So how exactly is he able to create a next-next-gen game with advanced physics and unprecedented scale, while Obsidian can make a tablet quality Baldur's Gate clone at best? Yes, i know he got almost twice as much jewgoldz, but still, that's half as much as CDPRed needed to make Twitcher 2. And people are paid with potatoes around here.
Industry investors. He was quite upfront about it.
Yes. And not just small time investors. There were talks about a 10 million dollar investment. Counting the crowdfunding source, that makes it 16 million.

I'd also imagine Chris has spent a couple million of his own money to get the game to this point. Any sane investor would first want to see someone with a large personal stake in their venture so they he's not fooling around.

I've never played a WC or Freelancer, but I like outer space, and this game looks p cool, so I threw some monies at it. I look forward to spamming my PEWPEW LAZARBEEMS button.

Oh yeah? I had an Internet connection in 1991. Also, my post count and brofist:post ratio are much higher. Hell, you don't even have a proper avatar. No one likes you. I have a larger penis. You are terrible person and I hope you die.

Having said that, fucking Hell. I swore I wouldn't add this shit on, but I couldn't help myself. It won't be purchasable (only capture-able) or insurable in the final game, and I wanted a fighter to go with the Constellation anyway. I could have bought a nice new briar pipe for that.

Somehow I missed this game entirely until now. What's the consensus so far? Privateer-like?

Please say yes.

Yes. Check out the Star Citizen website, read the updates, and watch the videos to get a good idea. The persistent universe will be like Privateer on crack, plus there's a 45-mission branching single-player campaign (just like the Wing Commanders) and user-hosted, mod-able multiplayer. You can skip the persistent universe part and still play single-player Star Citizen with some pals or alone, like a modern Privateer.

Or if you're like IDtenT, it's an arcadey casual pay-to-win MMO and all the things Chris has said about it and shown us are just lies to get our money. Although speaking of that, the fucker has been absolutely demonically manipulative in getting people to pledge.

Yeah... parsing all the information can be difficult. It's a bit chaotic. To get the full picture you have to read all the updates, watch all the videos, read the Reddit AmA, read various design docs, and even read Twitter and Facebook comments (ugh) for official clarification and statements that may not exist elsewhere. It's a lot to take in.

I'm not going to sort through Twitter and Facebook comments to get a basic idea of the game. The website screams "trying to please everyone by saying too much and therefore too little" to me.

Not if you're a better pilot than I am.

I didn't get the Constellation or Vanduul fighter for power, but because the Constellation is just a great base ship to have for free for trading (big cargo hold), killing intermediate AIs, mining if that exists, congregating with your pals, etc.

The Vanduul fighter was more of a strategic purchase than anything. Fighters themselves cannot be captured via disabling and docking (they're too small), which necessarily means that to get them, you'd have to successfully capture the carrier itself. Only a large team of players could do that. Once captured, the Vanduul fighter can't be insured, either. That's why they cost $300 to outright purchase with lifetime insurance (for backers).

Also, it looks like a Kilrathi ship.

It reeks of pay-to-win if you don't know all the details, but there will be fighters of equivalent power (the Hornet, at the moment) which can be obtained normally. The Hornet and Vanduul fighter have differing specs but are the same "tier." It's a collector/vanity item. Specifically, the Vanduul fighter is slightly faster and has unusually powerful main cannons, but slightly less armor and no other armament options besides its cannons, while the Hornet also has missiles and a Class 4 hardpoint.

I've spent $565. I spent $1,000 on Wasteland 2, but that was before the massive flood of Kickstarters. Can't afford to spend $3,000 a month on these fucking things.

Will this game have a monthly fee?

No monthly fee. Non-backers can buy the game for $60 post-release, and get the single-player campaign, user-hosted mod-able multiplayer, and free access to the persistent universe. Future expansions to the single-player campaign (like Secret Missions for Wing Commander) will cost like $10-15. Monthly updates to the persistent universe/user-hosted multiplayer will be free.

Also, the tiers you see available now are the post-crowdfunding tiers. The Kickstarter ended yesterday.

Didn't pay for it for total lack of jewgolds (Obsidian, bicycle and PC upgrade got all + girlfriend car repairs), but I would if I had the chance.
Will likely buy later, I like space sims, plus I plan buying the Rift and it would be a Rift-native game.

Oh, so you can't back any longer? Saves me that head-ache I guess.

Shit I might otherwise be interested in escapes my notice on the Internet all the time, too.

Relevant example: If you registered for the Roberts Space Industries website before Star Citizen was officially announced, you got a (digital) Golden Ticket. It's good for a special ship decal in-game, and also has at least a 25% chance of turning its owner into a braggadocios asshole who joins a player-founded clan reserved for ticket holders only. It's called Gold Wing. Their membership is functionally illiterate, and they all have large, obnoxious golden signatures that they display on the RSI forums. Essentially an "I have a ticket and you don't" circle-jerk.

I hate people.

At least you'll know who to mercilessly atomize in game.
