How did you get the sword?
I find lately that I prefer just firing a Rope Arrow and carefully jumping atop one of those circles and try to grab the sword, instead of going all the way to the top and having to avoid those three guards.
You can also shoot a control mechanism of sorts, which will make the sword fall down, but it will make noise and alert the guards...

That's exactly what I did, it seems like the most hassle-free way to do it. Not that taking care of those three guards is hard, just clump them together, throw a flash grenade, and bonk them on the head. But I prefer to avoid confrontation altogether, like a real thief would.

Beat it. Now I can move in good conscience onto Colony Ship.

Mvp of the game (even more so tho the perk which opens the whole map for the price of 1 settler per glade).

Back from rl. Time for some more Doom. Played a few wads. Let's go from worst to best.

Insanity Edged

01x9fu4.jpg

I can say one positive thing about this. It looks really nice, and I admire the amount of work that went into it just to tell a nonsense creepypasta story. Level design is mostly going through samey, dark, and detailed tech base corridors, looking for that one switch I haven't pressed yet. A few boss fights. It's ... okay.

Break Point

017kflf.jpg

Ever since I played Paradise, I've been looking for more wads that use the Supercharge mod. But Break Point doesn't really do much with the new and updated monsters and weapons, and seems to use the mod mainly for the aesthetics. Meh... Paradise still did it best (and maybe Ar Luminae).

GOODWAD

Now it gets interesting. GOODWAD is a collection of mini challenges, featuring some arcady mini-games, slaughter arenas, platforming challenges, and other surprises. You never know what you're going to get, and it's fun to go through all the maps. Even if you encounter some absolute bs here and there, you can't help but smile and just skip to the next map.

Entering high-quality territory now. This is vanilla Doom, btw (limit removing). No advanced engine like Boom or GZDoom. Just Doom. There are also NPCs and a few "quests" here and there, but nothing too complex. Good stuff overall, except for one map which felt a bit unfinished.
I recommend to play this in true color mode because the software palette doesn't handle dark reds and browns very well and turns them all into grey.

Tarnsman's Projectile Hell

0101c3l.jpg

Valiant on steroids. A big megawad with 36 maps, all made by Tarnsman (who also made some contributions to BTSX and AA, among other things). As the name suggests, you can expect lots of Arachnos and other snipers in high spots that can often be taken down with conveniently placed explosive barrels. Enemy behavior has been modified as well to make them more aggressive (more likely to shoot), most projectiles are faster, Pinkies are faster, and new enemies are added with even more projectiles. The maps are fun, varied, and fairly challenging. Do you like Doom and fun? Play TPH.

The txt file also provides a hilariously dumb story that still makes more sense than Insanity Edged.
It is the year 5000 SUPER A.D! Galactic War XII has finally come to an end.
After twelve bloody and devastating wars humanity as finally conquered its
most evil foe yet. Dust!

You are Doomgirl Kirisame, an SS Ranked Space Marine Uber-Witch, together with
your best friend Liam Neeson (trained Anti-Dust Priest), a team of irritable
biologists from the planet Tasicore VI, and the Hoover Aerospace S.S. Guingol
(the Universe's largest vacuum dreadnought), you helped pave the way for mankind's
glorious conquest over the dastardly adversary.

Having earned a little R&R, you head to Bermuda with Liam Neeson to kick back
and enjoy the local custom: high-stakes gambling in the Arena of Trigonometry.

Unfortunately before you can indulge in any of that much needed vacation, a local
lobster merchant approaches you, angered by the fact that your last name uses two
of the same vowel. He begins assaulting you with his collection of antique canvases.
You plead with the peddler of crustaceans to relent from his fabric onslaught, but
your attempts to dissuade him are to no avail. Left with no other option, you
tie him to a large skillet and fry him in the hot tropical sun.

Unbeknownst to you, this was no ordinary purveyor of sea creatures but
a descendant of former Bulgarian thespian Anton Gorchev. A mere actor in
life, but a 9th Level Mega-Deluxe Necromancer in death. Angered by the
death of his kin he vows to take revenge on you. Appearing in a spectral
form in your hotel room at night and aided by his army of random demons,
he kidnaps Liam Neeson and tells you he plans to hijack the Super Dreadnought
Guingol to unleash all the dust currently held in its tanks back into the
galaxy as punishment for slaying one from the house of Gorchev.

"Oh it's on!" you scream like a torrent of psychopathic babies. You rush to
your command center and assemble your crack team.

Denzel Washington the Science Guy (Created when Denzel Washington and Bill Nye
did the fusion dance in order to solve the Rotation Crisis of 4082), Chambo
(Chinese Rambo), Nuclear Man (with the power to explode), Fizbitch
(the soda assassin), Fifteen Time Ultra Heavy Weight Sumo Champion and
Largest Man in the World - Ragefist Smashdick (master of stealth and recon),
16 other non-important guys (and girls), and the Nintendo Omnibus.

Denzel reports that Gorchev has retreated to his hidden palace located
deep within the one realm all humans fear to tread. The Sun. Fortunately
you know one way to deal with that. While the extreme loudness of the sound
of nuclear fusion would normally prevent anyone but a undead Bulgarian
from entering the Sun, you happen to have an ace up your sleeve. Located in
the Super Future is the Universe's soundboard where the volume can be reduced
to safe levels. Before you can depart however a new threat has appeared.

Gorchev has deployed The Spider Mastermind to Lunar Asia (Asia was removed
from Earth and placed on the Moon in 4130 because everyone was tired of their crap).
Burdened by the supreme fatness of the beast the Moon has been sent on a
collision course with the Earth.

