Too much RNG(where shit spawns on the map ) and broken balance(hello bleed) make for a pretty bad roguelike card game. You guys should check Roguebook.
The most interesting are 20 Ascension runs (using custom mode) and "Daily Climb"challenges. Playing every level up to 20 is indeed boring. While I really like StS, I don't think it has enough content to warrant repeated runs. I beat it with each class, finished some ascensions and I'm already bored with it.
You guys should check Roguebook. I think it's just better in every single way and it just doesn't get stale.
It was the game that introduced deck building and card battles to the steam audience. It also had a rock solid weekly update cadence which made everyone in early access feel like they were part of the development process. The enemies are so goddamn boring. There's like 5 archetypes, but even if there were a hundred their abilities are so goddamn boring. I feel like I'm playing a solitaire because I either draw the cards I need to deal with enemies or I don't. So it's all in the deckbuilding, and that makes most decks need a balanced approach, which again, yawn. I may combo draw and play the whole deck, but that's less likely and predictable than a godlike Binding of Isaac run.
Maybe I need to up the difficulty level, but I don't believe that'll unlock new AI or skills.

I like it, but I agree that encounter design is probably the weakest part of the game. While each enemy has a unique mechanic, the game never mixes and matches different enemies. You're always fighting the same static encounters. There's a mechanic where enemies can surround you (making you take more damaged from the enemy you have your back turned to), but bizarrely, there's only a single encounter in the entire game that utilizes this mechanic.I'm coming back to StS after a few years and I still don't get this game's hype. I've added the top mods, packmaster, downfall, spire biomes...and I'm still bouncing off it. I finish every run that goes past the first boss.

That's disheartening. I had some hope for Erannorth Chronicles but it never picked up.That being said, it's still by far the best game of its kind. It's spawned endless clones, but none of them have the same variety of different deck builds and interesting synergies. The mechanics I've seen in Slay the Spire clones come across as gimmicky and convoluted without adding real depth.I'm coming back to StS after a few years and I still don't get this game's hype. Don't play this one and try Tainted Grail Conquest.

You keep playing on higher difficulties/ascensions until you get to the 20th.How difficult is the game? On the first try (to be fair I played a board version for one afternoon, but I got a different character there) I managed to win and I suck at roguelikes. Got good artifacts: 1 extra energy but a 6 card play limit per turn and bonus to blocking (was playing a block build), but only about twice I had hp below 50% and one time it was caused by bad draw (second time was bad decision).
I had the same experience. I slept through a playthrough beginning to end and was like "meh". My friends later told me you have to finish the game like 11 times before the "real" game begins ... but I was already too bored to play it again. How difficult is the game? The first few ascension levels don’t make that much of a difference for difficulty. Once you get to around A10 things start ramping up quite a bit.I started again on ascension 1. Took a hit to hp to get a rare card. Tried to make an offensive deck, had seen many offensive abilities on 1st playthrough so I wanted to combo them. Died on 5th fight .

Also worth noting that the game somewhat counter-intuitively becomes harder as you unlock new cards and items because it becomes harder to make a completely cohesive and optimal build.
It will become harder and harder in higher ascension levels if you decide before the run start what deck you want to make. The best strategy is to build around the lucky opportunities you get towards the beginning of the run. For instance you find a good rare card or relic, then you build around it.I am actually having troubles on a2, tried to replicate my first deck, but those slam cards that does damage from block does not come. Would prefer if there was 4 cards to choose from rather than 3. I noticed that if you pick up a card, the chances of getting another copy of that card goes up.
