I've played all the way to Space stage. So much potential and in-no-veishons. Too bad way too much dumbing down makes all the clever designs go to waste.

The worst is in the tribal stage. Using tools? Fishing? Forming alliances? Sounds fun! Yet it also turn out to be completely pointless - the tools hardly felt doing anything, food gathering is a joke since you can get almost unlimited food from your pets, and the communication minigame is one of the biggest facepalm I've seen in gaming. "Wut? tahts all?" is my best describe of this stage.

The guys seriously need to learn from Space Rangers at how to creating multi-genred games.

I will probably get this if they release it for the Wii. I only have time for casual shit anyway. Besides, I wasn't foaming at the mouth for this one. Hell, I don't even game much anymore.

Online retailer Amazon's user ratings for the long-awaited EA Maxis PC title plummeted to a single star, largely based on negative reviews of the DRM, which one user called "draconian."
Oh, and what about game being extremely short except Space age that is ok but eventially annoying? The only really fun part of the game is cell stage... but even that was worse then free flOw.
Right now 50% mark is quite fair for it. That
s how 'complete' it is, as compared from what we were promised.

I'm finding the game moderately fun in small doses, it's a disappointment compared to the early spore videos and the hype though.

By the way, is this clown for real? Always hard to tell on the internetz.

I think it is entirely possible that God created civilizations on other planets. But because Will Wright has brainwashed Frank Drake into thinking that life in the universe gave rise to “super humans” on other planets that are better than us.

God would never create something better than himself, it is not possible as God is perfect in every way. And once again, I reiterate that man was created in His image.

This man is an obvious troll, but a good one at that.

Yeah, cell stage, space stage were initialy primising, rest is pretty much shite. Such a squandered concept.

Still, I'm kind of used to ball aching levels of disappointment from mainstream games.

As a game Spore fails horribly. But as a piece of culture and gaming history, Spore is pretty fantastic. The powers of 10 concept is pretty isolated and relatively unappreciated by the majority of even educated people. After a generation grows up with Spore--and the games it infulences--the concept will be a lot better understood along with the anthropocentrism that comes with it.

Take the view of a 9 year old. Spore would be tremendously appealing, encouraging, and educative, even if it fails by vetern gamer standards. I played Civilization and Colonization as a youth and as such history was always very alive and comprehendable to me in the classroom. I think that the basic concepts of evolution will be effortless to teach to a Spore-influenced generation. RNA replication is another matter, but with kids interested even that is more teachable.

Agreed. Playing the Civilization games as I was younger, as well as Caesar and some others made it much easier on me to understand the history timeline as well as concepts. Kids should be playing that kind of stuff, not some Spongebob or Dora nonsense games.

Good points Lord Chambers and Sport. This game I don't think was probably meant for mad scientists like us, but it's potential as an alternative Dance Dance Revolution or Guitar Hero can only mean good things for younger people.

Hell, if it wasn't for me playing Simcity back in the day my understanding of how taxes work would probably be nil

The game is good for kids until the space stage. The frequency of invasion is driving me insane. Even hardcore gamers would want to smash their keyboards though I can imagine kids are better at smashing stuff.

Fortunately after I got the uber turrets my colonies are practically invincible. I finally can focus my mind on terraforming and exploring. Granted it can't be compared to Space Rangers and Freelancer but the space stage is still OK.

And they'd better fucking release a patch soon - tons of people (including me) are having trouble that after defending their homeworld you will crash when try to leave it. So I must leave the homeworld defences on auto-resolve. Fortunately the homeworld seems very tough so far. But if the Grox invades me I'm pretty much screwed.

Forbes magazine on Spore piracy
http://www.forbes.com/technology/20...-cx_ag_mji_0912spore.html?feed=rss_popstories

As of Thursday afternoon, "Spore" had been illegally downloaded on file-sharing networks using BitTorrent peer-to-peer transfer 171,402 times since Sept. 1, according to Big Champagne, a peer-to-peer research firm. That's hardly a record: a popular game often hits those kinds of six-figure piracy numbers, says Big Champagne Chief Executive Eric Garland.

But not usually so quickly. In just the 24-hour period between Wednesday and Thursday, illegal downloaders snagged more than 35,000 copies, and, as of Thursday evening, that rate of downloads was still accelerating. "The numbers are extraordinary," Garland says. "This is a very high level of torrent activity even for an immensely popular game title."

Brilliant move EA.

BWAHAHAHHH! I love it!

Everyone should read the article LCjr. linked to, especially the comments.
When I saw that people were still buying Bioshock/ME with this bullshit included,
my thought was that the doomsayers were finally right and PC gaming was going to
die. This turn of events has restored some of my faith in my fellow PC gamers.

I don't believe that this is going to sink EA, they are simply too big.
What I do hope for is that this situation sends a strong enough message that publishers
will seriously reconsider before pulling any similar DRM stunts in the future.

Anyone who has ever gotten into an argument with a "fanboy" knows how zealous
some customers can be in their loyalty to their favorite company. If publishers would just realize that the good will generated by treating your customers as valuable assets instead of potential criminals would do far more for sales than any DRM; everybody , customers and companies both, would benefit.

I found this in the articles comments:
