So I just got an email and apparently must now make a choice:

DRM Free Standalone or Steam Key? (We'll know if we'll be on GOG in May.)

DRM Free through GOG (if distributing there, fallback is through Whalenought)
DRM Free through Whalenought
Steam

So, Whalenought_Joe, which of these choices is easiest for you to handle? Or does it even matter that much? I can roll with any of 'em.

Hope that's working now — we've updated so you can re-download the whole package. Should be resolved after they get the Unity5 upgrade kinks out.

We'll be setting up the accounts on the forums for all the KS and Codex users anyway, putting what packages to download inside doesn't make much of a difference to us. We're not using any distributor bloated add-ons, so you're not particularly gaining anything going through them, though.

Is the Wolf form already avaiable?
If yes have any of you tried a melee shapeshifter and what stats did you use?
I have been toying with the idea until i tried the cat form, but now i might cast my bow aside.

It's 20USD to preorder so I imagine 20EUR or maybe slightly higher (does Steam charge VAT?). For this to be a breakout success I don't think Whalenought should go above $20, no matter how good the game is. That's the psychological "indie price point".

The trick is to avoid making it bundle fodder too quickly (ideally not until right before the sequel) as that reduces perceived value significantly. Larian has done well in terms of discount percentages and timing, though they have the advantage of massive sales.

Definitely, we plan to keep it $20 after release, probably include it with small sales where we could be listed. Those bundles are a bummer for the entire industry, small wonder how the Steam catalog is starting to reflect the mobile market.

Alienman : It'll be up on Steam for 20 USD, they auto-convert pricing, and I'm unsure how they deal with VAT. I don't think you'll pay more than that, but you can always purchase through us if it's easier/cheaper, and you get a neat handbook!

Shadowfang Wolf is available, it's a level 2 spell that utilizes OCC. I think last I tried it in some of the later areas it's crazy OP, especially with the Wolf Claws skill, but quite fun. We're going to be adding the Emerald Metalis district into the beta after a few more pass throughs, hopefully around the weekend. That would be solid place to test some Grade 2s.

Good call. Small sales only at the beginning. I don't get companies on steam who seem to yell: "Buy our game, it's great. Hey, here's -80%!" Consumers still honor good games, there's no need to throw them away for nothing.

Halt!
Drop the fist!
Drop it!
Now slowly, very slowly raise your arms over your head!

Great interview, thanks for the link.

2 things I wondered about:
Why do they call the setting Bronze Age inspired? From their explanation it doesn't sound like it but more like Iron Age... What's so Bronze Agey about it?
And why not let the player add map markers? I don't see a reason not to add that feature, Bronze or Iron age people probably also marked destinations and stuff on the animal skins or whatever they used as durable travel map.

"If"? FFS, GOG :retarded:

And here I was thinking digital outlets would make things a lot easier for independent developers.

Whalenought_Joe: Out of all the distribution options available (or considered, like GOG) to you which is the one that'd get you the most money?

A lot of the atmosphere, weapons, armor and culture in the game is based off earth's bronze age along with the eastern european aesthetic and dialects. *I thought the “iron age” originally was named somewhat begrudgingly, iron just happened to be cheaper and more abundant than bronze ore requirements and was therefor used more prominently. Prior to steel, bronze was still superior to iron in many ways, despite both having flaws (bending vs brittle, etc.).

* not a historian

So on Vol, while there is bronze and iron, bronze requirements are more abundant on the mainland continent that the Staglands is apart of, so it remains the primary use for finer and more expensive weapons. It was good in the long run, but I kind of missed our re-bending melee weapons design that didn’t make it in. Players were going to be able to carry around stacks of crappy swords like you would arrows and have a fun animation of bending the weapon with a foot if it gets a “bent” ailment after use, bump up the attack speed a few seconds. I think we mention something about that in the earlier part of the interview.

I forget what we talked about with map markers — but we didn’t want to auto-pupulate the minimap or overworld map with markers of interests (the overworld map does get chalk pathways and markers of locations as you find them, though). The inventory-item hand drawn maps for the player to crosscheck are what's utilized otherwise. We definitely considered player’s custom notes on the mini/overworld map, but it didn’t make it into the final set of features we had time for.

Out of all the distribution options available (or considered, like GOG) to you which is the one that'd get you the most money?

Distributers eat a nice sized chunk, but our website version just uses a nifty credit card or paypal option, whose cut is very small and goes directly through us.

Congrats on the Matt Chat interview. Excitedly watching now.

Thanks! It was a ton of fun being on, Matt's such an awesome guy. I wished I could of just asked him questions the whole time. I remember some more good stuff we get to in the later half of the interview, probably for part 2.

I was gonna wait for GOG, but fuck it, since you get more money that way and it's also DRM-free, I just purchased the game from your website. Keep up the good work. :bro:

Well, you haven't angered him so consider yourselves lucky. You wouldn't have liked him if he was angry.

If GOG isn't sure whether they want my money then fuck 'em and if Paypal is better for you two then it's a no-brainer: I'll be getting the game directly as well.

I'm bumping this thread because I'm getting sick of looking at a 10 year old Baldur's Gate 2 thread.
