Game is a soulslike metroidvania that actually seems to understand the appeal of Dark Souls. Very open interconnected world, you can reach areas that will fucking kill you before you even reach the village with the level up lady.
Exploration is very good, after killing the second boss you unlock a walljump ability which lets you access previously inaccessible places (very metroid-like), and there's secrets hidden behind breakable walls in some places.

I've replayed the arcade version, and after educating myself I found out, that Sega developed a version for Genesis/Mega Drive as well. And it entirely new game, but with the same hero and his trusty dog companion. He really can help with the popamoling enemies, who are hidden behind covers. The pixel art and soundtrack is really great. The last penultimate level with ninjas swarming all over was stressful. Arcade version had some really hard platforming segments in the second part.
