dq 7 was the last of the true blue DQs and it is truly the series swan song. people keep saying the game is epic but you won't understand until you play it: it easily contains three to four times the amount of text planescape: torment contains

On a scale of 1 to 10, how much of a storyfag are you?

The last thing I want is pages of weaboo shit to read. I want good gameplay.

I really liked DQ8, but mostly because of the combat, itemization, and exploration.

That's good enough for me then. :cool: I don't usually find the post-game content particularly interesting and I have absolutely zero compulsion to achieve 100% playthroughs in any game, ever.

I'm 16 hours into DQ7 and so far I think it's pretty OK. The biggest problem the game suffers from is the pacing of the gameplay. As I said, 16 hours in, and only now I just started on the plot line that will lead me to unlocking Vocations. Up until now I've just been auto attacking enemies and using Heal / Mediheal with the main character when needed. It's kinda bullshit to expect people to be OK with that, and I certainly understand the people who would rather give up on the game than tough it out until you get to the actual fun, but them's the breaks with this game, I guess. The main plot of the game hasn't moved an inch since I unlocked the Shrine (about 30 minutes in the game lol), but the individual plots that take place on each island are quite fun, even if the writing is shit and lame; the usual for a Dragon Quest game, really. TBH the only Dragon Quest with a passable plot is DQ5. Hopefully the gameplay will pick up once I unlock the Vocations.

Only if by "pick up" you mean learn a shitty ability or two per island until you get the one good ability that replaces your auto attack that you'll be using 100% of the time, like Falcon Slash since they forgot to give it an MP cost. Standard Dragon Quest.

Or the spells you'll hardly ever use because you need to save your MP for healing to work through the attrition.

I unlocked the classes yesterday. I haven't gotten that many useful skills yet, except for Maribel who I made a Mage and who has gotten some cool monster party wiper spells. At least its given me something to work forward though, with goals on how I want to develop my characters.

Edit: Playing this game is such a drag. I've finally freed Sir Mervyn and I'm feeling really heavy fatigue. This game is so awful. It's easy as shit, the plot is nearly non-existent and the little island stories are really shallow and banal. Some of them have a nice premise and setup, but then it never goes anywhere interesting. The whole game is just backtracking through towns all the goddamn time. 50% of the game content is revisiting the same areas you just cleared in the past. The whole "this game is long" meme is just that, a meme. It's not particularly long by PS1 era jRPG standards, but it is a long Dragon Quest game, and that's only because they've copy pasted half the fucking game. This just reinforces my opinion that DQ is a garbage series with only the Dragon Warrior Monster spin off games being worth playing.

I've beaten DQ1 (GBC), DQ4 (DS), DQ5 (DS), and DQ8 (PS2), and I loved all of them. But I'm currently playing through DQ9 on DS, and having a hard time enjoying it. The game just feels casualized and a bit vapid. Maybe it's just me, I don't know. DQ9 was very highly reviewed and everyone I know who played through it seem to love it. But I just find I have to force myself to play the game, and after 30 minutes I'm usually starting to fall asleep. Oh well, it didn't stop me from buying DQ7 for 3DS recently.

Didn't like DQ9 for the same reasons as you. AFAIK the way to enjoy that game is to play it with friends and run the end game dungeons (called grottos) for loot. Well, I didn't have any friends with a handheld or who has even heard of Dragon Quest, so I was kinda fucked.

Probably the best description there is. 8 probably started the casualization in terms of new releases, but it was just enough that you were still left with an enjoyable experience.

Very good point. I know a few folks who absolutely adore DQ9. The reasons they all cite are the same; the endgame (or post-game even). The grottos, hunting super hard bosses, and grinding for items to alchemize into rare gear. While none of that sounds particularly exciting to me, they still conveniently neglect to mention the part where you have to sludge through ~20 hours of bland tedium to reach that stuff. It's worth noting the players I'm talking about did not have significant experience with DQ before DQ9, and I think that explains everything. I don't think Dragon Quest XI will carry this design thankfully.

Yep. Tried it on my freshly modded Vita. Still a bit early for impressions. Got it originally for my boy as got irritated at him playing Minecraft since for me a game without a narrative or clear sense of progression and end game is pointless. Seems fun enough so far, ,even though the handholding for the first hour pissed me off.

It's on its way, but I did give the demo a bit of a go on ps4. I think what will make it break it in the end for me is what's available for side content. As Commie mentioned, the initial handholding is annoying.

Started playing the 3DS edition of DQ7 and holy shit is the menu system beyond awful.
Not only is it horrifically unresponsive, you can actually see the entire game stutter and choke whenever you navigate the fucking things, and it can scarcely process a breathtaking 2 button presses per second.
In fact, it even feels like the entire game is throttled at 12FPS or so whenever a menu is open, no matter how basic the damn thing is.

And doing bloody ANYTHING via these shitty menus takes 50x longer than it has any right to; well okay, I'm exaggerating by a factor of 5 at most.
But the difference between this and Stranger of Sword City is insane; in the time it takes me to input the combat actions for ONE character (even when my only option is ATTACK), I can complete an entire round of combat in SoSC and be well on my way inputting commands for the second.

45 minutes of the German version. (Still English audio)


Two new playable characters, no random encounters and I think there's a fast forward option in battle. Unfortunately, there's no orchestrated soundtrack.

Dragon Quest Heroes II coming out next year on April 25. For PS4 (and I bet Siveon's left nut for Nintendo Switch).

There's less tower defending elements in this one. I think it's more open world styled. Anyway, I'm excited. I played the first game in small doses until I beat it.

My bad. I was sure it was PC and PS4. I edited that out.

maybe no PC version makes sense since the first had abysmal numbers. Then again, the PS4 version didn't set the charts on fire.

Shame, the first one was pretty good. Not surprised though, most of the genre is garbage, with no mechanics to speak of, just aimlessly swinging your sword around until the battle ends. Doubt a lot of people even looked at any gameplay.

Well, first Dragon Quest Heroes came to pc without any announcement two months after release of english version on console. I guess sequel could be ported on pc in simillar way since Temco for some reason does that with games made by Omega Force.

The world in Dragon Quest XI is called "Lotozetasia," (Loto being a super important character in Dragon Quest) which has a World Tree at its center. According to director Uchikawa, "It is a vast map comparable to previous Dragon Quest titles. It won't betray your expectations."


the casino will return, where you’ll be able to play slots, poker, and mini-games that differ based on the hardware. The 3DS version is compatible with StreetPass, while charming elements are also being prepared for the PlayStation 4 version.

I dislike all the dragon quest games for their simplicity. I honestly think 3D innovation is the way for this series to progress at least in that regard it develops somewhat. Dragon quest 9 for example you can see all your gear on your guys. Dragon quest 11 looks visually great better then every next gen JRPG released but a ps4 is not worth it.

Started the 1st Dragon Warrior, way too grindy, then moved to DQIV(remake) and now I'm in chapter 4. I found it very boring, though I like the style, music, but seriously, not worthy even getting ended. Are the other entries less.. simplistic?

Try Dragon Warrior Monsters if you want something more in depth. The main series never reaches any heights and is always extremely simple, even when they have character classes.
