Interesting to revisit Jedi Master Radek's interview with Leonard from 2016: https://rpgcodex.net/content.php?id=10425

Since the collapse of Troika, have there been any games with an art style that appealed to you as an artist? If so, what are they?

· Bioshock and Bioshock Infinite - felt very akin to the FO/Arcanum aesthetic to me in a lot of ways, and I obviously have a lot of love for both the retro and steampunk genres.

· Dishonored - great job of stylization over photorealism, making their characters and world realistic and painterly at the same time (something we tried and failed to do with our characters in Vampire), plus an interestingly different take on a steampunk type world.

· Wolfenstein New Order - Hmmm... I'm sensing a trend here... loved the feel of their world.

These are all beautiful games in their own right, but they're also all very original and different, which is usually a huge part of whether a game's art appeals to me or not.

That new Cuphead game looks awesome, as well, even though I'm not much into side scrollers.

The clues were there all along!

Thus my fear that he could've made the character models cartoony, phew.

Y'know this line from a Gamespot interview was posted earlier but no one paid any attention to it.

Leonard Boyarsky said:
Obviously our combat isn't going to be as good as Call of Duty because that's not what we are here to do.

They don't even expect to hit the low bar that is CawwaDuty. Anyone expecting anything more than a typical molepopper is foolish.

I feel like something is lost when devs admit their games will be garbage this early.

the engine source code is hidden.
https://svn.fonline.ru/listing.php?repname=FOnline+SDK

and if you could see it, I can almost guarantee it would be mammoth like.

As for the api binding and scripting side i'm not saying it's bad, but the way things get done are limited to how the engine (closed) wants you to do them.

For both client and server the zips don't include source code for the engine. However some of the assorted tools have some actual source code.
By looking at the documentation much of the game related stuff is exposed to the scripters, a good job has been done.
But by far not a universal solution. I wouldn't limit Fallout Games at their core to the features as they have been envisioned by fonline.

While more things can be added by scripting you're never going to have a different engine.
Sure the documentation hints at interesting design choices which can be helpful for some, it's irrelevant.

The real scrooge's kaboodle will be the details of the game fallout ironed out in a way they are usable in many engines. (must be open source.)

it's just an example of popular first person shooter, i doubt there is something deep behind these words.

2. CoD is not so bad

Not so bad? I don't know how it is these days, last CoD I played was MW2 and it was very good and I assume first person gun play must be very good for all the people who play it, continue playing it... its a huge part of a first person shooter & nothing else game despite what anyone thinks of CoD franchise in the current year. So obviously it won't be as good here in a not even an AAA RPG :P What the fuck are you expecting?

So graphics is not on the level of a Naughty Dog game, shooting won't be as good as a shooter that sells 10 milion every year...are we on RPG codex?

I'm not gonna be a dick about this. I'm still gonna hold out and see how it plays. Tim and Leon.

they are not tim and leon. They are TIMNARD!! Previously a three-headed deity but Brian Mitsoda has separated into a separate deity known as SODAGOD. But legend has that one day the three may unite again and form the heralded TIMNARDSODA once again...

Oh but there is. Because these words need not have been said at all.
Yep. Boyarsky is too honest. He should tell you why you want to buy a car and not why you don't want to buy it by telling you its faults.

Bitching is a Codex tradition. We do it because we want our games to be good, not because we despise a developer.

Devs can listen if they want to, or not.

So, people have given up expecting decent combat from what is effectively a triple A company, now?

Being realistic =/= giving up.

It already looks decent to me from what little we've seen, it might be worse or better, there'll be many factors; enemy types, AI etc. at the least it doesn't look clunky, f.i. like Elex :D

When it comes to shooter mechanics and gameplay, isn't Call of Duty considered one of the best if not the best at that genre. But, yeah. Let's call it a low bar because you don't happen to like it :)

it was one of the best, but right now it's not - there is no environmental destruction, guns have zero recoil and weak sound, enemies all die in some cartoony premade animation.

You're probably doing it wrong when even pcgamesn and gamesradar say you're full of shit. There are more sites that confirm this, but I think you get the point.
That said, CoD is low bar. Maybe Boyarsky doesn't realize this or simply misspoke, but that is actually how it is.

Wasn't this described as Leonard's "dream rpg"?

Kind of surprised this is what they're going for as a "dream" RPG.

well, i think ever since vampire, leonard has always wanted to make another big, FPP action RPG. considering that journey to the center of arcanum is kinda like that + ultima underworld. this seems in line. don't have the "immersive sim underground exploration" part, but the action RPG + FP with same style quest design as arcanum/vampire freedom
