Sup faggots!
My impressions about this game. I know I'm late and that everything that could be said about this has already been said, but I haven't read a single word of it. I was holding on until I had a pc capable of handling this bitch, so I came in more or less blind. I'm just going to toss my thoughts on paper as I play ; I'll keep on the hypercritical asshole mask because I know that this is what you gents find acceptable
Alright, so I am of course a huge DX fan, my love for this game is just that, love, it's entirely irrational. I know the game has many flaws, but I don't give a shit. But since Invisible War was probably the biggestgaming disappointment I've ever had, I didn't feel so protective of the name anymore. I'm going to eat not caring what the brand is, I'm not even going to care if it's a wheat-based product, I'm just nonchalant that way. I know, dangerous living man.
So start the game right? Music sucks. I'm going to start about the music, no one does that. I've probably said this somewhere else, but I find the experience of music in a game to be quite important. But you don't really judge video game audio on its own merits, you judge it if it adds something to the experience. Anyway enough of this meta shit. The music in this is way too gloomy and forgettable. In DX you'll notice how upbeat and electro the music was ; now what have we got? Goddamn wailing arabian women. Fuck I'm tired of this shit. It's everywhere, I'm not sure where that trend started, but it's bad.
The bad gloomy music fits with the tone of the game. In DX the world was going to shit, but hey... you were augmented. Shit was cool. In HR - "I never asked for this". This pretty much resumes the tone of the entire game. Adam doesn't want to be here. Being augmented feels awkward at best, at worst it feels like being invalid and handicapped. Did you notice that in every shitty cinematic Adam is getting smacked around? Every of them, it’s hilarious. Well this is exactly how the plot felt too.
First the technobabble – oh the technobabble. I want to get behind the transhumanism theme, I really do, but jesus christ. All the text I read in this game was shit. Utter lifeless nonsense. And then – I'm going to nerd rage a bit (a lot) here – the setting was totally botched. First how science fiction the game was even if it was a prequel – ridiculous. They took the IW path on this one : at this point, it’s an alternate universe, it doesn't feel like it's our world anymore. Total rubbish : space choppers, metal cities, super Ais, what the hell is going on? The way the world is presented is just… it feels like everything's made out of plastic. With a piss yellow filter.
The plot was really awful. DX’s plot is very simple, very effective. I'm not sure if I could pin point what they did right with it, I'm not going to try because my nostalgia resists attempts at deconstruction, but I always cared about everything that was going on in this game. I'd read every single line of text voraciously, wave my fist in front of my screen yelling at Bob Page, shedding man tears when Paul died and being ecstatic when I found out I could save him. Of course, a lot of gimmicks DX did were fresh at the time – the way the game reacted not only to the choices you make, but also how you play, was pretty innovative. But these gimmicks don't work so much anymore. 12 years ago, okay, but you don’t get a free pass for this shit, it's not the same thing.
I enjoyed the gameplay of HR well enough. I think there's no reason why classic DX gameplay can't be transposed to the mainstream, there's nothing inaccessible about it. They did okay with this. But that’s the problem – it’s "okay", nothing new, and worst, it does some things wrong. The cinematics in middle of combat, things like takedown – what is this shit, final fantasy dragon summoning? Cover based gameplay : arrrgggh. Hacking minigame : . BOSS BATTLES (shave your balls) : . The level design is "okay" too, but it's cell-based so this ruins things a lot. Also : running around in hubs. Too much goddamn running around, and they even recycle the 2 hubs they made, it's pretty bad. The thing is, DX was working off the foundation of classic fps, and improved it - there lies its inspirational élan and its originality. HR just tries to copy what was already done. Anything new that it does isn't really noteworthy or is just plain bad.
I don’t know man. I’m a storyfag so let me speak about the plot again. There was something so off and clumsy about this storytelling. I didn't care about fuck-all. I guess Pritchard was a p. cool guy and Adam wasn't a bad protagonist, but that’s about it. Oh alright, I did think the theme that they hammered on all game long was fairly stimulating – you do get to be the moral agent at the end of the game and make a choice (pressing a button, because we all know the fate of the world is decided by pressing a button) – but it's not enough. I mean, fuck… Barrett? With a gunarm? Like in final fantasy right? And a romance story in my DX game? What the christ? Get the fuck out of here, women. Speaking of woman - that fucking last boss? Who was this asian chick? I don't even remember who she was. How the fuck could they mess it up that much? It's not that goddamn hard, you make a conspiracy theory about a shadow organization wanting to control people through technology. What the fuck happened here?
From the beginning the plot feels off. Start the game - it's Mass Effect 2 all over again . Except that ME2 actually had a better plot than this. Who the hell are these plastic people and why should I give a shit? The side stories weren't even good. All the areas felt fucking bland. At first I marveled on how good the graphics looked – I suppose they do, really – but I don't remember a single area after playing the game. Maybe I’m just a jaded little fuck, but it pisses me off how bad this was.
Although to be fair, the gameplay was solid enough to carry me to the endgame. I suppose that's a good thing – that a game has good gameplay and all that – although I would hesitate to call it good. I'm just really a sucker for these kind of "smart fps" games.
That's about it really. Been 8 years I’ve played IW, couldn’t say if this is any better than that game, I guess it is, if only because you don't play as a brain-dead punk with a shitty trendy haircut that gets the opportunity to kill goddamn JC Denton. But let's not get there, the past is the past, just like all those horrible characters, the guy with the gunarm and so on, they're all dead and buried and i dont want to hear about it anymore
