The problem with starting an MM6 run-through is the time investment. To finish VARN and The Hive you need to be near max-level which takes around 100 hours at a minimum. I always tend to get burnt out towards the end of the game as a result.

No.

This game has a level cap? Never reached it myself
Me either, but I suspect it's similar to MM5 (trainers will stop training you past a certain level). Not sure what it is though, as I think I only got to ~120 or so. MM7 had much lower level, finished it around 80 (then again MM7 didn't throw as many hordes at you).

Game's getting better now that I have some crowd control spells and some bows. Still feels like a bit of a chore at times, I do get the feeling the designers could have done with balancing quality and quantity a bit.

EDIT: okay, my initial reservations are fading somewhat, subsequent dungeons have been more palatable. My preference tends to be for short and sweet, but some of these are pretty good. I think the fabled Temple of Baa might make or break me now.

I'd forgotten how good bows are in six. Currently cutting through the majestic negros of Booty Bay.

Well, the Temple of Baa was pretty much nothing, actually found it pretty fun. Bows and fireballs help immeasurably, the early game was a damn pain.

even the big altar room on top after you touched the gong?

i just hid up on the balcony and bolted them with arrows.

Run in circles, zip across the room to bunch them together, spam fireball then arrows until they're in melee range, run away in real time, repeat. I love single big fights like that, it's stuff like the abandoned temple's endless corridors of 20 cobras, 5 blood suckers and 10 spiders that drain me.

Currently about level 19, quest log is filled with Lord and second-tier advancement quests. Still trying to put together the cash for half the spells at Free Haven, think I'm going to venture to the frozen north in search of advancement quests for my Archer and Cleric. Not sure if I'm enjoying the game as much as the 2D iterations - it's still much more of a timesink without any huge benefits to offset that - but it's still addictive as hell and the skill system's good fun.

If you didn't get it there's a specific torch in the temple of Baa which dispenses 5000 gold if you click on it.

It's behind the altar to the right, on the part where the path is heading upwards.

Man, just the sheer mention of the Temple of Baa, makes me want to re-install and play that again. God that battle was always fucking epic (for me).

I absolutely loved it too. Though I found a sneaky way to go about it. First, I entered the balcony using the secret passage behind the altar. Then, I waited for all the skeletons to gather next to the balcony. Finally, I spammed the circle of fire (or whatever it's called) spell all day long, as it wounds not only the creature on the same level as you, but also those below and perhaps also those above you.

For me, the skeleton fight in Temple of Baa is one of the worst encounters in the game. Mowing down a horde of opponents is fun when it's actually a challenge, but that fight just encourages exploits. If there were at least some priests spawning alongside the skeletons or something...

Ah, but finding out those exploits is half the fun!

Poor wording on my part. I am aware of the many exploits in MM6-8 and while I prefer not using them (too much), I don't mind them. They are an integral part of the engine. But a fight that is basically the essence of tedious and more or less forces you into using an exploit (the alternative is fighting them for a long time, unless you're high level at that point) is just shit.

Once you get the multishot spells up to Master, magic quickly replaces might as being the most effective. Sparks or Poison Spray at point blank range can take off over 100 or more hit points for a small spell point cost.

Still, they pale before Sharpmetal. Despite it's high spell point cost.

Really enjoying the dungeons more as I go. The Fire Lord's Halls was just great; atmospheric, full of combat but never feeling drawn-out to the point of boredom, maze-like and just the right size. Definitely finding this game a lot harder than MM3-5 were, but that's a good thing.

To lower reputation I usually kill several NPCs in nearby town. To raise it - donate and do lord's quests.

For light mastery, the only way I know is doing all the quests until you hit saintly reputation. In MM6 donating to temples used to give you a limited amount of reputation for a short time and reset it to neutral after a while. Although this is probably fixed in a patch.

For dark, yeah, kill those townsfolk. Killing them, reanimating and killing them again until you hit the lowest reputation also used to work IIRC.

It's far easier to get the lowest reputation than the highest reputation. For that reason, I'd prioritize quests that will lower reputation(fixing the carriage and returning stuff from the cobra infested dungeon at New Sorpigal). You can sell bones for gold which will also lower reputation. Once you have the lowest reputation, get Dark magic and procede to increase reputation back to normal by donating to temples. A Bard NPC also raises reputation by one level, so that can come in handy for when your reputation is close to the highest.
