I haven't played DaS2 yet, somehow.
How did that fare, area-wise, compared to DaS1? Was it the same deal where the vanilla ran outta steam two thirds thru and the DLC areas were great?
Alright. First off, you know how many areas circle around in Dark Souls 1? Well, there's a lot less of that in Dark Souls 2. Areas tend to be alot more linear as well with less side paths. Quick summary of areas:
- Forest of the Fallen Giants is a pretty sweet starter area, and offers rewards to those who return prepared later in the game.
- Up to the Lost Sinner: the first part is pretty but kinda eh in design (just a straight path with one thing to an optional boss), the second and third parts are pretty cool but the last bit up to the boss is kinda eh.
- Up to the Old Iron King: The second locale is kinda eh in looks and design, but the first, third and especially the fourth are awesome.
- Up to the Duke's Dear Freya: The first part of the Shaded Ruins is lifted straight from a Silent Hill game (SO MUCH FOG) and the second part is kinda eh, the Doors of Pharros is more a formality if you don't want to get to the optional boss and Tseldora is pretty sweet if you like exploring.
- Up to the Rotten: The Gutter is Blighttown but with less light and less annoying dudes trying to poison you, and the Black Gulch is REALLY FUCKING ANNOYING.
- Drangleic Castle is awesome (Anor Londo but in the rain), the Shrine of Amana feels like it's way too long, and the Undead Crypt has a nasty habit of swarming you with enemies.
- The Keep is good if you like indoor locations, the run up to the Shrine is pretty but filled with very powerful enemies so you have to be careful, and the Keep itself feels kinda underused.
As for DLC:
- Crown of the Sunken King has a great atmosphere and exploration options in the first half, but in the second it's kinda a mix of the Shrine of Amana and the Undead Crypt.
- Crown of the Old Iron King is awesome and feels like a cohesive experience, but certain outdoors parts can be rather annoying because of the enemies.
- Crown of the Ivory King I didn't finish yet, but the areas feel connected and it's a nice change of scenery.
