This is all related to the Steam thread because Gaben said Windows 8 is a catastrophe, you see.

I guess gaben doesn't want Microsoft competing with Steam with the built-in stores.

Upgrading Windows 7 to Windows 8.

Are you sure?
Wanna know what Windows update looks like in Windows 8 if you hit Windows key and type in windows update, and then after launching it expand the additional settings under the "Charms" menu?

(now that the codex has comedy fodder, there's still a windows 7 version squirreled in there too. either access it via the control panel or use one of the more obtuse sounding righthand options in a windows key search)

http://i.imgur.com/vL5LG.jpg The search options, the two on the left are retarded metro version, ones on the right are real.

I don't see the point of upgrading to 8. 7, yes. It was definitely a step-up from Vista and everyone knew that beforehand. 8 is focused on tablets and touchscreen. The new interface is a nightmare.

DOS->Win 3.1->Win 95->Win 98SE->Win XP SP2->Win 7->Debian Linux

Yeah, personally I think we should go back to using coal power and cart & oxen to get around. And don't forget leeches as medicine!

How anyone can say DOS and 3.1 are better than 7... beyond me...

Edit: Never mind, didn't see the -s

The arrows were "leads to". Not "is better than". As in, "this is the chronological upgrade path of your OS if you want a gaming rig and don't want your OS to suck".

Because once God-GabeN (PBUH) brings the steams to Linux proper, Windows will have served its purpose. You can substitute debian for whatever linux distro you prefer, as long as it's not the awful mess that is Ubuntu.

Unlikely. It might grow, but even a market share growth of 100% over the next 5 years is highly optimistic and even then it's no share at all.

Linux won't grow properly unless it's standardised and drops GPL. Neither of which will ever happen. That's even before you start comparing them on merit, which is obviously going to be quite unfair.

Fixed. :smug:

Right, because playing games on WINE, or using shitty Linux ports that get half the performance is totally great.

Ah. Honest misreading on my part. Apologies, have amended my post.

Pretty much all the games I care to play run just fine in WINE. But then I prefer stuff that's turn-based or has simple graphics. So the performance hit from running WINE doesn't really affect me. Hopefully the Steams and God-GabeNs attempts to get nvidia and ati to produce better linux drivers will see the gaming platform mature for those who desperately crave next-gen piss filters and bloom. But even if it doesn't, plenty of the upcoming kickstarter indies seem likely to run just fine on linux without wine.

Alright so there's the Halloween sale. I'm thinking of getting the following, none of which I've played:

Rage for $10
Fallout: New Vegas + DLC for $15
FEAR 3 for $5

Yay or nay?

New Vegas is WELL worth the 15$ SMA. But keep in mind is is a GREAT cRPG using that fucking shit Fallout 3 engine.

Gotta love that regional pricing. For example, Alice: Madness Returns is $5 and 12€ depending on where you were unfortunate enough to be born at.

Bought "Sherlock Holmes: The Awakened - Remastered Edition" for 2,49€. I'm not really familiar with this particular series but I like Holmes, Lovecraft, adventure games and top hats so...

FEAR 3 is a disappointing sequel, and a mediocre FPS (I would give it a 5/10). May be fun in co-op.

I absolutely loved FEAR 1, and at least like FEAR 2, so I'm kinda interested in seeing the end of the series, but even at $5 I'm a bit hesitant given that I've yet to find someone that actually liked it.

edit: Oh, and I went ahead and picked up FO:NV.

Any thoughts on Rage for $10?
