It's becoming a remaster.

The reason for that is that people started crying on Discord/reddit when ND took things into their own hands. I think they also bogged themselves down creatively, and ended up hitting the reset button in a bid to save the project.

Meat and bone.

Perfection of the digital.

It feels really good. But I'm still not fond of the visual looking too much like actual real-world installations. Maybe it's because of reflections. They can borrow more from the look of Rez games to be honest. (Yeah they are rail shooter and on the other hand this should have structures perceivable by players, but still.)

Also they've got a writer in July: https://www.linkedin.com/in/nickmazwriter/

Contract Writer for System Shock remake

Company Name Nightdive Studios (Contract)
Dates Employed Jul 2020 – Present
Employment Duration 3 mos

He doesn't have a long list of video game works (interestingly he previously worked on Steam Bandits, the indie game by Jason Fader), mostly did content/copy writing. Probably not a lot of things to write for this game anyway since it became a faithful remake.

Cyberspace looks pretty good. It took them so long to reveal it that I was beginning to get afraid they were going to cut it out of the game.

Isn't this the first bit outside of medical (physical) they've shown in action?

Only something like 8 more decks to go then!

I think they have a lot more than they've actually shown off, but I could be wrong.

In 2020 a remake of a game released in the mid-90s is given a retro-80s exaggerated neon visual style. So fucking dumb. Anything released before 2005 = slap a bunch of neon pink and purple on it.
The collective imagined future is stuck in the '80s.

It looks better than the original indeed, although way too many flashy colors IMO.
Epileptic people will be screwed.

Choose one:

1. Game devs are so creatively bankrupt or bossed around by souless publishers, that they cannot make anything new except refinement of an existing thing, or a copy of a copy. Hence why we have remakes, remasters and such of even less than 10 years old walking simulators.

2. We're already living in a dystopic, dry society with high-technology that won't end well no matter what, which means escapism has to go further back for depictions of futuristic societies.

Yeah, I think the game in general is a little too bright. Hopefully they tone it down somewhat, and I think there's a good chance they will.

It seems like that vinyl sound track remaster is out:

It sounds like it was recorded on an SC-88 Pro, with added reverb. I'm pretty sure the music was originally composed on SC-55 or one of its variants and it sounds better on that module.

I guess it is mostly for nostalgic reaons, but I still prefer the Soundblaster/Adlib version of the intro from the floppy release - also better than the CD version in my opinion:

Well, you might like to know then that sides 3 and 4 have all the tracks in AdLib, though I'm not sure if that's very useful seeing as its emulation is very close to the real thing. This site has samples of all the tracks:

The whole soundtrack is on youtube in its entirety. Link

Unfortunately, they messed up the Soundblaster tracks. If you play the Classic version of System Shock, you can change your sound card settings.
sshock.jpg

I presume they recorded the soundtrack off the SoundBlaster 16 or SoundBlaster Pro setting, which is unfortunate, as they are riddled with glitches. I'm not an expert in audio hardware or anything, but it sounds like at certain points the emulator gets overencumbered, causing this really sharp "boing" sound.

Here's an example from the Medical track. At 0:58 you can hear three boings in rapid succession. Or take the iconic Cyberspace track (first boing at 0:33). Granted, this is System Shock and the soundtrack is full of odd bleeps and bloops. But this just sounds wrong. I've never played Shock 1 on the original hardware, but you can't tell me that this is how it's supposed to sound like, especially since the regular Soundblaster setting doesn't suffer from these glitches.

It's so bad that I never played the game with the SoundBlaster Pro setting and played with just regular SoundBlaster, which sounds slightly more "archaic", but at least it renders the music properly. But putting these glitched up the wazoo tracks on vinyl and selling that as a premium collector's item is a pretty poor show, TBH.

I think it interesting to listen also to the classic mac version of the music, that is a direct digitization.
This is the Reactor music (you can easily find the others).

Note: since I haven't played the Enhanced Edition, I don't know if is this the music version included in the release.
Note 2: It is interesting that the background noise seems taken straight from Thief 1.

The three music tracks included with the Mac version were bonus tracks for listening outside the game. If I recall correctly, either the manual or the readme file indicates so. They also have comments stating that they were remixed by Tribe, the band Shodan's voice actress belonged to. They are pretty nice, however.

Edit: The additional two tracks (‘Executive’ and ‘Security / Bridge’) that YouTube channel gives as belonging to the Mac version might be from the game itself, recorded using whatever synthesizer Macs used. The remixed bonus tracks had their titles listed in the manual (or readme) as ‘System Shock’, ‘Reactor’, and ‘The Ballad of Eduard Diego’ (that's the medical deck track).

Nifft Batuff, I edited my previous post to add a few things.

That intro theme comparison isn't complete as after all the MIDI version played on SC-55 or something comparable sounds much more elaborate. The intro remix from the Mac version is also now used for the intro cutscene in the Enhanced Edition, but I can't recall if it was also the case in the old CD-ROM version for DOS.

October Update

Welcome back SpoOooOoky Hackers,

Do you think this is too much gore? Just kidding, it is never enough!

Concepts to Environment
This week, we start with The Bridge concepts by Robb Waters. In creating this level, Robb was deeply inspired by the Neo-Gothic aesthetics with a touch of old school Doom.

In the original level, the environmental textures implied subtle facial elements, with the modernization we didn't want to lose this vibe but instead, we transformed it.

Throughout the Bridge, you will encounter this blend of organic and cybernetic nests of building blocks for SHODAN's networks created by the Nano-Bots.

In case you had ever wondered how the crew lived on Citadel in the before times, look no further than Robert Simon's beautiful 3d model paint-over concepts.

Have they shown the non-cyberspace cortex reavers yet? Come to think of it, have they updated or better optimised the demo from May?
