The STEAM Sales and Releases Thread

MAN I'LL BUY ANY PIECE OF SHIT JUST YOU WAIT AND SEE

Worst game on my Steam list in my professional opinion is probably Saints Row 2, just because of how horrendous the PC version is. Can't even bring myself to play it. I guess I should maybe include Stubbs the Zombie and Kane and Lynch 1 on there, since Stubbs won't even launch on my machine, and K&L1 crashes so much as to be almost entirely unplayable.

I'd probably like it if I could play. :rpgcodex:
Red Faction Guerrilla was similarly (Though not as bad) fucked up on PC, but they fixed that one. They left SR2 broken. As a consolation prize, possibly the worst playable game on my Steam list would be Foreign Legion Buckets of Blood. Got it for a dollar a year or two ago during a winter sale and it's lame as all hell.

OR MAYBE BLUEBERRY GARDEN. Or The Path. Goddamn indie games.

Why can't you play it? I run it on a Windows 7 64-bit, the steam version (picked it up when it was five bucks).

It runs, but it runs like complete ass. Everything runs at approximately 1.2 or 1.3 times speed (Which doesn't sound like a lot but MAN IT ANNOYS THE SHIT OUT OF ME) and likes to jerk around when I'm driving, as far as I can tell from trying to load new areas in. And then for my monocled graphics whore eye, looked surprisingly ugly given the performance.

At one point I downloaded some cheat program that let me slow the game down to approximately normal speed which helped, but it still looked ugly enough and still liked to stutter while driving and I figured what the hell I don't want to run this program every time I launch the game and gave up on it forever and ever and I'm not bitter about it or anything. :rpgcodex:

Sounds more like your computer fucking up. I'm on a Quad Core 2,66 processor with a Radeon 4870 graffix card and it runs seemlessly. Maybe try googling a fix?

No, actually SR2 is an extremely shitty port. I think the mod, Gentlemen of the Row, addresses some of the issues, but I haven't tried it. I had, on my other PC, managed to play it, but it would start giving horrifying framedrops when having car chases and in some other instances.

I still loved the game, but it's ported by a bunch of monkies.

MHC, try checking Steam forums, maybe they have some recommendations regarding how to make it run better (idk, playing singlecore for this game, or something, I seem to recall tweaking it a bit)

Yeah, could be. SR2 is really odd about running, some people will have absolutely no problem, some people will barely be able to move. It's something hardware/driver related, I would guess, but my guess doesn't go into specific detail.

Did they? I got it for $5 and after about four hours couldn't stand it anymore. Controls were clunky and the game itself far too console-esque in design. Anyway, so long as we're listing shitty games we've bought on Steam (already covered a few of mine):

Avencast - decent premise but just really lazy design, art style, controls, etc.
Bioshock - shitty console game.
Foreign Legion BoB - just... shitty... flash game, bad controls, bad aiming, bad everything.
Greed Corp - not shitty but just far too simplistic to get me past the three or so hours I played it.
Irongrip Warlord - not bad, but again, just lazy indie game design.
Rhythm Zone - shitty guitar hero clone (only $1 in an indie pack).
Scourge Project - shitty indie console Gears of War ripoff.
Turba - shitty music game ($1 in pack).

There's some other stuff I haven't gotten around to and can't really say if it's bad or not.

I'm a digital whore too, I'll buy anything on sale if I even remotely think I'll play it some day. Unlike MHC though, I don't care what digital distributor it's through. I have games scattered across 6 or 7 different sites. It got so bad I had to make a spreedsheet so I could find out if I already own something.
So question for you, MHC, do you find that by whoring every game you can, you get less value out of your games? What I mean is, when I used to just by one or two games a month, I'd play the shit out of them. Now I just buy shit, play a few minutes (or never), then move on.

I don't think I've ever bought any outright bad ones. Ones I've never played, yes (due to Humble Bundle stuff), and yes, games that I wouldn't have paid more than $5 for... but nothing I've really regretted at all. Even if I get 5 hours of entertainment out of a game, that's $1/hour, not a bad price for some novelty in my opinion, even if I'd obviously prefer more.

Today's deal in the Paradox sale is 75% off all strategy titles (and even 20% off new release Sengoku). Entire strategy pack is $58.

Well, they fixed the speed issue the game had, where it also ran at an increased speed. Controls are still a bit clunky and the design's the same. It just runs at normal speed.

Honestly it's been years and years since I regularly would focus on a single game for a long time. Even before Steam I usually bought PC games on sale from online stores like Gogamer (RIP Big Rizzle), and before that when PC games were actually sold in game stores, in bargain bins. I've always liked picking up random entertaining looking crap in the hope it'll be a gem, or at least something I like. Most of the time it even works out for me.

And I still focus on the occasional game that really tickles my fancy, like FNV.

What's funny is that despite having unplayed games on my Steam list I just finished up a Gothic 2 replay... for the third time (wanted to try Paladin!). And now I'm considering replaying Gothic 1. Although now I'm in the habit of uninstalling stuff when I finish to sort of prompt me to play something new.

Happened a couple of days ago but Derp Nerk'ems Forever is now down to $20 list price. At 75% off/$5 I might see what all the horror is about.

The Jedi Knight/Dark Forces games a pretty good, but not on sale individually. Republic Commando is strangely decent as far as I remember, but it might not have aged well. Force Unleashed 1 is apparently fucking retarded on PC and takes 30 gigs, Force Unleashed 2 I think is supposedly a kinda dull generic game but doesn't have the issues on PC. Empire at War is sort of a mixed bag, the overworld map and space battles are alright (A large part of your entertainment depends on how much you like Star Wars spaceships pewpewing) but the ground battles are horrendous.

So of individual games that are marked down, maybe Republic Commando and Empire at War. Maybe. But you could probably wait for a lower price. And a deal on the Dark Forces complete pack.

Force Unleashed games are just CGI movies. Watch them on youtube. Dark Forces series is really good but you probably shouldn't pay more than $5 each for 'em.

I got Force Unleashed a while back on sale. It would have been a fun, but shallow, brawler, if it wasn't for the fact that the boss fights are ludicrously difficult and the combat is so repetitive and grindy. Not a terrible game outright, but probably not worth it unless you want to put up with a lot of issues. At least it's pretty.

Oh yeah, Mount and Blade 75% today. I'd recommend Warband. Can skip vanilla M&B since Warband is that only better, and you can probably skip Fire and Sword since it just isn't as bro.

Yeah definitely get Warband and ignore the other titles. Unless there's a mod for the original that interest you.
