I looked at the beta for the new Steam community shit, holy hell it's awful. For example, there was the old community page that listed happenings on your friends list, like so-and-so achieved such-and such, and so-and-so took a screenshot in whatever. Now it's that only with giant thumbnails of the screenshots and pictures of game boxes and all manner of stupid shit.

The game specific pages are pretty useless too. Again, a whole bunch of screenshots by random people and random links to mods regurgitated on a webpage. I guess it could be fun to take a bunch of burly nord sex screenshots in Skyrim and try to get them on the Skyrim list, but apart from that I don't know what the hell Valve was thinking.

Yeah I saw all that and couldn't care less about it. I guess it's meant to appeal to the facebook/twitter crowd that thinks people want to see every inane thing they do.

Probably because there is none? Are people really that eager to see HL 2 Episode 3 or HL 3? HL2 was an okay game but I don't really find myself pining for a sequel. Not when L4D2 and Portal 2 were wholly underwhelming.

Translate: he's worried about jumping over the shark in the context of HL3.

Ps. ... ha!

I recently replayed HL2 Episode 2 and its a pretty good FPS game with decent storytelling. The last sequence leading to the end credits was well-executed and certainly left me egaer to see where they'd go from there. Of course, the longer they take to produce HL3/Episode 3 the less likely we are to get something that meets expectations or that people will remember enough to care.

I still cringe when I play a more recent FPS and find the whole story is contained on audio-tapes left lying around the place (hello Bioshock) when HL2 managed to convey a story seemlessly into the gameplay years beforehand.

I personally don't think HL2 is a TERRIBLE FPS. Mechanics wise, it is fairly solid. Engine is good. (I HATED the fucking awful vehicle mission shit). The whole intro up to Pick up the Can is GREAT.

Half Life is GREAT. It is a wonderful game, but something just got lost between HL and HL2. Sure, those huge fucking walker things? AWESOME. Etc...

The creativity that spawned the first HL just seems to have gone the way of the popamole. THAT is something Valve needs to get back.

I could live with the vehicle sections if they weren't as long as they are... but they are... and oh God are they tedious and painful.

The Half Life series appeals to RPG fans because it shares many characteristics with the dungeon crawler genre (lots of atmosphere, good sense of progression, not much hand holding from NPCs, emphasis on puzzles)
