I have a 40 minute train ride to and from work every day. I have two young children and thus it can be difficult to find the time to play video games for a couple hours at a time,
undisturbed.
So it really doesn't matter to me if the original DQ7 on the PlayStation is longer or more in-depth. Even if I owned it, I would likely never get around to playing it. The requirement to return to town to save the game means that I can't really play it unless I have a large enough block of time to play. Which generally means that I'll start a game, play it on a couple of weekends, and then go months without getting back to it, at which point I've forgotten where as I was.
I'll take playing a "dumbed down" version on the 3DS over never getting around to playing the original any day. I'm also perfectly fine with a shorter game; it's not like the 3DS DQ7 is a
short game. The longer the game, the greater the chance that I'll get pulled away by Real Life for a while. When this happens, any deep and complex mechanics that I enjoyed when I first started playing the game become an obstacle to picking it up again several weeks/months later.
Since I bought myself a 3DS, I've been able to get in more time gaming than I had in years. I have Dragon Quest VIII for the PS2. Started playing it when I got it (2006). Got about 25 hours into it before work and other real life stuff consumed most of my time for a while. Tried going back to it a few times, the last about 5 years ago. It had been way too long and I didn't remember much about what I'd done. So I'm looking forward to this on the 3DS too (not interested in playing it on my phone).
(the original does i mean; there's a reason the 3ds version is so cut down it literally cannnot contain the entirety of dq7. dq7 was like 3 ps1 discs and it didn't contain CGI/FMV).
Do you have a source on that? From what I can tell, 3DS cartridges look to have a max size of 4GB (and possibly 8); there are several games that are 3+ GB in size. Looks like the
download version takes up 1.5 GB on the system. Three PS1 CDs -- if filled to capacity -- total 2 GB. However, there was a LOT of duplicated content across each disc in a multi-disc PS game (or on any other console). As the game needs to be able to start and play from any disc, anything that is not keyed to a specific location or event has to be on each disc.
In short, the statement that the 3DS version literally cannot contain the entirety of the PS1 version would seem to be false.
