I just bought Dark Souls on Steam for five bucks. I don't know anything about those games. The only gamepad I have is some noname playstationesque. Should I try to make it work or just go in with mouse+keyboard? How bad can m+k controls be?

Don't be a fag. Get a real controller.

Looks like my gamepad works mostly fine, only the stick to rotate the camera is inverted. Totally tolerable.
Lol, dude what the fuck. This is dark souls, you don't have to torture yourself needlessly. It can be easily fixed.

You need x360ce to make it work properly. Google it and you'll find instructions.
Also, since you'll definitely be using DSfix, if your controller has the Playstation layout be sure to install the Playstation button textures from Dark Souls Nexus.

I've been using my old PSX controller with the PC for a long time now. They sure made them solid back then, this thing is still a beast.

The 360 one is pretty good as well. Bought one two years ago, has suffered all sorts of abuse since and still works fine. The game was made for modern controllers so i don't see the point in trying to play it with an older model. Go either 360 and PS3 or anything analogous to those two.

True I should do this because the inverted analog stick (left and right goes up and down, up and down goes left and right) already made it too frustrating to play, "I fell down the same cliff again!!! Fuck this game and its camera!".
Thanks for the tips.

Are x360 pads that expensive? Even with my amazing lithuanian wage I managed to get one. And an xbone pad after. Get one of those and say goodbye to fucking around with third party programs forever, just plug in and it works perfectly.

Or get a good controller like a PS4 controller, take 2 seconds to make it be recognized as an Xbox controller and live life with a great D-pad instead of unusable trash.

Maybe it's your fingers that aren't very usable cause I have no trouble even with 360 d-pad. And you'd have to be seriously retarded to have problems with a d-pad on xbone pad.

The 360 d-pad IS bad enough that I've died in DS due to hitting the wrong direction on it and switching items incorrectly. I can otherwise play arcade bullet hell shmups on a Saturn pad, so I'd like to think I know how to use one. No clue about the XBone controller, haven't used it.

Well it didn't need much improving. Just make it 4 directions. 360 d-pad definitely is harder to get used to.

It's not a question of getting used to it or it being circular - the d-pad on original Sega Saturn controllers is widely considered to be the best ever made, and it's circular as well. The 360 one was just poorly engineered. But yes, if it's meant to mostly be used for menial tasks like menu navigation, which is how the majority of console games use it nowadays, then may as well make it cross shaped.

Are x360 pads that expensive? Even with my amazing lithuanian wage I managed to get one. And an xbone pad after. Get one of those and say goodbye to fucking around with third party programs forever, just plug in and it works perfectly.
Why would I pay 30€ for a controller that I only use for a 5€ game huh? I don't play retarded console games. This is an exception and the controller looks like shit anyway.
Yes I'm broke you fucknuckle.

For DS: PTDE I set up the controls to mimic DS2 controls. One can achieve this with Autohotkey scripting. DSfix is okay but after DS2 Kb+m I never want to go back to DS: PTDE control schema even with DSfix. DS2 w/Kb+m became fluid-mode once controls were memorized. Switching weapons/spells/drinking pots/throwing daggers w/o having to search for keys while dodging or navigating tight quarters is a big plus for me. Going back to PTDE with almost identical Kb+m set-up made for much more enjoyable experience.
My only issue now is trying to decide what build I want for NG+.

All this talk about PTDE made me reload a new run. Kb+m has been made a little more new player friendly as far as installation goes.

I followed this post on Steam . Installation went well etc. etc.

Surprisingly there is a fair amount of PVP going on. This time the combat is going much better though I am finding the main cause of screw ups (for me) is rolling. Something about how the game interprets WSAD + spacebar is less than optimal. DS II is much more responsive in terms of rolling. For DS: PTDE Kb+m only if you don't console. DS II it seems like Kb+m is much more better implemented.

Having responsive rolling in combat is much more important for a dex light armor build which I suppose is why on my first PTDE runs I was not affected due to STR builds.

Black Knight Greatsword is easy mode. I fully regret that entire run.

yeah I am regretting this dex/caster+BK GS run so far. The way the GS cuts through environment like a hot knife through butter in BlightTown for instance. But seriously can you imagine BlightTown madness if weapons were bouncing uselessly off wooden walls etc. It's not like mobs' weapons don't penetrate as well.

So guys.

It's time for my another playthrough - my fourth DS character! I have never used pyro, not sure why. Literally, not even once to check it out. Any starting pointers? Is there something like a 'pyro' build or some nontrivially obtainable weapons which go particularly well with that?

I mean, it's basically EZ mode. You don't need any stats really, and upgraded the flame won't raise your level, so you can dump a bajillion points into vit and it becomes really hard to die.

Since your stats will be crap, an elemental weapon without scaling is a decent plan I highly recommend the blacksmith giant's hammer- only 16 str requirement, huge range, stuns things well, and has 300 lightning damage when fully upgraded. 16 str is also enough to use the iron round shield, which is by far my favourite shield. Has the same deflection stat as greatshields, but it can parry and doesn't weigh much.

Only rough part of the run will be quelaag, since she's immune to fire and you won't have a decent weapon at that point. I'd just summon an ally to make the fight go faster.

Yeah. I mean, you don't really need him for anything besides checking out what all the boss souls make, and if you're on your 4th run, I'm guessing you're done with that shit.

Yeah. I was just thinking I would, you know, upgrade stuff, just to make sure. I forgot (played DS2 and Bloodborne in the meantime): can I fully upgrade weapons if I kill him?

So guys.

It's time for my another playthrough - my fourth DS character! I have never used pyro, not sure why. Literally, not even once to check it out. Any starting pointers? Is there something like a 'pyro' build or some nontrivially obtainable weapons which go particularly well with that?
if you want to play pyro play it like a man. sls1 and upgrade only your pyro flame and your chaos/lighting club:smug:

no! don't kill Andre! he's the only one who can ascend weapons from from +5 to +6 and +10 to +11!!!

and if you want to go full pyro, imo it's best to go full chaos weaponry (the gargoyle halberd turned ascended to chaos is a beast), as you can get them pretty early (after killing ceaseless you can get the chaos ember near the gangbang of taurus demons, and then just get to the catacombs blacksmith. you also have at least 2 red chunks from the black knights in the asylum). oh, and dex increases cast speed which is most prominent for pyromancies, so getting it to 45 should be a priority, particularly if you want to PvP with it. and then you can use quelaag's furysword to its full potential, which is an excellent weapon and is the only one that actually has the looks of a pyromancers weapon
