They're unable to open doors

Why would zombies know how to open doors locked by keypads/keycards?

They're mutants, they're not necessarily unintelligent. There could be some factoid buried away in an audio log somewhere that suggests otherwise but I didn't get the impression the mutants were invariably meant to be brainless zombie-esque creatures.

But yeah, fair point. If the cyborgs can't open doors either then that's really inexcusable, since they presumably have some kind of intelligence (maybe they're even being controlled by SHODAN directly).

But either way, from a gameplay perspective, it's a bit of a laugh if you can thwart your pursuers by closing a door.

Damn this development cycle was a shitshow. I am still looking forward to it, with a certain degree of scepticism, of course.

I liked most of the demo and apart from how the development went, if it turns out good a remake of SS 1 is welcome.

On the downside, the game now has even MORE first person animations (every time you pick up a keycard, every time you open a door with a keycard, every time you pick up an audiolog). The intro was okay-ish. I suppose your enjoyment of the intro depends entirely on your tolerance for meta easter eggs like this one:

We will also be hosting a stream on Steam today Feb 7th at 9AM PST, so please log into Steam, navigate to the store page (https://store.steampowered.com/app/482400/System_Shock/) and hang out with us!

However…if you want to wait a little while longer the Backer Beta will be coming near the end of the month. You will be able to play the game from start to finish and all that we ask is that you don’t share any screenshots, videos, or streams of the Beta so as to avoid spoiling the game.

Also, we’ve wrapped up the manual and it’s out to print for the Big Box versions and it weighs in at a whopping 80+ pages!

That's surprising that the backer beta will include the full game. People will just pirate it and finish the whole thing before the game is even officially released.

It's not bad, actually.

I still think that making the "horror" aspect the primary focus, while I always found SS1 more of an Action game is the wrong approach but I am having fun.

The new demo is more action oriented than the old ones IMO. Way more enemy respawns and ammo, along with new stuff like weapon upgrades.

I played the old version and the new version back to back, and I'm glad to say there are some improvements, if relatively minor. I haven't finished the demo.

Pros:
  • The previously glaring lights have been fixed and no longer are as obtrusive. Lighting overall seems to be better. I'm surprised this isn't mentioned in the notes, as this was a common complaint.
  • You get the world's weakest flashlight early in the game.
  • Enemy AI does seem to be better and the new animations are appreciated. The non-robot enemies are less robotic now.
  • There also seem to be improvements to enemy sound design.
  • Because of the above two points, combat is more fun (but still not great).
  • The demo map has been changed, and I think for the better.

Neutral:
  • More first person interaction animations. Can be a chore when deep into the game, or problematic when you're in combat, but items so far seem intelligently placed.
  • There's more "impact" to melee attacks, but now it's coupled with an awful swing effect to the camera.
  • Enemy density seems to have gone up.

Cons:
  • The save menu is barely readable when loading. Clearly something that needs to be fixed.
  • Even with the improvements enemy AI is very subpar. Haven't run into any "smart" enemies yet, but the early robots and mutants can all be cheesed.
  • The entire intro sequence was not needed. Honestly found the original text crawl more badass. The cinematic was kind of lame, the CEO's model glitched out towards the end, there was a horrible instance of hollywood hacking that if I was a real programmer I would be offended.
  • No tits. I demand Shodan with tits.

All in all, seems like a marked improvement from the last demo. At this rate, I'm looking forward to the full game in 5 years or so. Wait, what do you mean it's finished?

God damn it, how I hate pixels in modern "retro" games. Ooooh, look at meee, I've got pixels, I'm sooo cooool.
Truth is any game that looks better than Quake 1 looks wrong with unfiltered textures.

Give me bilinear texture filtering like in 1997.

Well, it's true it does nothing for me. I can live with it though.

This faux-retro fad where everything has to be unfiltered has gone on for way too long. Funny enough the original System Shock had texture filtering for sprites when they were close enough to the player.
