It's also much better than the original Metroid 2.

Well, it certainly keeps getting better in the second half when you get to explore larger areas and fight some interesting bosses (not just the same Metroids over and over again). Much better, in fact... Just finished it, but couldn't be bothered with 100% completion.

i started playing that the other day until I realized it's the sequel and the not the first title. really enjoyed the bit where

It's more of a spinoff. It didn't even had the Edna and Harvey title originally, it was just Harvey's New Eyes, but they later added the E&H part for commercial reasons.

However, the game acknowledges some parts of the previous one, but you won't notice any plotholes if you play it just like that.
