Hmmm. The 7 refined is solid as trading currency, the gold paint is relatively solidly valued at 1 refined, the hats are where things get tricky. Minimum value for a hat would be 1 refined each, which unless you're trading with someone who specifically wants the hat the best you'll probably get is valued at 1 refined 1 reclaimed each. Ellis' cap being an exception since it was a super common promo, it's only worth about a reclaimed, maybe. Engineer mullet is new and popular enough you could probably do 2 refined for it.

So estimating at 80 cents to a refined and at the $13.50 single unit price to keep things tempting to traders you'd want approximately 17 refined. You'd scrape by offering the metal, gold paint, 3 of the name tags, and all the non-Ellis hats.
If you wanna make your offer more appealing you could chuck in the olive paint, dueling game, and Ellis cap as well. Which you might want to do since you're trading in non-currency hats in large part.

Up to you bro, but that's my estimate for a pretty attractive offer if you want speed and ease to find a buyer. And naturally you should use Steam Trade so as not to get ripped off.

Since it's a preorder is anything stopping them from doing the trade with me and then cancelling the order after the fact?

No idea honestly. I would be inclined to say they couldn't cancel the preorder once they've given the game away (Since Steam doesn't automate any order canceling as far as I'm aware) but I'm not 100% sure.

Edit: Oh, they updated the Steam Trade FAQ.

What if a game I received in a trade is fraudulently purchased?

If this happens, the account where the fraud took place will be suspended. Your account will not be suspended, however the game you received will be removed from your account. We will do our best to restore the items/gifts that were associated with the trade back to you. Please contact Steam Support if a game that you traded for is missing from your inventory or account.

So that covers if they used a stolen credit card to buy it, and I imagine if they cancel the preorder. It'd be a pain in the ass but Valve would get your items back to you.

Okay, last dumb question. If I wanted to throw in a $5 game how do you go about buying that as a gift that is tradeable? Have they changed the system where you used to have to either select a friend or e-mail the code to yourself? If you pick 'gift' does it just put it in some gift slot in your account?

They changed it, if you pick "Gift" at checkout it does the normal "Send to an email" and "Send directly to a friend over steam" options, and under that it has the option to store it as a giftable copy on your account, which is what you use in Steam Trade. So you would buy a giftable copy for yourself first, and then open a trade with someone.

Arrgh, this process reminds me how much I hate trading! Well, after digging through my backpack I now have 9 refined.

Heh, I'd just rather part with useless TF2 stuff than money. But fortunately some Australian dude with a good trade rep just swapped me a copy for 9 refined, 3 name tags, 2 paint, and 4 hats. Good to put it to use since I rarely play TF2 anymore.

Excellent. And yeah, that was my reasoning behind a lot of this hat selling/trading for games. I'm hanging on to most of my favorite hats and my complete pile of weapons and getting rid of the stuff I won't give much of a shit about.

If I wanted to be a massive enterprising nerd I could stockpile tons of refined, wait until a big hat-adding updated was released, and then craft hats like a madman trying to get valuable low craft number hats, but that's more effort than I wanna put forth.

And in semi-related news JESUS CHRIST. After preordering Dungeon Defenders, Orcs Must Die, and Renegade Ops, now I'm seriously considering Rage, Space Marine, and Arkham City. Rage being $26 from the ruskies (Which I want since a relatively trustworthy bro is saying as a shooter it's alright, and we could co-op). Space Marine being $20 (Which I want because I am a 40k whore and exterminatus coming up continues to tempt me). Arkham City being $25 (Steam preorder code from graphics cards on Ebay, and I loved Arkham Asylum). Plus Torchlight 2 this year for $20. And Skyrim which I've asked for Christmas. I'm getting overwhelmed.

Torchlight 2 is looking more and more like a December release... if that.

Which really bums me out. Been looking forward to that game for what, about half a year now? Think some of their earlier release date estimates were spring/early summer.

THQ week, today is Metro 2033 for $5. Sadly, I have everything I could want from THQ already, so no deals for me all week. I could possibly be conned into an RF: Armageddon deal if it was stupidly cheap (which it won't be). Maybe they'll be a Dawn of War day and I can grab the DLC I'm missing on the cheap.

Metro 2033 is overrated. The game is poorly optimised for one, I can barely run the thing at 30fps and I have a really powerful machine. And I still haven't managed to get out of the tunnels, they are so dull and the monsters just RUN INTO YOUR BULLETS, it feels like an old 90s FPS with some supposedly pretty graphics tacked on. The stealth is bad too, enemies seem to be psychic and notice you there even in the pitch black, no lights, and you crouched still. What is the point of trying to be quiet in these sections when it is easier to just mow them down with a gun?

I honestly haven't found anything to like about this game. I haven't got to the outside sections yet but if it doesn't happen soon (I just reached Market), I don't think I'll bother.

Also I read on Wikipedia that some of the devs worked on STALKER then left to work on this game, no wonder it feels like such a fucking rip-off.

Yep, same case for me. For what it's worth Metro 2033 is a quite fine $5 shooter though. I'd recommend it.

THQ sale... AGAIN! Think this stuff goes on sale half a dozen times a year. Anyway, not sure about Metro 2033. It basically strikes me as a prettier version of Half Life 2 mixed with STALKER. I have an antiquated system so I wouldn't reap the graphics potential (which apparently is a large part of the draw of the game) and it's only around ten hours or so. Not a terrible deal for $5 but I'd just as soon as pick up Isaac or Dredmore. Looking at the THQ catalog I really have no desire to get any of it... maybe the original Red Faction if it drops to $2.50. Same for Darksiders.

It uses pretty much the same engine, even some models and sounds are the same. It even still has the same unfinished global illumination that Stalker has too.

Also, you can bind a "Walk" key in the cfg (it's almost the same as in Stalker), but not from the menu.

And yeah, the stealth fucking sucks. Once enemies are alerted it's like you start glowing like a sun.

It's funny Metro 2033 is on sale, I pirated it a few days ago to try it out to see if I should buy it, not knowing it would be on sale. Anyways, it's a clunky shooter that just feels awkward. Guns are kind of cool looking, but enemies don't react when you shoot them (no pain flinch or anything, it's actually hard to tell when they're dead since they don't have noticeable death sounds and they just immediately ragdoll from a standing position, so you're like "is it just not moving or is it dead?"). AI is pretty terribad. I've only played it through the first couple levels, but the game honestly feels like an amateur effort that had a big budget.

Yay, Cities XL 2012 is finally available for pre-purchase. Nice discount for owners of CXL2011, too, -66%.

From the Steam store page:
Cities XL 2012 is the new version of the famous City Builder, which allows you to build, develop and connect together cities of all sizes and types on Cities XL planet. To build your cities, the version 2012 now offers a huge choice of nearly 1.

The info in the upper right column is almost a copy paste of the info under the 'About the Game' section at the bottom.

Cities XL 2012 is the new version of the famous City Builder, which allows you to build, develop and connect together cities of all sizes and types on Cities XL planet. To build your cities, the version 2012 now offers a huge choice of nearly 1.000 buildings and structures and over 60 different constructible, huge, varied and incredibly detailed maps.

They just seem to cut it at X amount of text without bothering to find a full sentence stop.

Bah, stop making sense of it. I'm poking fun of something on the Kodex. Leave this thread with your rationalizations and explanations!
