Oh okay. I just want to play through the games (and through to 8 also). Not powergame and get 100% completion, at least this time around.

I think I'm gonna roll 4 Rawulfs and 2 Felpurrs to represent my gf's cats and my dogs =p

Wizardry 6+7 were not made just for playing through them. They were made for powergaming. The main skill you need for them is luck manipulation by reloading. The amount of work you have to do can be reduced by exploiting class switching.

Those games were made at the end of a time when nonsense riddles, unfair situations, manuals which don't really tell what you need to know and even offer misleading information and artificial game playing time lengthening with nonsense work were considered something good, "challenging". Such games were praised for long term gameplay by reviewers and patient level grinding or reloading was considered "skill".

So I don't think you'll get far with an "I just want to play through the games" attitude.

It don't run it properly afaik (the Pcxs2). game is a massive sprawling 10 level dungeon (infinite once game beaten) with all the wizardry classes, limited inventory, save only in town! great jap atmosphere great story its a real tribute to games long gone

In general it is advised to make your own thread not to derail someone else's when you want to play at trolling. Just saying.



Back to the subject and the OP question:
1. Class switching in Wizardry 7 can be overpowered if abused (repeating it many times to give every character skills like ninjutsu and max two or more schools of magic). It is obvioulsy very unbalancing.
2. The game is difficult if you don't change classes at all. There are also some end-game optional fights - very difficult (impossible?) with single class characters.
3. Changing classes more than one time can be tedious and sometimes requires additional grinding or reloading.


Advice (same as some people already suggested):
Set yourself a limit - for exemple only TWO classes per character as maximum. Three classes for some chars and two for others should work too - but no more than three per character imho.

I cant say much about Wizardy 6. In Wizardry 8 class switching is pointless. From overpowered (in part 7) changed to semi-useless in 8. Talk about overdoing.

I know, I have the game and have beaten it before. Was thinking of doing an LP though.

The optional fights are doable even with a single class party. Almost all effects (spellcasting, physical damage, special abilities) depend on the level of the combatants relative to each other, so just do enough extra level grinding and they'll be a walk in the park.

If you call different opinions than yours trolling, that's your problem.
Mangoose opened this thread to ask how to play the games and I told him that they're not made for a "just want to play through" casual playstyle.
Then I told him what to expect, that some oldschool rpgs like Wizardry6+7 are different from the roleplaying games of the last 15 years.

There once was a time when learning enemy formations was essential for playing shooters. Now such games are called unfair.
There once was a time when you had to guess which words exactly the parser wants you to type when playing adventures, when you didn't know if your idea was wrong or the parser just wanted other words. Early point and click adventures were scathed for the missing game playing time lengthening.
And there once was a time when the rpg elements (if you played W7 you know an example of everything I listed) I mentioned in my previous post were considered something normal and not criticized, rather the opposite.

Mangoose asked for advice how to play the game and I told him what kind of game this is, what he can expect. It's better to be prepared than surprised.

From thekdawg21's party suggestion you can see what style is the right one to play those games: powergaming which includes heavy luck manipulation by reloading (although I'd recommend a very different party). To get the required stats for ninja as fairie alchemist you need about 25 level ups for example, but if you're not afraid of heavy reloading you can switch at far lower levels.

The PCXS2 site doesnt list it as "playable" yet but a quick search in their forum revealed that it is fully playable using the latest beta of emulator. Download it and have fun.

One thing worth considering when planning a party is that there are some invisible stats like MP Regen which are permanently fixed when you select your starting class and stats. So if you want to use a character primarily as a spellcaster he should start in one of the spellcasting classes. You can also always run to the next fountain, but high regen at least noticable reduces the need to do so.

As low as possible. Lower level = less xp needed = faster skill building.

Remember, it is not D&D dualclass. Changing a class is not some huge irreversible decision you make once a lifetime. Changing classes is a constant process, ideally you do it everytime anyone is eligible, providing a combination is feasible with full party build in mind (i.e. don't change fighter into spellcaster when there is nobody else to stand up front) and you aren't driving a character into a niche due to low starting stats (lose that initial bonus to str or int and you'll spend ages building it back with no access to most classes).

In fact, the second consideration is an only one which justifies not changing classes quickly and sticking only to high-requirements classes in order not to lose stats too much. Switch that lizardman bishop to a fighter, go back to int 5, remain stuck as a fighter for months.

What about the first class switch, since I rolled stats for specific classes so that they could basically switch at level 1. My party's around 6~7 now and I can switch them all to the classes I planned for right now if I want.

You should think not of the class you're switching to, but of the class you'll be switching to the next time. If you have an option of a class you'll have easy time switching from further on, by all means, do it. If you'll get stuck with the class you switched to, you're in trouble.

Basically, it's all about the illogical strategy of sticking to the most counterproductive class-race combos, lizardmen mages, fairy fighters and so on, as to make class requirements for stats offset the default racial stats and avoid a sharp drop shoehorning a character into a narrow niche he'll have a hell of time climbing out.

Going to play Wizardry 8 for the first time soon. I was wondering which resources are good? Like latest official patch, best unofficial patch, and whether there were any utility mods that improve the experience?

Just basically whether there are any mods/patches that the community consider compulsory?

there are two pretty good mods for W8 (Dodd´s Mod with Daegan Tweaks, Lunastralis) but these are both large-scale overhauls suited for doods who´ve already finished the game at least once and just want to try something different in the same engine.

This. Other than that, there is little non-spoiler advice possible for this game as it support huge variety of party builds and compositions, just don't forget that it's extremely combat centric - plan accordingly.

Oh I will. I'm in the middle of reading the manual right now, but my main reason for choosing this Wizardry to start out with is that I heard what you said; that it supports a lot of party builds.

EDIT: I noticed it uses level-scaling btw. How ironic :smug:

It's not that level scaling is inherently bad. It all depends on how it is implemented.
