I don't know about "downgrades", but purely in terms of effort it seems unlikely that the entire game will be as fancy and detailed as this promotional sequence. They don't have hundreds of people working on this.

Photogrammetry is what they using to try and ease the load isnt it? The team working on Umbra doesn't seem large, but they've managed quite well.

Back it now, so you can take the WL2 free 48h from the promo, if you don't ( omg it's not like the games i used to play when i was 13 y.o. aaaw what a sweet age, THAT was the golden times) like it after most of the aspects have been revealed, unback it ^^ you have a voice there ( unfortunately it is 1-1 linked with your moneyz).

The Vanishing of Ethan Carter who have an even smaller team and budget were able to achieve VERY good results on unreal engine 3 combined with photogrammetry

This shits all over the Fallout stuff. But I had performance concerns about two seconds into the BT video.

I dunno, just the whole dynamic phase-based thing...
What about it? Sounds like a sequential phase-based system which is somewhere between TB and PB, but is more suitable for 'first person' than pure TB.

yeah as I said I really need to see it in action, I probably have a wrong picture of it with all the "react to stuff on the fly" talk.

I'm pretty sure it means that if your action failed (you missed or your spell backfired), you can react and try something else instead of sticking with the predetermined course of action. For example, if there is an almost dead enemy in the group, why assign more than one person to finish him off. However, if that person missed, it's better to be able to assign the task to someone else.

Great in engine video! Very atmospheric thanks to the artstyle and soundtrack. This is what you want for a promo video. Presentation wise im ok with the first person perspective for exploring and zoomed out iso view in combat.

Really, the fo4 trailer seems to be made by summer interns compared to this.

I'm also guessing there could be "phases" in terms of predetermined slices of a turn where you can do only some things and not others, as well as multiple and multi-nested "interruption-immediate reaction" loops after each action.

So I came to the conclusion that they won't deliver both combat views (isometric and first person):

If they go for isometric they must actually move characters from A to B
If they go for first person they don't.

But they surely don't offer both. It's not impossible, but it would be too much work. The devil is in the details, nobody wants that twice.
I ask the question: do they really want to dismiss the dungeoncrawler fans from Grimrock, by using "zooooooooooom out"?

Yeah, I don't mean so much texture quality, but more all the animated details. Swarms of fairies! Blue balls that roll around! All that stuff takes work.

I don't think there will ever be any more than a few of those at a time anyway, so I suppose it's possible.

That or we will see a lot of reuse throughout the game which will make those OMGOOSE effects less OMGOOSE by the time we finish it.. Which is as you said to be expected and IMO not a big deal.

Might and Magic did this except the various characters' turns were intermingled with each other. Which seems better to me.

http://www.pcgamer.com/the-bards-tale-iv-trailer-shows-first-in-engine-footage/

As you can see from the trailer, your party in The Bard's Tale IV won't be locked to a grid. Outside of combat, you'll be able to move freely and in real-time.

 Actually, if I didn't know it's turn-based, I might have thought same. (But he is a journalist, or is he?)

He said outside of combat. Seems right to me?

Oh, yeah. I did it twice in this very thread. I should learn to read (and sleep, I guess).

Engine looks good but we are talking about what seems to be a grid-type-like dungeon crawler which doesn't really compare to anything open-world. Doesn't need to, inexile can compensate that with good story, game mechanics, etc and i do like the way the engine looks though. I still think inexile's writers are less competent than Obsidian's and this game really seems to need a lot of that, hope fargo&co step things up.

I'm keeping an eye on the press now. Not as much reporting of this yet.

Either they are too busy with Fallout 4 or they are writing slightly longer articles than "hey, look at this"... maybe even comparing F4's trailer with BT4's... that would be interesting.

Isn't E3 happening like now or soonish? I don't keep up with that shit but if it's true, plus GTA5, TW3 launched earlier and F4's trailer hitting the market i don't expect Fargo's project to get much publicity, especially since wasteland 2 didn't get PoE's reception in terms of numbers at least.

The Kickstarter campaign is 38 days long, as opposed to the usual ~30. One might infer that E3 has something to do with that.

All 10 of them? HAHAHAHAHA!

I don't Inxile gives a shit about Grimrock's 'fanbase'. If they bring in Inxile's 'fanbase', the KS will be fine. FFS

Looks awesome and what is more important it has ton of interesting stuff in that trailer like speaking door and such.

There's no console factor here though (yet).

Actually, Fargo kind of obliquely referenced the downgrade thing in previous interviews - saying how because it's grid-based and turn-based etc there should be less issues with that sort of stuff and the full graphical power can be unleashed

That is bullshit. Grid vs no Grid has no baring on performance of the game whatsoever aside from design being easier to implement (better pathfinding etc)

But yeah that will get downgraded hard as fuck. InXile doesn't have that many people and i don't see them creating RPG with that kind of level of graphic unless they will be outsourcing most of it to other company.

Either that or BT4 will be 4 hour long corridor game.

This is what I'm expecting. Unless they massively overfund, they simply won't be able to create enough art assets.

The game will either be fairly short or use a ton of duplicate environments.

I mean the 600.000, which Grimlock sold. Inxile would surely appreciate that, given that pledges come in a bit slow lately.
