The STEAM Sales and Releases Thread

A Valley Without Wind just showed up on Steam. Randomly generated "Metroidvania" kinda sorta style game. Thing. http://store.steampowered.com/app/209330/

Vaguely remember BLOBERT talking about being interested in such a game in some thread, and here one is. Absolutely no idea if it's any good or not but I'm vaguely interested.

Torchlight 2 up for preorder -- $20, no discounts or TF2 hats just a copy of the first game to keep and/or gift if you have it. Everyone I know already has it so... not going to preorder.

I'm sure they'll be lame and release after the Summer Sale so as not to allow for an almost immediate discount.

gemini rue half off today, worth it?

Think it might be in an upcoming bundle -- the Bundle in a Box. From neogaf via CAG:

Bundle in a Box went live for a few minutes. I bet it will launch later today.

Reported games: Gemini Rue, Time Gentlemen, Please!, Ben There, Dan That!, 1983: A World's Fair Mystery, Lands of Dream

Apparently the min was $4.01 and it would drop after 1,000 buys.

info is from neogaf

From Amazon Deal Guy on CAG:

Look forward to deals on Deus Ex ($6.99/$7.99 Standard/Augmented) Dungeon Siege III $5, some KILLER Double Fine deals, Serious Sam Franchise sales and our May event, which you guys are going to go nuts for.

All of that stuff activates on Steam.

The Cursed Crusade on sale, never heard of it, any thoughs?
(I like brainless slashers, like LOTR: War in the North, but not faggotry stuff like Devil May Derp, as reference)

Thief Gold and Thief 2 have been added to the Steam registry but with a pricing disclaimer of 'Proof of prepurchase only' which leads me to believe they'll only be available if you preorder Thief 4. Maybe they'll sell them separately, too. Also an entry with the same 'pre purchase' disclaimer was added for Arx Fatalis so maybe you get a free copy of that if you preorder the new Arkane game.

Shit...guess I'd better preorder Thief 4 when it shows up.

I've been trying to get Thief and Thief 2 to work on my computer for years but it's never worked, if a Steam version is actually compatible with my computer then preordering Thief 4, no matter how popamole that game is, will be worth it.

I wouldn't be sure that Steam versions of Thief 1 and 2 would work properly on modern machines. Old games on Steam have a pretty hit or miss record. Unless the publisher made a deal with GoG so they can sell GoGified versions elsewhere, or the publisher themselves paid to patch 'em to run properly.

Still, that's a damn fine preorder bonus for Thiaf. Already got Thief 3 on Steam and I would be tempted as shit to have 1 and 2 on there too.

I bought fallout pack on steam when it was like 5 dollars with the assumption the colors wouldn't be all fucked on windows 7, and guess what they look the goddamn same.

The best course of action is to download Fallout via Steam, then pirate GoG version of Fallout, then install it, then copy it over the Steam installation.

IIRC the only workaround I found that didn't involve using GoG was killing explorer.exe after launching the game and fuck that noise.

Why the fuck do old games do the squiggly rainbow colors anyway. Diablo2 requires alt tabbing until a viewable version comes up on screen, and even then act 2 is always a mess.

Never buy older games from Steam.

I'm really surprised that isn't a bigger deal with gamers: those titles almost never fucking work with modern systems. They just put up them up for sale, usually at overblown prices, and then don't give a rat's ass whether or not it works after you buy it. That's why you should always check the forums first to find the inevitable wave of complaints about incompatibility.

I have had the misfortune to try the CoD3 free weekend and it left me feeling dirty and violated.

The game is about fast action, getting perks and xp that skewer the odds, it's possible to die instantly after spawning, and it's about keeping players interested by "unlocking" classes / skills just at those moments where you think - let me stop this shit, the game sucks. I come from mostly RTcW and Enemy Territory and this CoD3 was not worth the disc space it used to occupy.

Weird. A video gaming buddy just bought me Toy Soldiers on a whim. I'll post some impressions after I fuck around with it.

Why not buy the GOG.com versions? They work perfectly fine on newer machines AND don't require Steam!
