever created anything original. I'm not even seeing much experience in remastering games.

Skyrim's core systems, like combat and dialogue, are not good. Why do people port games to that platform?
Oblivion's are worse, and the Oblivion in Skyrim project claims to be more of a remake that fixes Oblivion's shittiest parts (copy-past landmass) which justifies it existing somewhat. Morrowind in Oblivion is just a retarded concept, especially with OpenMW.

Imagine if someone went back in time to like 2004, or 2005, and blew up Bethesda Game Studios.

We would've probably colonised Mars by now and made cold fusion a reality.

You'd kinda expect them to do something with Morrowind first, albeit that's much more likely to be a full blown remake. Just seems like the people that want to play Oblivion still can on the platforms that matter to Microsoft (PC and Xbox).
Technically you can play it on PS5, but it's streamed and missing the Shivering Isles... :decline: but Bethesda's parent company probably doesn't care much about that.
