Yeah, 640x400 = 2x( 320x200 ). 320x200 is genuine res for lot of old games, so doubling the value works like hardware 2x scaling ( because 320x200 doesn't scale to full screen on my panel in Dosbox ). I get it at upper part of screen, so I prefer VGA ( 640x480 ) with two small black stripes at top and bottom with picture in the center. I've been thinking about 640x400 a lot and maybe I'll switch, if I can figure out the picture scale to full, or center ( screen ). It should give a slightly more correct geometry, speaking internal game graphic architecture wise.
Depends on a game. If the game has 320x200 only, then I just use a slight bilinear filter.

Oh, that artwork. I love how people could put their ideas in detailed sprites rather than shitty models.

Could you please enumerate the mods/patches you've used to make the game look like this? It's been ages, and I so feel like giving the game another go right now.

The Widescreen Mod and Ghostdog's UI Mod (codex thread) are enough for the graphics, but I followed this guide:

http://thunderpeel2001.blogspot.nl/2009/01/planescape-torment-fully-modded.html

It lists a couple of other tweak and fixpacks that improve gamplay, restore some content, make the party banter more common, and do some other optional things. They don't change the game drastically. The guide also mentions some edits you can do to the .ini file to make animations very smooth.

I recommend following this page, and just enabling the stuff you want. Make sure to get the latest version of the packs they list though, I'm not sure if the links point to the newest versions.

Made the switch to 720p, this actually is better for Arcanum and feels more comfortable as you can't see an entire dungeon in one screen. Just wish the bottom UI was smaller.

Hmm, these classic RPG look better in original resolution. At first I was under impression of high res and would defend it, but then I saw the light. Monocled bros here told me, that it is the truth. I was fool, but now I know better.

They look best at a compromise resolution of around 1280x800.

But the menus and geometry. With high res everything becomes too small ( including maps ) and internal geometry is bad ( objects, architecture, scale ). Textures aren't as clear, as well. Just sayin'.

Yes, things are too small at 1200 res, that's why you use 800 as a compromise.

You still get gaps between menus and play space. There is million little things that go wrong. Mainly the whole scene setup is wrong ( camera ). And more.

Which specific game are we talking about? I've never had gaps or issues like that at 800.

Fallout, Arcanum, Planescape Torment. Generally any game made in low res scaled up. For every game there is a "sweet spot resolution" that makes it look the best and you can tell, when everything fits tight, the picture is smooth with lots of detail and life like quality ( proper scene light ) with rich colors ( considering crafting resolution of art assets, camera angle, scene setup, scale, etc ).

Well, I've played those games dozens of times in all kinds of resolutions. Like I said, the sweet spot for me is around 1280x800, but opinions of course differ. I never noticed any color or space issues at that resolution. Even at a crazy res like 1920x1200 the real issue is how zoomed out it gets, not glitches, in my experience.

You should at least make them widescreen.