You gather your crack team and head to the fastest way to get to the
moon to slay the Mega Spider Bitch(TM). The space catapult in Norway...

P.S. your entire squad dies in seconds.

This spooked me a little, fucking FFIX flashbacks...

Early areas of Souldiers, a really good metroidvania with godlike pixel art. It boggles my mind why it's sitting on mixed ratings on Steam. I'm a veteran of the genre and I can't think of a single issue I had with this game so far...

Finished Legacy of Kain - Defiance (PS2). Somehow (had to force myself to finish the game).

Jebus fucking Christ, who developed, tested and released this game in such sorry state? It's totally unplayable, decline and a disgrace to Kain's / Raziel's name.

:decline:

Problems:

1) Camera is fucking abysmal

Worst thing is a sudden change of "perspective" during "area transition". You pressed "up" to cross the barrier in spectral realm, camera switches to show the character in its full 3d glory, "up" now means: "go back through the barrier". If you keep "up" pressed, character will keep "entering the door" over and over. Everyone involved in developing sth so retarded should be killed. Painfully.

But wait! There's more!

- Moving "in the direction of the camera", so you can't see shit (where do you go, enemies, etc.)

01_1_16siwk.jpg

02_1_1rbfg8.jpg

33_1_1t6eub.jpg

- "Cinematic camera" blocking your view in combat

03_1_169is5.jpg

04_1_1ypezd.jpg

- Jumping puzzles in a 3D environment with "moving" camera. Whoever designed this is a total retard. And testers should've an-heroed bofore accepting shit like this.

05_1_1qai8g.jpg

06_1_1lccvp.jpg

- Same as before, only... :drumroll: TIMED!

07_1_1m2d9p.jpg

:rage:

If not for quicksaves, I would've bailed. Too old for this (retarded) shit.

2) Combat is dogshit

- Same button for "attack" and "interact". Effect - Raziel casually leaving the room mid-combat:

11_1_120fi7.jpg

And going back:

12_1_19pcv7.jpg

With long-ass "look at our majestic animation!!1!" animation each time, OFC.

Or using Earth Reaver for fuck knows what during boss battle:

13_1_1lufwj.jpg

- Aerial enemies who can be hit only mid-air in a 3D game with fixed / moving camera. Effect: jump, attack - sorry, you're too far away from the enemy. Repeat 10 times to score one hit.

14_1_1anexm.jpg

Enemies getting stuck in the walls:

15_1_1bif44.jpg

"But look at all these great 3d ornaments, mang!!!". Fuck off.

- Fighting 4-6 enemies at once, with most of them being off-screen, so you can't see them + can only target one enemy + can't switch targets (AFAIK). At the same time, all enemies can easily target YOU.

16_1_17cf2g.jpg

34_1_1odern.jpg

35_1_1v7i7f.jpg

It's not even that hard (you have plenty of HP), just shit.

- You have to fight ~87 animated statues, which is fucking boring as fuck.

17_1_1ejf6b.jpg

18_1_1czdlt.jpg

- Shit that's very easy to miss. Here's ONE and only "well", in the entire game, which can be jumped into. Which took me 3 tries actually, since objects collision is fucked. So most fags would just assume, that's just an ornament, and they can't jump in there.

19_1_1r5dev.jpg

3) Overall retardation

- So much post-processing, that you can't see if enemies in the "spectral" world are still alive (solid) or devourable (transparent):

20_1_1jjdk0.jpg

- No ways of healing at some moments. Esp. before boss battles. In previous games getting souls wasn't ever a problem:

21_1_1gkfit.jpg

- Shitty collision detection. Esp. visible when fighting big demons - you can hit their legs 1 in every 3 hits at best.

22_1_17qipi.jpg

- Long fucking corridors that you have to just TRAVERSE:

23_1_1m4fz1.jpg

"Fuck year, just look at our 3D CORRIDORS, mang!!! Look how LONG they are!!1!".

- Retarded boss fight against Yanos. He blocks all your attacks, the only way of hitting him is right after his telekinetic attack, which pushes you away from him. So in like 90% cases, he will be back on his feet and blocing your attack when you reach him. Best way of dealing with him? Stay near the wall, so you can reach him ASAP.

FAQs suggest disabling the aim-lock, since avoiding his attacks is much easier without it. I can confirm this - I was unable to dodge his attacks even once (despite multiple tries) when locked onto him. But when I disabled the aim-lock, I suddenly started dodging. Whoever designed this should be aborted. Also his partner, his parents, his fucking dog. Down with their heads I say!

- Eight (?) reaver shrines, looking exactly the same. Everyone loves 3D labyrinths, yes? Well... no.

- Eight (?) reavers + 4 Kain's reavers, all of them totally useless. You need sword #4 to open shrine #5, where you get sword #5. Repeat 12 (?) times. But hey - more shit = better? Well... no.

Final verdict on the series:

Blood Omen 1 :5/5: - epic gothic 2d masterpiece (play the PC version with Verok's patch)
Soul Reaver 1 :5/5: - interesting and well made 3d metroidvania (play either the DC version (higher res, analog controls) or the PC version with Wrace's SR1 Patch (widescreen, subtitles))
Soul Reaver 2 :2/5: - shit, skip
Blood Omen 2 :3/5: - meh, but playable
Soul Reaver - Defiance :0/5: - total intellectual holocaust, avoid at all costs

So, "Xbox killed PC gaming?". No, it was dead long bofore Xbawks arrived.

:obviously:

And now for sth not so different:
