Yeah, I imagine the Goons, 4chan, Reddit and pretty much everyone will pack their shit in if it's still a FIRST POST! circle-jerk when the game goes live.

Doubt it. But since obsidian left options open for paypal submission for a while after kickstarter end, perhaps he'll do the same for latecomers. I'll might scrape up some funds untill then.

There are still options for latecomers, but they'll be a bit more expensive, won't include everything that timely backers received, and will never feature lifetime insurance.

By the way, I found the answer I'd wanted to find to how arcade-y/hardcore the game will be. It's pretty much as expected:

Fuck me, Blaine, are you sure that it's you who's given them $500 and not the other way around? Although if I'd given away that much I'd be desperately trying to convert people too, just so they'd reassure me that I'm not a gullible sucker :)

I'd like to delicately raise one point: shut up already; this *is* an MMOG. An MMOG with an additional single-player campaign and a limited private multiplayer mode; but an MMOG nonetheless. Look at those damned pledge rewards for a second and tell me that all those pledges would have been made if they hadn't essentially been in-game purchases in the MMO world. I know that you've bought into the whole "shared universe" nomenclature, which you see as something completely unlike an MMO, but for God's sake, don't let Star Citizen take all your critical faculties away.

This project looks pretty sweet, MMOness aside, but its really surprising how much they've been able to raise. Seriously? $6,408,821? Jesus.

My best guess is that the demographics are handling the lion's share of this; space sim fanatics, by-and-large, are probably well-established old fogies with white-collar jobs, and the PE crowd is more of an unwashed masses affair? That, and I suppose space-sim fans are more sex genre deprived than cRPG nerds and others?

Either way, I like that Kickstarter PC game campaigns don't seem to have a formulaic recipe for what works and what doesn't, beyond "you better be legit, sucka!"

Yes, space sim enthusiasts are hideously genre-deprived. We've basically gotten the X series, Evochron (which was made by one person), a few Freespace 2 mods, a couple of open-source projects like Oolite and Vega Strike, and Freelancer (which isn't my favorite Chris Roberts game) in the past 13 years. Most space sim fans will only enjoy about half of those due to their personal tastes.

The average Project Eternity donor contributed $53.88, while the average Star Citizen donor contributed $69.46. Star Citizen also had approximately 13,000 more donors overall. I'd say the disparity is due to several factors: The aforementioned genre starvation of space sim fans; the fact that Star Citizen has a lot more to show people in terms of tech demos, in-depth game mechanics and lore; Star Citizen's pledge tiers and add-ons are much more devilishly manipulative than Project Eternity's; and Star Citizen's crowdfunding campaign was open for a month longer than Project Eternity's.

I was wondering when this plebeian argument would crop up. $565 isn't going to break my bank, and I didn't pledge that amount based upon anyone's opinion but my own. I've said it before and I'll say it again: If you believe in a crowdfunding project, you ought to be willing to take a risk on it. I won't pretend that my donations are fully altruistic and not at all motivated by the stuff I'll receive in return... the stuff does act as an incentive to pledge more than I otherwise would. I was born at night, but not last night. I don't need the approval of some hambeasts on the Internet to feel good about myself.

As for the MMO-ness, by the definition a lot of you are using, a popular persistent Minecraft server with PvP enabled would also essentially be an MMO. This dilutes the term to such a degree that it ceases to have any real meaning.

It upsets me that people use the reductive term "MMO" in this case not because I'm an apologist, but because if you read Chris's in-depth explanations of how the persistent universe will operate, it's plain to see that an entirely new term is needed to describe it. I pity people who are unable to parse the world without applying bog-standard, commonplace labels to everything they encounter and leaving it at that.

At current, Star Citizen's persistent universe will be like an odd combination of the Dark Souls drop-in/drop-out system, lobby- and instance-based games such as Guild Wars, Diablo II and certain first-person shooters/RTSes, and traditional MMOs as they're commonly defined and understood.

While "massively multiplayer online game" might technically be a proper term to apply to Star Citizen when interpreted literally, the acronym "MMO" has accumulated certain subjective connotations over the years. Many of those connotations are erroneous when presumed to apply to Star Citizen.

Well, some of them, sure, but I think others are apt, or still remain to be seen. It may not be an MMO in every single way that WoW is an MMO, but from what I've read, that "persistent" component of the game qualifies for the term. IMO, the problem is that people are too hung up on the aforementioned predispositions toward MMOs to be willing to accept that some of them are actually very play-worthy time sinks. Having no monthly fee is winning half the battle right there, and if they can control (or, preferably, sidestep altogether) the "play to win" angle, I'd actually consider a persistent multiplayer setting to be a significant selling point.

On a vaguely related note, you seem to be up on your space sims; is Starlancer worth playing for someone who isn't a genre fanatic? I've got a copy that came in a 3-pack bundle (with Metal Gear Solid and some Red Baron-esque affair that I can't be bothered with), but I've never installed it.

I pledge JUST for the 50+ single player "Wing Commander-like" game. Could cares less for the MMO shared-universe part. If it's anything like playing WC than it's money well spent. I loved those games!

Idiotic forum posters don't reflect on the game itself, as anyone who supported Project Eternity should know all too well.

In Chris's live stream today, he confirmed that individual thrusters will be mappable, that macros will be allowed, re-confirmed that there will be support for advanced controls, and essentially put paid to the idea that you can point-and-click your way through combat a la Freelancer. He also said that he'd like to "reverse the trend" of separating PvE from PvP combat. In fact, everything he said today (that wasn't a rehash) was music to my ears.

There'll be a video up at some point. I'll throw together a concise transcript if there isn't a good one already. In the meantime, enjoy this excerpt of the live stream chat box:
