Assassin's Creed: Altair's Chronicles (2008)

ACAC-01.png

No leap of faith, no real assassination or stealth, tacked-on minigames for pickpocketing and interrogating, a design close to Tomb Raider Legend DS, a number of sound effects identical across both games... I had that persistent feeling that it was originally an entirely different game and only got an Assassin's Creed paintjob late in development.

A cursory online search disproved my impression but since the other AC on DS (Discovery) is excellent and very similar to the true 2.5D Chronicles trilogy, it's immedietely noticeable how painfully derivative this one is.

The controls are serviceable and slavishly follow platformer trappings along with a hack'n-slash combat system that tries to be rich and varied, though in practice none of it matters as button-mashing will get you through anyway. The touchscreen is barely used, making it one of the many DS games that play just fine in landscape mode.

The graphics are pretty nice for the DS. The framerate isn't great and many elements are sprites where HD resolutions would shatter the illusion, but on a small screen you're unlikely to notice. All in all it's pleasant to look at.

Like Tomb Raider Legend it's one of these games that doesn't do anything terribly wrong, but doesn't really stand out in any capacity either. Typical play&uninstall fodder.

The animations in Gothic are quite good.
I'm especially impressed by how life like the mid-level-management-pose is.

Beating up Lefties feels good.

They become so much more reasonable afterwards.

The global taunt radiated by the commando on the other side of the river is too much for the AI to handle.

and it lets me wreck and capture its bases from within in a very cosy manner :martini:

also I had the right idea to set up a few sandbags around this place where the now non-existent captured Hand of NOD used to be. When the confused taunted rape mob eventually noticed the Hand's existence, it was wiped within seconds, but the sandbags let me keep a zone of control that I could extend a wee bit to the left and lay down an airstrip for them sweet stealth tankus.

Jenkins... what's with the yellow turrets growing out on the left?

No reason to be alarmed, sarge, turrets are NOD-patented buildings

, these screenshots are from Shadow of Destiny (a.k.a. Shadow of Memories), a Playstation 2 game released in 2001 and later ported to PC. Technically in the adventure genre, it's light on gameplay and also somewhat short, but it does feature an entertaining story in which the protagonist is "fated to die" and must circumvent each of the ways in he dies by using a time-travel device that allows access to earlier eras of the small German town in which he resides. There are five different endings, followed by another two that are unlocked after completing the first five.

For those wondering -- I strongly suggest playing the PS2 version. The PC version requires extra tinkering to get up and running (which is fine), but it suffers from instability (crashes due to alt-tabbing), worse graphics than the PS2 version (lower-resolution textures in certain places and worse-looking effects at times) and poor audio quality.

Also there are technically more than 5 original endings, as endings A and B have alternative versions that can be accessed through different choices/actions, and while they aren't required to unlock the 'true' endings, they're still fun to find.
