How old are you guys to think Bard's Tale is 'niche?' compared to Wasteland? Sorry to tell you Bard's Tale was a much bigger deal than Wasteland back in 't3h day.'

Dude, did you notice not all those interviews explicitly saying they're using UE4
I didn't read them all, but good to know. It's just that the screenshot looks too good for Unity, but not good enough for UE4 and so I figured Unity cause it's closer to that kind of quality.

He talks of graphical revolution and shows this? Lol.

despite the usual hype by Fargo, sounds like a thing I want to throw money at

The Kickstarter will ask for $1.25m

Yeah... That's not gonna happen.

Precisely. Bard's tale is much more niche than Wasteland or Planescape. I think Fargo miscalculated what the amount of audience out there is for this kind of game. Good luck to them, but not all that hopeful.
I think he counts on people liking WL2 (and free update) + people liking what was shown so far for TToN.
I know I will be a part of it if there is a 15 or 20$ level.

I don't know if they'll make that much, but I'm fairly certain that inXile have built up enough rep - and also that they know how to put together an impressive enough campaign - to be able to make their base goal.

Dunno. I've played the BT series a bit, and I always thought it was an inferior blobber to other games. Aka trash/filler combat. Are we really saying there's that big of a pent up demand for this type of game for $1…2 million? Maybe $600-800k ala Underworld.

I'm saying there are shitloads more people who fondly remember Bard's Tale than there were who remembered Wasteland from his WL2 pitch. Show me an 80's blobber that wasn't full of trash encounters. Shit, even SSI's gold box games had tons of filler combat. The RPG scene did not start in 1998.

WL2 got the funding it did primarily because of Fallout, not Wasteland.

Hmm. You may have a point. He'll probably time the pitch with the release of some TToN teasers to get everyone hyped.

And Bard's Tale was a big a thing as Fallout. Again, it's like some Codexers think RPGs started in the late 90's. He'll get $500,000 based on the name alone. The pitch and tech demo will account for the other half million.

Codexers aren't the ones who are funding these Kickstarter RPG's (for more than a fraction of the total amount). The people who are are likely most familiar with RPG's from the late 90's, or even the 2000's.

I agree that Bard's Tale probably doesn't have much cachet anymore, but when inXile (and perhaps Obsidian) send emails to all of their tens of thousands of backers telling them to back the next best thing they're making, people stand up and notice. Especially if the graphics are impressive, and according to RPS, what they saw makes Grimrock 2 and MMX look primitive.

Gold Box games were absolutely huge too, and the TSI kickstarter was pretty much a dud. Granted, most of that was because they had no idea wtf they were doing, but still.

Anyway, I played BT a lot way-back-when (on a C-64, even), and I found Wizardry and M&M way better at the entire blobbin' thing. I'll definitely back BT4, but probably not above the basic "early bird" level. If blobbers completely disappeared (like IE games), I'd be more hyped... but I have 3 good-to-great blobbers waiting in my steam library right now, and there are kazillions of Wiz clones (some of them pretty good/challenging) for consoles if one's so inclined.

Press release:

Newport Beach, CA – May 18, 2015 - inXile Entertainment is proud to return to Kickstarter for their next big cRPG project, The Bard’s Tale IV, launching Monday June 2 nd at 6 AM PST/13:00 UTC. Return to Skara Brae for a true dungeon-crawling sequel to the original The Bard’s Tale trilogy that helped define the cRPG genre!

On the 30th anniversary of the original Bard's Tale, what better time than now to go on an adventure worthy of song? The Bard’s Tale IV will feature challenging maze-like dungeons with devious puzzles and riddles to explore in the first-person dungeon crawler style of the original trilogy. inXile has the full rights to use everything from the original trilogy, so the game will be rich with callbacks and old favorites such as teleporter zones and magic mouths.

Utilizing the Unreal 4 engine, The Bard’s Tale IV will also represent a graphical leap forward in the genre, immersing you in a highly detailed and lush world you'll want to map to is farthest reaches. inXile plans to use photogrammetry to create in-game 3D objects from photos of architecture, taken right in Scotland.

With the Bard leading the way, the game has a strong focus on music and sound design. Inspired by and involving Gaelic musicians, the soundtrack and lyrics of The Bard’s Tale IV take cues from Scottish culture, which will be used to enrich the existing setting from the original games.

Of courses, you'll need to contend with all matter of hostile beasts, monsters and brigands as you explore the world. The Bard’s Tale IV will feature a dynamic phase based combat system, utilizing the complex decision making opportunities of traditional phase based combat, but with a constantly evolving enemy strategy and a pacing that keeps you on your toes.

Check The Bard’s Tale IV website to follow along as we count down to the Kickstarter launch, or sign up to receive news and info directly from inXile!

So combat sounds like SNES/PS1 era Final Fantasy. Blobber in spirit, but not presentation. Maybe there will be more to it though.

I imagine Crooked Bee should be happy or at least less mad about the news about maps and movement.

Fargo: I think people want more tight, coherent universes. In some ways, Bard’s Tale 3 went a little off the rails with that kind of craziness, and people want logical explanations for more now. Everyone’s watching things like Game of Thrones and getting more of a sense for what a coherent world is, and they like it. You can have some humour, but it serves you well. People like to lose themselves in the worlds and crave the extra immersiveness.
Fucking storyfaggots, they've destroyed everything :negative:

Egh. I don't know what I was expecting, but I'm not a fan of Gaelic music.

I wonder if custom soundtracking might be a thing.
