I mean I like John Gonzalez and all, but that guy is no less a leftist nor exactly without fault in the writing department. New Vegas being imo the only one that stands out.
Gonzalez isn't on twitter or tumblr, which is a big deal. Additionally, while on the bland side, his work on DS3 wasn't bad.

John G. wrote a good part of Anjali's dialogue, and he did an overall polish pass on many of the side-quest NPCs in the game.

Travis wrote most of Reinhart's dialogue and about half of Katarina. He also wrote a lot of side-quest NPCs like Leona, the Gunderics, Drakomir, Fitch, etc.

The remainder of the side quest dialogue was written by the respective area designers.

I wrote the main plotline dialogues (Marten and Odo, Dapper Gent, Meisters, Jeyne, archons, etc.), plus most of Lucas and some of Katarina.

I'm not really talking about his work at Obsidian.....

And as you said, while I like DSIII even Anjali's dialouge I wouldn't call a standout. There's even better written stuff in there as well.

Edit: And to reiterate I like John Gonzalez. But, putting him on some pedestal after New Vegas is weird.

The writing in Borderlands fits perfectly with the setting and gameplay. There's a reason people have been clamoring for the 3rd one, while no one has been asking for a sequel for deadfire.

Are we really going with the "millions of flies cant go wrong" argument now? You should maybe cool it with the edgelording a little bit...

Also, going by your logic, i am pretty sure some of those 93% of all steam users who gave Deadfire a positive review would like to play a sequel.

Why is one user base more valid than the other? What i see from millions of players who bought and enjoyed the borderlands series, is outright excitement every time the possibility of a sequel is brought forward, gearbox must have done something right do elicit such reactions.

On the other hand, most obsidian fans are such due New Vegas, like it or not, thats their defining game, the one who brought them the most notoriety, buyers and fans. Speak to most obsidian fans and they will daydream about Bethesda giving the fallout license back to obsidian for a new rpg. Pillars of Eternity, Dungeon Siege, Alpha Protocol, South Park, Armored Warfare, Pathfinder Adventures, elicit no such response.

But Fallout is a world phenomenon among casuals thanks to Bethesda, while Obsidian's other games are niche games. So of course the mainstream knows Obsidian after New Vegas. And just for the record, if you go on to the Obsidian forums, you see that they are huge fans of the Pillars series, so it's not entirely true that Obsidian's other games didn't earn them too much recognition.

As it seems we can talk about Borderlands in the Outer World thread (if not veganism) I will add my ramblings.

The art style is something you either like or not however it isn't childish that just makes no sense.I will say the games have already aged far better than any of their contemporaries because of it.
Outer Worlds slightly apes the style but it's not really as well executed.The Borderlands games also play well and I believe I've never CTD whilst playing them.

With all the dlc the game is also vast with an extraordinary amount of content.

As to the writing it was humorous sometimes cringey often very funny.
Importantly tho' you had no problem remembering characters even down to one who's single purpose was you shoot him in the face.
I play many games where I've usually forgotten who I was talking to literally the moment I walked away on the collection quest they inevitably gave me.

It also has a solid end game there's a lot of loot to play around with and more importantly character builds become very interesting whole threads on forums and a staggering amount of YouTube video's cover this and the entertainment it provides.

Co-op is also a major plus for many players.

