The STEAM Sales and Releases Thread

Bought me some Dredmor and the two pack since they're so cheap I can't say no. I JUST CAN'T.
Dredmor's a bit harder than it was in beta, too. Apparently always being able to disarm traps was either a bug or for beta testing, because now traps are VICIOUS SHITS.

Is civ 5 worth buying for 17 dollars? I got an assload of games during the summer sale but I have thought about getting it for a while.

Yeah, Dredmor is a pretty decent roguelike. Nice character customization. Not too partial to the humor, but whatever. Gameplay is good enough.
Every time I start to get higher level and start getting interesting spells I die due to suffering a split :retarded: moment and die to carelessness or because of incredibly bad luck, i.e opening a room with 100 mobs. That seems to be the way I always go in roguelikes. Things start getting good and the gods piss on me.

If you're in the mood for some TBS, sure. I'm of the mind that civ4 is the best of the series though, and better than 5. 5's different enough that I still think it's worth playing, but if you've already got 4 with BTS then you're well off. Just depends on how much you wanna hang on to that $17. Some people (Racofer) get performance issues with the game being slow taking turns, but I never had an issue with that. Don't know if I just have more manly beefymachine, or if Racofer was running a not-removed-from-inventory edition without the latest patch, or what.
Also, assuming bandwidth isn't much of an issue for you, there's a demo on Steam if you wanna check it out before buying.

And now for some :smug: at Hoboelf, I just wiped out a 94 monster zoo on dungeon level 3 while taking no damage. The fire magic skill line is super powerful, assuming you last long enough to start leveling it up. Apparently they're going to be nerfing the obvious fireball skill next patch.

Heh. I came close to clearing out a huge roomful of enemies with Invive Thaumite Swarm, but I ended up getting it myself and dying because it does a shitload of damage and I had no potions. Gotta be careful with those spells.

It depends on what your frame of reference is. If you have played a lot of Civ IV, you'll probably find Civ V to be a step backward in everything save for visuals and (perhaps) combat. There are some changes you need to be aware of to enjoy it, especially if you're coming in from past games:
  • Combat is now based more around tactics and less around massing unit stacks
  • Managing happiness and empire growth is more important
  • AI plays to win, not "in character" like previous Civs, though leaders still have different personalities
  • It's a lot slower overall, especially after the last patch
  • No more religion to grease diplomatic wheels, or corporations; it's bare-bones compared to Civ IV
  • Terrain is less important than available resources, less city spam
For what it is, Civ V is a good game, but it still needs a few more patches and a real expansion pack or two to bring it up to the same level as Civ IV. Oh, and if you're into multiplayer... Civ V's is basically broken right now. For $17, I'd say it's a good price, and I don't regret buying the game myself, but I don't think it's a "must play" in the same way Civ IV is.

Nope. Especially since you have plenty of stuff to play already. If Civ 5 is $17 on a weekend sale you just know it'll be even cheaper in ~5 months at the Holiday sale. And, as other have mentioned, it's weaker than Civ 4 in terms of actual strategy. After Civ 4 (and expansions) they made the watered down/simplified CivRev for consoles/IOS. Then they made the $$$$$$$ decision to simply merge the two paths rather than work on a dedicated PC version so the result is Civ 5 being a simplified multiplatform DLC milking machine. It isn't bad, but it's no improvement over Civ 4. Eventually I will pick it up sub $10.

Except that it isn't multiplatform.

WELL HOBO ELF, now you get to be :smug: at me because I did an amazingly retarded thing. Was playing my wizard character, blasting the shit out of everything. Was in dungeon level 5 and had met nothing that was any threat. I was down a few HP but it was no issue, I was using a single square wall of fire spell and blasting monsters onesies twosies and destroying them. Used a lot of mana, but I was gaining 1 mana per turn. THE DUNGEON WAS MY OYSTER.

Until a monster closed in to melee range. Which I thought was fine, because I could survive probably 10+ hits from it with no issue.

So I started to fire wall the monster.

And missed the monster's square and cast the spell on myself, which due to my MASSIVE WIZARD STATS AND GIGANTIC SPELL POWER instantly killed me. My jaw dropped and I was stunned. STUNNED. That death was so amazingly stupid I don't think I can play Dredmor for a while now.

That's pretty much the only way you'll die as a Wizard in roguelikes though, isn't it? You're so fucking powerful the only enemy worse than you is your retardation.
Anyway, I tried to boot up Dredmor but couldn't. Latest patch fucked up my save. They gave me a steam achievement for trying to load a save file that is outdated. What the fuck. Salt in the wounds, bro. Harsh

Did you save inside a store? That's a known bug.

No. It's just that the patch made my save go dud. The achievement I got was this one:
Suddenly The Dungeon Collapses
This achievement is our way of saying "thank you for participating in our voluntary quality assurance program.

Could have sworn they put out Civ 5 on the Xbox -- it sure as hell plays like a multiplatform.

Odd. The latest-est patch only had "Fixes save compatibility with previous versions of Dredmor." in the notes. Would have thought that meant the saves were compatible.

 You know, if I ever saw something like this, I'm not sure if I would be tempted to strangle the devs or call them and tell them they're awesome.

Glorious Gaben.
Apparently during 75% off deals, games will pull in 40X more revenue. Not only that, they get INCREASED SALES once the deal is over. ALL HAIL STEAM. DEATH TO DEVELOPERS WHO BITCH ABOUT STEAM SALES.

It kind of makes sens or else they would not have the ability to keep getting these sales and EVEN get relative new games in on the sale from Publishers.

I laugh when the people on Steam forums thank/praise them for the sales. They aren't done out of courtesy -- they're done to make money.

I've heard the opinion thrown around that the sales exist not so much to make money as they do to give people a strong incentive to stick around. Combine that with the occasional free game, contests with prizes, etc. and you have a fanbase that's genuinely engaged in the brand. The sales do all the advertising Steam needs.

But you cannot deny that they are impressive sales. And fun. It's always fun to wait for the next day and see what is on sale. Although it's starting to get to the point where steam is running out of games for me to buy.

Thing is that outside of sales, Steam is a pretty bad deal.
Logically games should be cheaper if you buy them on Steam, as publisher has no additional cost due to packaging/production of DVDs and so on, while "shipment" is only the running server costs and bandwidth of the Steam Network.
Still, games are more expensive than buying them retail (no wonder considering they have almost a monopoly in this business)
and you don't get a physical copy/handbook. Although the latter nowadays is usually small or non-existant anyway.

Not here in thirdworldia. Even a full-price game on steam is cheaper than buying retail for me.
