I think there is something wrong with the marker that displays which unit is a commander and gives you additional points. I can't see it anywhere in the positioning screen.

Also, the game crashes when I exit normally.

Wish they made the keyboard icons fit the general interface more. It's not like Sony/MS where they have to comply with the system owner's standards on how to name and show controller buttons.

Still, the fact that I can even bother to complain about that it's a pretty good port (although not perfect)

Wow, the translations are really liberal here. I mean, quite often the subtitle has absolutely nothing to do with the jap voices. It looks I may have to switch to English :z

BTW FUN START IN MISSION 7. PREPARE YOUR ANUS

Are you playing on hard?

Sadly hard isn't an option from start. You can play skirmishes on hard. But if i remember correctly there is new game+ so you keep your squad and start new game from start so you can redo missions and i believe those missions are on "hard" in story mode.

Extreme mode is locked until you reach ending. That mode is really way more hard as it alters enemy positions + adds a lot of enemies in interesting places.

Frankly i am quite surprised that in first 3 missions i lost 3 soldiers (not perm though). It means either i am rusty or i just remember that i had well equipped squad with ton of experience and my play-style was a bit different.

Tried usual scout all out tactic and i got annihilated just against two shock troopers.

Either way, mission 7 will be some teeth grinding tactic material. So prepare your anuses.

FUCK THAT GIANT TANK MISSION. The mission itself ain't hard, but you have to time right the triggers, or a invincible princess ass pounder spawn and rapes your entire squad before you can do anything :P

So is this game good?

How does a turn based shooter work anyway?

Hint: It's not a shooter.

It's turn based tactical combat game ala new xcom. Each character has AP bar that depletes as you move and each character has 1 action for each CP used (you get several of them each turn). When you move enemies can freely shoot you if you are in their line of sight (at close range) and this only stops if you try to use weapon/item. Then you have all time to target enemy in your circle. That orange circle tells you, your weapon spread. So if you get closer to enemy you will "fill" more of that circle which means more shots will hit.

First missions are rather easy but some of later ones are really hard (that's good).

I feared that nostalgia rosetinted my critical glasses on combat but it seems my fears were needless. VC especially compared to other turn based tactical games stands proud.

adding to what i said:

If you are fan of JA2, Silent Storm, Xcom/UFO and other turn based tactical games this is game for you. Also it comes with great story, characters and presentation. Also it's 30-40h game for first play-trough without DLC, new game+ or other campaign. There is also extreme hard mode for skirmishes which is unlocked after main campaign. I haven't really played that much (extreme mode) but that is really hot stuff for tactical fans.

This port also is great (-small "k/m get used to" problems) and it runs great too.

I missed this game's weird combination of legit serious themes (war is suffering for civilians, satellite states get fucked in big wars, war crimes...) with Animu silliness so much

Hmm, few people dabbling in modding said that game will be easy to mod and not just texture stuff but mechanics and stuff.
Looks like most of scripts and stuff are just laid plain in game files instead of being packed in some containers.

I think it's worthwhile to add it to our curator, and showing SEGA & jap devs that PC prts are worthwhile is always a good thing. I'll write something, we can update it alter when the full review is out.

I swear to God, it isn't there and it should be. It's a small thing but it still pisses me off.

I am torn between using my favorite soldiers (personalilty and appearance-wise) or using the crappiest soldiers I can find (worst potentials and stats).

Using the worst soldiers seems tempting to make the game harder which would make for an intesting replay, but I would rather not compose my entire army of little girls.
