Alright it took me quite some time to finally get to download it but to my defense, my internet is pretty bad since I moved in a new apt recently.
I heard quite a lot about it, seems to be that typical kind of games which divides its playerbase regarding its actual quality (or lack of). It was about time I made my own opinion, as it got more and more complicated to see through the bullshit.
First, I need to address this immediately, since it's the core of the gameplay : the shooting is a bit lacking. I mean, some might say it's not suprising, as bethesda games tend to suck in that department -and always have if i'm to believe the poor folks who tried that weird ass action game they released before making rpgs- but let me remind you that this isn't actually a bethesda game, they didn't actually develop it, despite what a lot of people might think at first glance.
Weapons are not varied enough, especially compared to the prestigious ancestors which reputation this game tries to live up to. You might think : "Well, MajorCunt, it's not the same gameplay at all, a couple of decades have passed by, it was obviously much easier to offer a large array of guns back then, quit bitching about it, at least you have more options than just shooting through everything now". Well, some might argue you had other options than shooting through everything back then as well, but that's not the point.
The point is, in a nutshell : the shooting isn't very good. And since that's the main way to interact with your foes in this game, it's a bit disappointing.
Second, an important aspect of the game : the level-design. Now that's pretty solid actually. I didn't expect much from it, the premise of the game didn't offer much to be excited for in that regard. Especially considering the modern trends of game design. But it's interesting to explore it, actually utilises all 3 spatial dimensions, hides stuff literally everywhere and allows for a variety of approaches in every level !
Now, again, some people will think I'm over-exaggerating but this truly gave me the impression that this game surpasses its ancestors in that specific department. It just feels good to explore, the same couln't be said back in the XXth century.
Storywise, the writing kinda sucks, it's true. But that's not really all that impactful on the experience. Sure, I think the way they portray the people & organisations in power as literal nazis, whose depiction is pushed to the caricature for the sake of weird characterisation -which itself doesn't work, for me at least- is quite baffling, and pretty bad overall. But at the end of the day, it matters little and the only reason I'm moving on is curiosity. Despite the shooting, which isnt very compelling, I find a lot of amusement in just... well going forward.
Now to my real grief, I know it's [current year] and certain things are now considered inacceptable, but the fact you can't side with the bad guys is a serious oversight (if not the fruit of self-censorship). I can already hear the sjws scream "what is wrong with you, you fascist ? Siding with these literal nazis ? Are you outside of your mind right now ?" but I'm all for consistent and solid C&C. The player should be given the opportunity to fight for whichever side they consider is worth fighting for. Politics shouldn't matter in this decision.
Overall, I'm glad I picked up this game, I haven't finished yet, I'm cleaning the levels, one bunker at a time. In a word, Wolfenstein : The New Order is popamole, but it's good popamole.
