Because you aren't going to be exploring huge planets, you'll be exploring the 10x10km cube the game generates around your landing zone.
I've explained this so many times I'm losing my mind, but yes this essentially combined with whatever essential quest locations or save data is loaded on top of it. The planets aren't going to be near real scale because then the game would be literal petabytes of total boredom. You'll probably be able to walk "around" as if they were spherical--probably more of a distorted cube but you won't notice that on-surface--because wrapping world cells is not the massive technical hurdle everyone seems to think it is. Just look up circular arrays, it's not that complicated.
But why make moving on foot the focus when they are bothering to render such huge planets? It doesn’t make sense thematically; sounds to me like an artificial way to keep players walled within a radius around the landing areas.
Codex is going to hate me for this: If the distances involved are so vast that you're adding in new modes of locomotion purely to get somewhere faster, you should just let the player "teleport" there with fast travel. Making vehicles is not difficult. Making good vehicles that players use for anything beyond defacto fast travel is much harder. But anyway the reason Bethesda doesn't do vehicles is because they make their world cells really "heavy" so they can only stream in so fast.
The last part is essentially what I mentioned earlier about not wanting their game to become a popping fest with shit rendering in front of your face.

I agree about there not being a gameplay-related justification for vehicles, yet they sound like they would give me at least 15 minutes of fun per planet and for me that would make them worth having.

I wasn’t however aware about them making the bubbles a explicit thing. I admit I didn’t follow the development closely, but with all the fanfare about huge spherical worlds and shit I had imagined that spending hours roaming aimlessly would be a thing and vehicles would have made that fun.

Again, I won’t defend that as the most sophisticated gameplay concept, but Bethesda clearly won’t offer a deep experience, as even their combat sequences are closer to GTA/Halo than to something like Deus Ex, so that kind of fun was part of what I was looking forward to :( I hope the space parts are decent enough…

I mean the empty distances probably will exist because rendering raw terrain is easy. I'm just saying the game is probably intended for you to fast travel between locations to get stuff done at a reasonable pace. This is the same studio that made Daggerfall after all.

But reddit told me Lorraine Williams is only hated because of misogyny and she was actually a great leader that saved tabletop RPGs!
In fairness, for a long time a legion of Gygax fanboys vilified Lorraine Williams, along with various others. We should be aware of both the merits and failings of Lorraine Williams, Gary Gygax, and the many others who contributed to TSR from 1974 to its demise in 1997.

Everything I hear about her makes her sound kinda retarded.

After talking with you guys about the topic of Lorraine Williams I looked it up again. From what I understand she basically did not like RPGs and saw TSR just as an investment and tried to find ways to get more money out of the company by having the company expand its line of publications and products. The new lines may not have been bad on their own but the buying audience to make the lines profitable was just not there. Fans from one line or setting like for example Dark Sun (I don't know if that was published around the time, I needed an example) would not automatically become a fan of the Forgotten Realms line. So you had these loads of different publications but the costs to make them was higher than the returns as now the audience was divided by the different IPs.

You see that mech? You can't pilot it.
snip
Let me guess. Originally the player was suppose to be able to pilot mechs but Bethesda's people could not get it to work or there was no time to get that part of the game finished. But of course fans will fix it.
Hilarious considering they just had to repurpose the power armor system from F4.
And I am pretty sure that it will happen in some kind of paid expansion or DLC. "Mechs return or something'. I think Bethesda is pulling a Capcom here by removing content that is already in the game and make customers pay extra for it.
I wish for once that the damn Bethesda fan boys would hold this against the company for a change "Know what? I am not going to buy this DLC, or even the major game expansion ones. Bethesda needs to cut it out with the horse armor bullshit.". But I know that that will not happen.
It is incredible, having an audience that demands better quality in design and gameplay and a bug free experience, and yet when Bethesda teases them by basically jingling prettier keys in front of them they are like "Shut up and take my money!". I hate Todd and Bethesda for what they did to the Fallout IP but damn did the F'er and his pals not managed to find the money making formula.

^ This user is a 1080ptard, do not listen to him. Upscalers are free performance at 1440p and beyond, and boomer grognards who haven't played a new release since 2007 hate this one simple fact!
"Yes I use an upscaler that makes my graphics blurry just so I can play with a bigger resolution, why?"

Looks terrible. Seems to be the exact same gunplay from Fallout 3 the best part of 20 years ago..
Like, why is that? Why havent they changed that? Does Todd not want to sack someone? Even pay them off?
They wasted a decade.

He's right though, I do play at 1080p 240hz, because I'm not a fucking retard. You are better off sticking with 1080p or 1440p and high refresh rates for now unless you just never want to use ray tracing. In which case I guess 4k without upscaling makes sense if you own a 4090.

When I want ray tracing, I can do it at acceptable frame rates. When I'm not using it my refresh rate is so high that I'll never max my monitor out with my 3080 and 5800X. I'll go 4k in a generation or two when the top tier cards are powerful enough for it to make sense for how I game.

Its a pretty bland menu, I dont get why people are so triggered by his take and have a urge to attack the guy and defend the design.

Not sure if you know who he is or not. He has a long history from the gamergate days. Mostly concerning WoW's decline (he was a team lead on old WoW), he is outspoken on how much he likes having sexy females in games, and some hot takes on gamergate, which pissed a lot of people off. He has a lot of people who hate follow him or whatever the terminology for that is. People just wait for him to tweet, then talk shit. I have no idea what he has said in the last two years or so though.

Design is bland and minimalistic, but it doesn't neccessarily prove team is overworked or not caring.
Bugs and lack of detail will, though.

Bethesda’s Pete Hines Calls Out Former Blizzard WoW Team Lead Over ‘Rushed’ Starfield Start Screen Comments

Pete Hines (senior vp of global marketing and communications, president of Bethesda male feminist club)
"Or they designed what they wanted and that’s been our menu for years and was one of the first things we settled on", Hines wrote on Twitter. He continued, "Having an opinion is one thing. Questioning out a developer’s “care” because you would have done it differently is highly unprofessional coming from another “dev”."

If this was any other studio then maybe, maybe that argument would make sense.

But since this is "King of Bland Gaming" Bethesda, the argument seems very meh.
