Just finished this one and so I'm hijacking this thread. My thoughts below, but I'll just say there is a reason why the game is not often discussed.
Pros
+ The story is a light and simple affair. Some evil guys enslaved you and your relatives, you escape with your sister, and after some years you return for revenge with the final battle occurring at the mines being worked upon by the remaining slaves. The goal is to fight your way to the top of the slave organization, free the slaves, and get your revenge. I enjoy these sorts of low-key and personal goals over the typical sort of chosen-one out to save the city/kingdom/world scenarios.
+ It's a tactical RPG, heavy on the tactics and light as an RPG. The game is a linear series of combat events that hops from one encounter after the other.
+ There is a good spread of character types from tanky spear and shield combtants, to killer robots, to flying demons. At level 20 a character can choose one of two prestige classes.
+ You start out with two characters and can attain a huge party. The end battles allow somewhere between 12-15 of your allies on a battlefield in any given time.
+ There is some replay value if you were not able to rescue potential NPCs and lure them into the party. Also, there are plenty of replacement characters for your forces in case you play with perma-death on.
+ There are some fun environmental tricks you can use, such as destroying portions of a bridge and then pulling and enemy towards you so he drops into the water and drowns.
Cons
- It took me multiple attempts to beat this game because of the bugs, mostly with the controls. The worst was when my main characters died because she had gear that raised her hit points. The game counted her as dead since she looked to be in negative hit points after the battle since it doesn't account equipment bonuses between fights. I just thought she wasn't an option to put into the field for a couple of battles because of story reasons. She still had dialogue during the between mission cut scenes. By the time I realized the problem it led to a point where I could no longer progress the game.
- The first half of the game is fun since the maps can be challenging and you start learning how to use a series of diverse skills, such as placing traps or pushing combatants into water, lava, or a wall. But during the second half of the game, the reveal of new tricks slows down and the fights become easy. To compensate, instead of improving the encounter design, the later battles have a steady stream of endless enemies until you find ways to block off cave openings. I've never been a fan of this gimmick as it seems like a lazy solution by the designer.
- I shouldn't care about the storyline in a game like this, because story isn't that much of a concern in a tactics game, but I didn't like the lead character or her story arc. She is abrasive and it wasn't realistic that she could put this large and diverse group of companions together. I did think her younger sister was better as she made more of an effort of try to make friends. The younger sister should have been the lead instead of a sidekick for a party-based game like this. Having the younger sister as the protagonist would have been the better choice as she would have had to deal with conflicts caused by her older sister while at the same time working to keep the band together.
Overall the game is fine, but I would not recommend since there are better tactical games out there. I preferred other indie darlings such as the Banner of the Maid and Symphony of War.
