Nice mutilation system. Not a good game though.

I will, someday, play Final Fantasy VIII again. I remember my PS1 playthrough, back when I was 13 or so, got fucked because of disc issues. Last thing I remember was something about a cowboy guy using a sniper rifle at night or something like it.

Time to finally start the Starcraft II trilogy and see what happened after the Brood War. So far I like the additional objectives and upgrades, the soundtrack seems to be better in original though.

I've got whole SC2 installed and really want to do the SP campaigns but can't get into it. I bought and done WoL on release, then reinstalled the thing when they were giving HotS away last year or was it 2017, then bought LotV on a sale sometime for completion's sake. Done a few HotS missions and got bored. What pissed me off was there never seemed to be enough breathing space for me to be left with my toys and get the hang of it - it just railroaded me into progressing. In the first game the SP campaign besides establishing characters and races made you learn units and tactics but in the second all the developers seemed to care was to get over with the pretense as quickly as possible.

Far Cry 1. Meant to play this back around when it came out, but the CDs I borrowed from my friend were so scratched up that I couldn't install the game, and many years passed.

Out of the big 3 shooters of 2004 (Far Cry, Doom 3, Half-Life 2) this one is by far the worst. Doom 3 still plays very well and the claustrophobic interior locations hold up; Half-Life 2 while mostly mediocre as a shooter at least still looks good due in most part to its texture work and great visual direction; but I don't think anything in FC1 stood the test of time. The novelty of the tropical setting with its vista after vista wear off quickly and you realize the open areas are a poor replacement for proper level design, and big, bland open areas are one of the few things that modern games can actually do better. Enemies are boring to look at and boring to fight. The trigen weren't as aggravating as some people made them out to be, in fact they were mostly disappointing as they didn't force me to change my play-style in any significant way. They're also introduced so early in the game that they don't even function as any kind of plot twist or surprise (compared to something like the Flood from Halo). Combat encounters in general range from trivial to maddeningly frustrating, and some parts in particular felt like they had no play-testing at all (the part where you need to man the gun on a jeep while Val drives). Getting through the most difficult segments usually came down to exploiting the AI by placing myself in an area they couldn't easily navigate to, or shooting them from so far away that they couldn't properly return fire, so it never felt gratifying. Lame game.
