The STEAM Sales and Releases Thread

Doesn't work on my computer because of gfwl
Well the way they implemented Steamworks seems to be offering you two executables, one with GFWL and one with Steamworks. It's not like Arkham City where it's GFWL and additionally does Steam achievements, the Steamworks version doesn't use GFWL at all. Seemingly.

Hmmm. I will try again. I traded a bill's hat for it and that metroidvania game when they came out and haven't been able to play it at all.

It just acts like it starts and closes still. It did have 2 different launch options though. I uninstalled it and I am reinstalling it to see if that does something.

ASScreed is one of the midweek deals. Maybe it's time I tried one of these although I hear the PC controls are terrible.

You should discuss that on CAG! I love seeing everyone go apeshit when you knock controllers.

Bought the pack last time it was 75% off, played through the second one and 90% of brotherhood but losing will to finish it. I would say save money for other games/kick starters lest you really do not have anything else to play. The games start off decently fun but quickly become chores specially if your aiming to do everything; brotherhood made this even more painful by adding optional challenges needed to achieve complete synch. Most of the time they are pretty tame but if you accidently fail them by say virtue of miss-clicking, performing a shitty jump due to camera control being taken away, etc you need to restart missions completely not just to the latest checkpoint. Fuck replaying 15-20 minutes just to get to a point where i can begin to attempt a challenge (fucking war machine missions).

I did enjoy the second game for the most part (thought it was pretty cool that I traveled as much distance climbing as i did walking) and brotherhood introduces some fun combat mechanics, chain kills, groin kicks, counter-grabs (id est they tried to make it more like Arkham Asylum), assassin recruits, etc but it just kind of drags on after a while.

Do the Steam versions of Ass Creed still use that horrible UPlay crap?

Its not that big of deal besides being just another shitty layer of unnecessary crap the games still function when your internet is down. Its basically like having to run two copies of steam (except this one uses less system resources) to play the game.

Since I already smeared Uplay on myself for Anno 2070 maybe I'll break down and buy Assassin's Creed 2 and Assbro. Already had 1 since that was before they did their stupid DRM. I saw this recommendation for Assbro on Steam by a friend:

This game is the fucking best. Seriously. It's what the Thief franchise should have become. The story is awesome, the setting is awesome, the gameplay is awesome, the graphics are awesome ... I spent around 80 hours on this game and never even touched the multiplayer, and I want to go back and do it all again.

Assbro is clearly more Thief than Dishonored is!

That man was not a friend. He was an Ubisoft employee.

Assassin's Creed is a pretty good series, well the first one is kinda garbage, but II was a huge improvement over the first and each subsequent game has shown some improvement and refinement, keeping the gameplay fun while trying out new things (some of which don't work like the tower defense mini-game in Revelations). I'd say if you can stomach the Uplay crap you should definitely get 2 and Brotherhood for $10. Wait for III to be released for Revelations to drop to $5.

(Insightful review)

Thanks.

And I even try to be reserved about it because I know 90% of those guys are in their early 20's and console thralls. I almost said: 'There are PC gamers and there are console gamers who play console games on PC for better graphics,' but I decided against it. :smug:

But it's true -- most of the guys/gals there just get excited over the recent console ports/multiplatform stuff.

For what it's worth, I never had any problem with Uplay, except that the version that came with Assassin's Creed 2 (from GG) didn't want to update, so I simply had to remove it and install it manually. Problem solved and it never bothered me again. Quite glad I got them on GG because I might as well deal with only 1 DRM scheme and not 2 at the same time.

Hey this is a long thread and I am just wondering if there is some kind of thing I can use to keep watch on the prices of games I am slightly interested in for random blowout sales. On steam all you can do is wishlist stuff and check it manually AFAIK

I think CAG has something like that, actually.

Can set email alerts for games that drop below a price threshold. Never used it myself so I couldn't say if it's any good at it or not.

Edit: Given the only thing it's listing as a price drop on Steam is Vice City for $2.50 which is currently $10 I'm gonna say no, it's not good at it.

New Killing Floor map and weapons! Cool!

Wait? Weapons are a DLC you need to pay for? Now that's decline of Tripwire there.

Edit: ok, it turns out that some weapons are free, but others are in a DLC pack. That's quite a surprise since Tripwire has released a ton of content DLC for free while keeping paid DLC to only cosmetic changes. However the new weapons that you need to pay for are not just reskins but also upgrades of others one, sometimes quite powerful ones too, giving some unfair advantage to those who paid. I had no problem supporting Tripwire by buying their skins, and some of them are quite cool too, because that didn't impact the gameplay in anyway, but now …

Community backlash seems rather important and comes as no surprise. TW's argument is that the pack was created by a modder group and the profits will go to them, but the fact is that you still have the opportunity of buying powerful weapons with real money. Price is low, especially now that the game and its DLCs are discounted, but the principle still disturbs me.

AssCreed is good for what it is: an open world console action game with a cool platforming gimmick and stealth element. The games are not hard, and grow repetitive, however I find that the story, setting and characters are likeable - even if the plot is moronic and the motivations of those involved make little sense, the crazy ancient conspiracy/sci-fi angle is very easy to like if you are a sucker for that kind of thing, and their bastardization of history is still accurate enough to reality to get a few kicks out of it if you are familiar with the real-life individuals, events and locations involved.

I would stop with AssCreed 2 however. It's a good game but Brotherhood is basically the ultimate example of a "treading water" sequel that makes tiny improvements but ultimately is significantly worse than the original due to shitty story, rushed production and lack of quality content. My girlfriend loves Assassin's Creed and even she thought Revelations sucked, so I would stay far away from that one as well.

I would get more up in arms about this if I still played KF. Honestly after all these years they needed to have done something in terms of level design rather than just the standard X waves leading to the same boss. It's a shame because the gunplay and balance are great it just gets old really fast.

Yeah, I know it's very repetitive but at the same time I still like the gunplay and the teamwork aspect, especially at higher difficulty levels. Latest maps have also been a nice improvement by making it harder to camp too. It could do with some variety, like L4D2 does, but it's still fun. I play it once in a while when there is a new content update or I got an itch to scratch.
