Skyrim won more than 200 GotY awards. Fallout 4 was their most ambitious game ever, and the next generation of open-world gaming. Starfield is... new!
I think it reveals that all the talk about wanting risky games that attempt innovation is just that, talk. If gamers are unwilling to cope with the consequences of risks they should quit whining about risk-averse companies releasing iterative products.

Interesting that you know all this...
Are you taking the high road with me? On the codex?
Do you like this more than Fallout 4?
More of a sci-fi than post-apoc guy, so yeah.

I played it the last time on release with very basic mods installed. I'd have to give it another spin with proper mods installed like Starvival. But I think I can like it better than FO4 once it gets all the DLCs and updates and some solid mods.

Thanks I will try this eventually. I might need a better graphics card first.

Starfield didn't attempt to innovate though. It's Daggerfall with half the systems missing and one enemy type.

I assume that most of the missing mechanics were going to be tied to Galbank, they have buildings everywhere and do fuck-all

Alleged leaker says dice-roll combat is returning from Morrowind but via weapon modes like setting phasers to stun and all NPCs after Shattered Space will be killable again in addition to romancing any NPC

Yes, give me a fucking stun gun. Should have been in the base game. None of this EM weapon horseshit.

I'm so annoyed that these stupid assholes at Bethesda still haven't capitalised on the potential of non-lethal playthroughs, despite being an option ever since TES: Arena. Starfield is begging for some systems to support it; you even have the Diplomacy skill and the ability to take bounty missions and build a brig on your ship, and yet they still don't have any basic systems underpinning any of it. You should be able to stun and capture any NPC in the entire game and turn them over to guards.

I think I've seen mods like that for Skryim.

Except instead of turning them over to guards you turn them over to slavers.

it is pretty funny, i created my character as a nonlethal diplomat who uses persuasion and by level 65 I was blasting everything that moved with Varuun particle beams

should get additional credits for completing missions nonlethally or something

I saw an interesting one that let you capture bandit leaders specifically and escort them to guards. It feels like there's a whole untapped mode of gameplay there; having to escort a prisoner back to a town while their entire gang pursue you and try to ambush you and free their leader. Like 3:10 to Yuma but with everyone glitching through the floor.

I tried it too when I saw Diplomacy was a skill and it turned into absolute farce five minutes in, me screaming at people to stand down while Sarah schizophrenically switches between putting her gun away and yellling "you picked the wrong day to piss me off!!!" while unloading a whole clip into a wall.

The thought occurs that the speech minigame, which rocks, could be combined somehow with the Diplomacy skill. Diplomacy to temporarily pacify people, and then a speech check to make them either permanently non hostile (easy check), agree to surrender and be taken prisoner aboard your ship (hard check), or to actually join your crew (NIGHTMARE DIFFICULTY CHECK). Morrowind almost had something like that if you combined Calm spells and then Speechcraft to get people to 100 Disposition.

Bethesda innovations are always the same: remove 2 systems to introduce a new one. In this game they introduced back the procedural tech of TESII, but they made it lame and boring with nothing to do there aside from the same reused exploration and dungeon cells. They introduced spaceship combat but removed mounted combat. They added custom housing but made it suck at launch with customization of interior spaces and it being lost when you changed modules. They did settlements that serve no purpose, unlike FO4.

Todd doesn't add anything wtihout removing 2 things: less work for the future.

Weirdly, the most developed features of the game - ship building and outpost building - are completely optional, I didn't touch them and managed well enough (playing on Hard).
Spaceship customization is arguably the best least bad part of Starfield; can be genuinely engaging. :M
did they fix enemy ships only targeting the center of mass of player ships?

I remember some videos of people making L shaped ships because enemies could not hit them at all

You can customize your ship but it'll always look like outdated NASA prototype junk