Vivid colors aren't really my thing in video games. As old and tried grimdark visuals are, I prefer a somewhat dark, greyish or brownish overtone. It's easier on the eyes.
Everything else we've seen so far reminded me way too much of Bioshock, which I quit after a few hours because it sucked to kill the same 5 enemies with the same 3 strategies over and over again. The whole underwater city shtick would've been interesting, but since the story was more of a sales angle than anything else, that was disappointing too.
Gameplaywise there isn't any real data that would allow for a fact-based discussion. I for one wouldn't mind a combat system close to New Vegas. At least the ranged weapons were interesting. Crafting new guns or weapons is also a plus in my book.
Also weapon degradation. I know the whole discussion about a meaningful economy in RPGs or the need for a money drain won't be fixed by this. I just enjoy it.
New Vegas' Survival mode is something I wouldn't mind seen replicated as well. I get that it's not for everyone to cook meals just for survival, but it's a nice feature. I remember fondly the nights where I roasted vast amounts of cacti over my campfire.
I haven't played Borderlands, so I can't tell whether that game is any good or not. The art style alone isn't enough to infer similar gameplay or design choices though. I don't mind it particularly. As long it's not eye-cancer a la Oblivion.
So far I'm not as hyped as I hoped I would be.
Maybe I'll just replay Bloodlines with the new Plus Patch.

The problem is that the player base of PoE 2 is now only ~10 - 15% the size PoE's player base, which is just a tiny sliver of our niche genre (oldschool RPGs). Compare that to the size of the Borderlands fan base.

To be fair, I'm quite certain more gamers would like to play Deadfire, they're just waiting for the 5 dollar bargain bin deal.

It seems you walk&turn incredibly slow according to a gameplay video i saw. Slow as shit. Like you were an elderly man in a wheelchair, just waiting for your diaper to fill up with shit and piss. But you are in cheap nursing home so theres rarely any assistance. You just stare outside through a window with your diaper bursting with shit.

Coincidentally Anthony Burch is the brother of Ashley Burch which was the main VA of Horizon: Zero Dawn which was the last game from John Gonzalez which was a linear (as in narrativly) Action Game pretending to be an RPG which had constant SJW undertones (except for one quest that was overly SJW) which has an enjoyable enough executed (but somewhat cliched) story but not much else.

Which is why I don't really know why John Gonzalez seems to have become some symbol for Obsidian on the codex but ymmv.

And again I enjoyed and still enjoy his work (and he's better than Obsidian's current crop of writers) but seesh. Putting him above Tim and Leonard for some reason is still baffeling to me.

The Outer Worlds, the next game from the developers at Obsidian, might be the game I’m most excited for in 2019. Helmed by the original creators of Fallout, it appears poised to be the New Vegas successor that everyone has wanted for years. Just don’t expect it to be quite as vast.

The Outer Worlds, which was announced last week at The Game Awards, is a sci-fi role-playing game set in a universe where corporations have taken over everything. Obsidian communications director Mikey Dowling showed me footage of the game in Los Angeles last week, and it looks excellent, primed to be a charming, funny game full of dialogue choices and interesting decisions. With Fallout 4 disappointing some fans and Fallout 76 launching in rough shape, The Outer Worlds could be just the RPG people have been craving.

Just calibrate your expectations properly. The Outer Worlds, which has been in development since late 2016, is published by Private Division, a label of Take-Two Interactive (parent company of 2K and Rockstar) designed to make “AA” games. They’re not indie, but they’re not big-budget “AAA” RPGs like The Witcher 3or Fallout New Vegas, either. So don’t expect The Outer Worlds to be quite as vast, with a massive open world in which you can get lost for hundreds of hours. This will be a very different experience.

There are two planets in the game, Obsidian says, although they’re not open worlds—they’re compartmentalized. Each of them contains several areas to explore, and Obsidian says there will be plenty to do, but the scale will be very different than New Vegas. “While we aren’t discussing the exact amount of areas, a good bit of context for the approach is to think of what we did in Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic II, with potentially more ground to cover and explore in each area,” Dowling said in an e-mail.

Not that this is a bad thing. To those of us who don’t have tons of free time and love the idea of an RPG that can be finished without sacrificing an entire month to the scheduling gods, The Outer Worlds seems just perfect. But with all the Fallout New Vegas comparisons floating around, it’s important for people to know exactly what we’re getting.

Because horizon zero dawn has a better story and world building than everything obsidian has ever done. I was truly not expecting how that story turned out, which is something I can't say about obsidian latest efforts.
