This and the Sim City debacle are shaping up to be the most entertainingly awful things all year and it's only March.

(Fuck you chrome, debacle is indeed a word)

I'm just waiting for Garrott to pull the ultimate trick and reveal that they've signed Warren Spector onto the team. All his fanboys will then trip over themselves to throw money at the feet of Lord British.

That would be incredibly tempting. Serpent Isle (less sandboxy than U7, but had a way more interesting world). Savage Empires (very inventive puzzles and a neat crafting system). ... Well, okay, and Invisible War and Epic Mickey, I guess.

This video interview between Markee Dragon and Richard explains things a bit more with regards to solo vs. multiplayer and other aspects of the game.

Well I got through it. Most of my questions remain intact. Mostly it is about an MMO like UO where real estate can be a very good investment. It can be played in single player but if you play with a friend maps mutually update each other. If I killed a big foe which by all rights should stay dead in a single player game and my friend hasn't, will it be alive or dead in this new map?

Then again didn't he say earlier that single player characters won't be allowed in the multiplayer mode? But in this video he says there will only be one character per player so does that mean choosing single player or multi player is a non revocable decision?

And can quests designed for single player be used in an MMO? Or will they be tainted by MMO design and practically all require that 10 of this be killed and 12 of that be brought to an NPC? Will there be dense populations of identical monsters running in circles, waiting to be farmed?

I probably misunderstood a ton of things but the only way this could end up being a good surprise is if they really thought this through and yet... NPC escorts didn't cross their minds?

I actually would like to find reasons to believe in this. I could even consider a new take on a MMO, with good ideas for mechanics, interactivity and ways to avoid crowds of "heroes" walking all over each other. This could be that but practically none of these things are ever discussed. Now I think I've wasted too much time on this as it is.

Yeah, very weird that he keeps saying you can only have one single character. He wants you to play "YOU" in the game. I don't see that working out well.

I actually loved the Dragonlance novels when I was a kid, but they're still just D&D novels.

I've only tried to read one AD&D novel that was not Dragonlance and that was Pools of Darkness. Compared to the PoD novel the Dragonlance novels are masterpieces.

Hickman needs to get on baord with another Gold Box Dragonlance game.
Blargh...no. What do you people like so much about Dragonlance?

The games? Personally I prefer the Dragonlance due to more options than in the Forgotten Realms Gold Box games.
Also the books (not great literature, but still quite enjoyable) provide a good background for the games.

He never really wanted to "re-establish" himself as RPG developer, not even a microsecond.
All he wants to do, always, is to continue his ultimate collector mmo microtransaction facebook crap. He only spouted OMG HARDCORE OLD SKULL SINGLA PLAYA RPG to get more attention. And attention he got.

I admit I'm worried about the aftereffects of this high profile catastrophe in the making will have on the rest of the rpg crowdfunding arena.

I'm not too worried -- hopefully potential RPG Kickstarters will hear loud and clear that we want single-player games. Also, that the turn-based, party-based ones seem to be swimming in sweet, sweet Kickstarter cash.

I don't think SotA will hurt other RPGs. I think anyone with any common sense could see what this game was going to be by day 3 of the kickstarter. I think the first true bait and switch or fail to ship will be something that could hurt the momentum.

I once played in a WoW guild abbreviated SotA. We had 4 thunderfurys (3 rogues 1 tank). we were among the first in the world to kill ragnaros before sons spawned.

... What? This is a mmorpg thread anyway :smug:
