Gunplay isn't even PART of a game engine. The fact that something is made using Source doesn't make it FP or a shooter - you could make a computer chess game using source, or a text adventure or a 2D top-down turnbased wargame FFS.

The engine determines the game's performance, how easy it is to implement new code, how many objects it can hold before performance nosedives, RAM processing, save/load capabilities, that sort of thing. It doesn't determine sound, appearance, character reaction or any of the feedback that controls how ANYTHING 'feels'. 'Feel' is an issue of graphical and aural feedback - graphics and sound. The only effect an engine can have upon that is whether the game runs stably and smoothly while producing those graphics and sound, as well as the speed of development.

There are some engine parameters that can affect the feeling of combat and gunplay. For example, the engine often dictates the number of frames of latency there are between the button press and the gun firing. Also, the movement/collision system has a big impact on how forces "feel". Could be recoil or a hit that sends a target flying. When gameplay relies too much on a (Newtonian) physics engine, I often find it floaty and sluggish. Things like that.

I stand corrected, but -planned- is something else than announced or promised and that's a 2-4 months delay and not a year so saying "major fuckup/tech/console/blahblahblah" is rather meh. Maybe this had something to do with the delay or not.

You are thinking of strictly graphical (rendering?) engines instead of game engines. Game engines are basically bare-bones games that you change and add to to make your own game. There is a reason most unreal engine games look and feel the same.
An fps engine might have a default way that -for example- reciol works that developers don't bother to change, or a particly system that creates very statisfying blood effects.

Even a cursory examination of the above should quickly show the error of your post, especially re the 'most games with the Unreal engine play like Unreal'. 'Most' of them aren't even FP shooters - hell I'm not even sure that 50% are even shooters!

This 'game engines are basic games' is one of the crappest myths around An engine is not a modding base. Yes, most gamegines will include a tech demo aspect that usually shows off it's ability to render graphics with stability, but even that isn't an indicator the the type of games the engine is 'for' - they usually use open first person for this simply because it's aood camera and mechanics type for showing that off.
