I've got to agree with the purists. The non-RPGs reviewed shouldn't make it to the front page but become a sticky in the appropriate sub-forum instead. If the site wants to be called RPG Codex, then at least it should be consistent with it. The community can read the review in the appropriate sub-forum, if they care enough to wander there.

Yep, that's the issue I try to address. We hate everything that is not an RPG, except it's been done for so long, out of context that all that's left is impotent disdain to everything. As a result we get "it's not an RPG, because... well... it's not an RPG!!".

That the others have no clue that Codex covered many other RPG(-like) games in the past - be it in reviews or interviews - and now jump around butthurt about some imaginary sacrilege is particularly hilarious.

I don't think the majority hates non-RPGs, as it is evident from the sub-forums. Nevertheless, every time a non-RPG is reviewed, there will be people complaining underneath, this is the internet after all. Just because non-RPG reviews have been on the front-page of RPG Codex so many times, it doesn't mean it is right*. Shouldn't there come a time when this stops?

As an example, there are some substantial differences between Deus Ex and MotN that bring the former closer to RPGs. PnP RPGs have a lot of factors. Character creation/stats/skills/classes, character progression, turn-based combat, c&c ,dialogue, etc. None of them alone is enough to put you in the RPG spectrum. The closer you are to the paradigm that is pnp, the better.

And aside, I think you know MotN is not RPG enough. It's not even close. The less RPG it is, the more bitching there will be. Just because video games cannot follow the paradigm 100%, it doesn't mean we can classify anything as an RPG. Just because many Codexers love their stealth games because they may offer different solutions to missions(I know I do), it doesn't mean we should cater to them, fuck them(me included). Just because there have been non-RPG reviews on the front-page in the past, it doesn't make it right* to continue doing so.

*as in, consistent with the name and purpose of the site

Basically. I'm okay with Dishonored because of its lineage. However if it didn't have the pedigree of Harvey Smith etc. and the obvious links to Arkane, Thief and Deus Ex, I wouldn't think to cover it.

Mark of the Ninja does not have a lineage - it's just some random game. It shouldn't have been on the Codex front page. Certainly not stickied, at least. The only reason it got there is because members of the staff are convinced that you're a quality poster who is gud at riting.

I don't really understand why you didn't just post these reviews in GG to be honest. Whether they're good games or not, Mark of the Ninja is not an RPG, and neither is Dishonoured ('pedigree' is irrelevant, especially since Harvey has been making utter shit for years now). There just isn't any reason for them to be on the RPG Codex news page. If you're worried the reviews won't attract enough attention if not plastered on the front page and stickied, wouldn't it be better to determine why exactly your review isn't grabbing people's interest and fix that, instead of forcing it somewhere it doesn't belong?

I find it especially funny that JarlFrank, who as a moderator/admin has almost certainly moved threads from GRPG to GG, is now posting GG crap in the one place it belongs even less than GRPG.

I just realised I've been having fun in Saints Row 3 co-op, and it ALSO has ability-based character progression unlocked when you gain XP ("Respect"). Can I write a Codex review of Saints Row 3 co-op? It's a really fun game and I think all the Codex should be made aware of it. In fact, it also has C&C which makes it even more of an RPG than MotN, I mean what is an RPG anyway right?

I am 100% super duper serious here guys.
