People seem so focused on REEing at this game's art direction that they're ignoring potentially interesting design aspects like the disguises mechanic Duraframe posted about two pages ago.

Long overdue. We had that (although in a more primitive way) in Hitman and even in previous Fallout titles as well. I hope talking your way out of the situation can be done not only with skill/attribute checks, but with info gathering and bribes as well.

That, however, doesn't change the fact that the game looks offputting. You either:

a) go for realism and deliver top-notch graphics if you have the funds/talent
b) go for highly stylized graphics which hide the low-poly models and bland textures (Dishonored)
c) move the camera angle far away and create a turn-based game (Wasteland 3)

Having FPS only combat and zoom-in dialog faces with shitty outdated graphics isn't really the smartest move and shouldn't get a free pass over and over again just because it's Obsidian.
I hope someone in Microsoft takes control over their next project and introduces some basic fucking sense to the decision-making process.

Leonard did talk about specific insperation for the artstyle in one of the interviews. Can't seem to find it atm though.
He also mentioned some of his general insperations in nearly the same breath including Deadwood.

He's also a fan of first person and was upset Bethesda did it first for Fallout. That was from a different interview though, I think.

Edit: Well, the first person thing isn't really a suprise. He did direct Bloodlines after all.

It seems we're running in circles. I have no problems with the artstlye whatsoever. The inspirations are obvious.
There is no problem with going first person either.

The problem is that the game's graphics aren't appropriate for either.

a) highly realistic graphics for a retro-futuristic game (although they went in the other extreme and had too washed out colors)
The-Order-1886-Taipei-Game-Show-Screenshot-1.jpg

b) highly stylized graphics that hide the aging tech (Dishonored)

I heard that too somewhere. Incline right there, though I don't expect hearing "limp dick cocksuckers" used among Shakespearean dialog.

THE OUTER WORLDS WILL HAVE MULTIPLE ENDINGS - E3 2019

The Outer Worlds will have multiple endings based on how you play.

In an interview with IGN at E3 2019, Megan Starks - Senior Narrative Designer for Outer Worlds - confirmed "there are many different endings" based on how you play but just how many endings there are will remain a mystery until the game comes out.

One of the main characteristics of this extreme capitalist dystopia is the fact that you can play however you want, from threatening quest givers to picking locks instead of heading straight for the door. So you'll have to play through The Outer Worlds multiple times to see all the core story beats it has to offer.

The Outer Worlds will be released on October 25 for Xbox One, PS4, and PC.

I find it very curious how in vast majority of the games it's almost always "capitalist dystopia" or right-wing dystopia, and not communist/socialist or left-wing dystopia.

I think the art style matches to not so serious atmosphere of the game without going full Borderlands and I like it.

Compare faces and their expressions especially in dialogue to alpha protocol and it is a downgrade, which is impressive. Alpha protocol wasn't even great when it came out and its realism didn't age well. However even then the faces in this old, fairly mediocre game graphics wise look so much better and expressive than outerlands. Why didn't they just make a stylised game? Dishonored 1 looks great, bioshock 1 looks great for most part. This is just old gamebyro levels of terrible. No one is asking for high graphic fidelity for a fairly low budget game but that is not the issue here.

If only could every game look great like Dishonored. If only !!!

They probably wanted to stay away from monochormatic style of F3 and NV.

If they'd use one colour, everybody would complain it looks the same as F3.

I don't think it's really the quality of the faces that is the issue here. The faces are fine. I think what's really setting people off is the game's color scheme. In terms of their colors, the "photorealistic" and the "stylized" images in Cyberwhale's post look more similar to each other than either does to The Outer Worlds image.

Anyway:

Look at this, keeping in mind that alpha protocol is actually mediocre itself and even though the game aged terribly because of its realism, the faces look so much more expressive and natural:

Compare this to shocked face of that NPC from the previous trailer with "you keep being you" or the new trailer with that guy on the floor. It is just insane how bad it is. Also the style is coherent for a spyflick aesthetic. Compared to what should be retrofuturistic space frontier.

The only characters in The Outer Worlds that look convincing are the niggers.

Stop with racist nonsense.

The facial animations in that early gameplay demo when that short-haired girl is talking to your character looked convincing. Nothing great but at least it was alpha protocol level. The trailers and some other gameplay montage it looks so terrible, either overacted or no proper reaction.

C'mon let's be honest, it looks like shit right now. It looks like overwatch made a gritty game™. Boyarski should take control and fix it or concede defeat as an artist :shittydog:

I have to agree that the game's looks aren't very good. Textures, character models and color patterns are all fairly unappealing. Hopefully we'll get some mods with more tasteful visuals, though the artstyle as a whole feels ugly to me so it might not be enough.

Finally caught up with the trailer. I'm at a loss as to how any studio could unironically make something so stupid and asinine.

Corporations rule everything. Corporations can't be challenged. Life feels bad, man. Wait! A generic [anti-]hero has come among us and will stick it to the Man! Long live generic [anti-]hero and the revolution!

Sweet mother of fuck, Obsidian. Really?

Imagine if they actually did an urban RPG like vtmb or alpha protocol (but more RPG) which involved you dealing with corporations and the criminal underworld instead of this now overdone retrofuturistic space frontier where you just have bunch of towns at best.
