Priests are NOT shit class.
Rangers are great. You smoked something really bad shitting on them.
OK, seems I was misunderstood, so let me repeat the universal truth once again: there are no shit classes in Wiz8, everything can work and become a great asset if developed properly. That said, there are obvious differences in power, utility, development pace and so on. And if we were to divide the classes into typical good/average/weak tiers then both priest and ranger would be my first picks for the last tier. And it's not like it's my edgy opinion, that would be me shitting on universally revered bishops, it's commonly accepted in guides, discussions and so on.
The nicest thing you can say about the priest is that he gives the quickest access to magic screen and armor plate. That's it really, apart from that valk and lord make him basically obsolete since divinity is the only school that doesn't need a dedicated caster to fully utilize it's potential. His standard pure caster bonus of +25% to divinity is nice, but apart from that his specials are just bad, praying is a complete lottery and turn undead is too weak + wiz8 has probably one of the smallest undead populations in a fantasy crpg ever.
Ranger takes the fall for the ranged combat being so unimpressive when compared to melee. I still remember my first complete playthrough with a ranger in my party. He was a mook so when I found the first giant sword I gave it to him just to see the results and facepalmed hard, cause he instantly became more dangerous with literally 0 points invested into both cc and sword skills. Yeah, with proper skills/stats pumped, a good bow and a bundle of mystic arrows he is nice, but it just isn't very impressive when compared to what other classes can offer, often from the very start. Gagdgeteer needs a lot of time to develop his ranged abilities as well, but he has all the gadgets and lockpicking to help along the way. Scouting is just something nice to have.
Bishop to cover alchemy and maybe psionics... Overall i liked more that one over ranger, bard or alchemist. Renewal potion sound really good to brew...
My concern is if i can develop all those skills with rogue: close combat, daggers, dual weapons, stealth, locks and traps, pickpocket... And i'm skipping swords and ranged...
Pickpocket is worth it or admitting i can develop all that stuff, maybe better to avoid it to get swords?
I would cross that "maybe" out, if you're taking bishop you're taking him for two schools at least.
The rogue will be fine. Yeah, he is skill starved for a long time, but he will be murdering mobs reliably from level 1, don't you worry. And you do want sword main hand + dagger off hand for maximum killing power, but dual daggers can work as well. Pickpocket used to be very op and cheesy, but with the latest official patch it was tweaked to be a utility skill that can give you some extra gold and items, but can be safely skipped completely.
Oh, and I would drop the idea of giving every character a backup ranged weapon. It's a typical rookie mistake that doesn't help much and creates some serious logistical problems (ammo weight and availability). Use the turns that mobs take to get to you to cast buffs, drink potions, throw some powders etc. Or just hit walk and then cancel it when the mob moves, it just works like a "wait" command. Also, you'll soon learn that many powerful weapons are cursed, cancelling the ability to use ranged weapons completely.
Just try to the damn yourself or drop it. I'm playing with one in a party now and I can see that it's perfectly viable as a sub for pure caster if you build it right, so you're wasting your time arguing the point with me.. I'm not using 2-3 bubbles; by the time I first got to the swamp my sam had 60 in at least fire and air, spells are just not an issue.
If you're factoring in abusing the game then there's no point discussing. Normally at the point of wrapping up the first visit to Trynton and going to swamp hybrids would have around 30 points in their realm skills and the elemental skills would be much lower. You can use the bank in Arnika to have 100 points in wizardry/alchemy + earth (and a free brain damage to boot) as soon as you reach it, but so what.
