Finally managed to beat Synthetik; great game that does play/feel better than screenshots convey. My only gripe is the lack of fleshy enemies that you can eviscerate. But the gun sounds and the exploding robots are well done, its still satisfying to play. The isometric art and design are gorgeous. The balance is a bit uneven and your luck with items can make or break a run, although making do with what you find is half of the fun.

Still, I liked this add-on much more than "Unfinished Business" for TR1.

Verdict: :3/5:

Warning: Big Doom dump incoming! Lots of Ribbiks maps because I'm a fanboy.

Crumpets

01bbcar.jpg

024xdbt.jpg

9 short maps with low monster count but still fairly challenging thx to tight ammo and monster placement.
03nyfoz.jpg

Tea. Earl Grey. Hot.

At first I thought this was a joke. But there is a non-secret orange key hidden in the map that unlocks the BFG. Still... wtf?

Jumpwad

01i1f56.png

02ouich.png

7 maps. No monsters. No weapons. Just collecting gems. Pressing the LMB simulates an Archvile-jump. Very polished level design.
03utdnh.png

04uicsr.png

Conveyor belts and ramps.

06pueyk.png

08sriet.png

I had to play this in PrBoom+ because GZDoom can't handle the snow in maps 05 and 06. Even then, there is still a noticeable performance drop. I know, GZDoom lololol. But Eviternity has maps with more and thicker snow than this that run just fine.

09p8dpl.png

103kiy2.png

Surprise!

11wbi1s.png

The evil eye also behaves like an Archvile, and you have to coordinate the jumps.

Map 07 is great. But this music puzzle at the end is like a middle finger to completionists. Here is what you are expected to do:
Download the midi of this map, open it with a midi editor, read the notes at specific spots based on hints that are scattered in the map, know music theory to somehow translate those notes into the correct numbers.

Summer of '69

6 maps that weren't good enough for Sunlust.
02ihewu.jpg

03oedd8.jpg

04xsfu3.jpg

Some maps have bits and pieces that were reused in Sunlust, like this room.

05ftc2b.jpg

Here it is in Sunlust.

06bqebn.png

081efb1.jpg

This map is nearly identical to Sunlust's map 24 but it has a few different fights. I like this ice/glacier theme. Shame it was changed into a standard cave.

09s0cv3.jpg

10nsf5d.jpg

Cool effect with teleporting Cacos.

11zlisd.jpg

This is still here.

13rvclh.jpg

The big slaughter fest at the end is also the same, except for the 5 Archviles that are let loose after you've killed everything. :argh:

14vnf8o.jpg

Map 06 looks like it belongs to Italo Doom. You die within 2 seconds before you even know where to go.

Swim With The Whales

4 very hard, blue maps (except map 01, that's just a walking sim intro).

Sunlust (again)

02k3d6k.jpg

01alcep.jpg

I've been revisiting some megaWADs in order to properly UV-Max them without saves, mainly Eviternity and Ancient Aliens. And since Sunlust is my favorite megaWAD, I should give it the same treatment. I've beaten the first 20 maps, so far, but I'm expecting to run into a brick wall soon (maybe in map 24).

The best kind of secret: Here is a BFG and 2 Megas. You can keep what's left of it if you survive this mess.

10dncru.jpg

Map 15 was the first big jump in difficulty.

11y5far.jpg

The accompanying txt for map 32 is funny:
Tired of maps being too hard? Then I could recommend: Practice! Practice is fun, and good for you! Kill 2 cyberdemons in a small as shit room with bumpy floors or face 50 revenants without any room to dodge! Everything is fun if you just practice!

Been shotgunning barons since 1994? Try map32 of Sunlust! It's a good map, I promise!

“Best map ever” - Doomguy
“Shit. 0/5. Won't play again” - Anonymous
I used to hate this map because of this Archvile crap at the end. It seemed to be purely based on luck, even with saves. But now I found a consistent method with a near 100% success rate. I still wouldn't call it a great map, but it's not so bad, and I've learned a few things. :M

12bee3z.jpg

14exc8x.png

This fight with the switching Archviles is just fun.

15o5dg9.png

Map 20
:despair:

16ktfbb.jpg

Everyone who has played Sunlust should remember this door from map 20.

17r9c7a.jpg

I still don't have a good strategy for this, except to shoot the Cyberdemon and hope he retaliates before he teleports away. He will hit everything, leaving an "easy" clean-up. If he doesn't cooperate, it's a coin toss.
I like this map, but actually playing it saveless was a bit of a grind thanks to this part.
I'm going to tackle the remaining 10 maps at another time because Doom fatigue is setting in.
Just one more thing...

Overboard

02kxfwo.png

01hpirh.png

6 new maps by mouldy/Cyriak, the guy who made Going Down. Instead of having to find the keycard for the elevator, you have to find fuel for your boat. Each map consists of one small island with mouldy's typical humor and "chaotic evil" level design.

07z3iik.jpg

But wait, there is more!
0950exc.png

Map slots 08-14 are NG+ versions of the same maps.

10cje1d.png

The difference becomes immediately apparent.

11roc5v.jpg

Even more chaos.

1287emj.jpg

Then you get to the True Ending with a nod to Going Down fans.
13cld1t.png

You winned the game!!!

146rf4p.png

You arrive at home, the same place from Going Down's map 30.

15laevx.png

Not again!

1618cb0.png

Ok, that's enough Doom for now.

White Women detected, Kill kill kill! It's Tsukihime remake, Arcuied route!

tvMpPdx.png

Dayum, Shiki doesn't fuck around!

Z9HZoXb.png

She's okay anyways. True ancestors are like op as fuck, also she wants you to help her kill a vampire or she would insta kill you. The vampire must be some sparkling faggot lurking... hiding around.

D61ho0s.png

Actually, no. He's a deranged apostle, one of the twenty-seven dead apostle ancestors. Basically, they were "food" for the true ancestors but they broke free of their influence and do whatever they want.

D3rXKUW.png

y5G3Ioi.png

He's not hiding at all, he doesn't give a fuck.

M6pgoWN.png

His actual power is not fire but ice, he just uses fire cause he's always cold and consumes blood for warmth. When he fights Arc he gets mortally wounded, losing all his blood then awakens his true power.

yxWmyJQ.png

Shiki eventually prevails with the help of Arc. Vlov dies and the random killings in Tokyo stop...

BZwemSG.png

Actually, nope. You get attacked outside your house by a vampire then your teacher saves your ass, revealing that he's a executor from the church. She's disgusted by the fact you're friendly with a vampire. She's not that importart in Arc route.

To be continue...

If you like Visual Novels Tsukihime remake it's honestly quite good. Only one route is translated.
