they are terrible. the best way to deal with them (albeit it's still a great challenge) is to lure them into the large room. Nobody can use magic there. If you need to cast spells yourself, get back into a corridor.

When leveling bishop concentrate on lores (divinity etc.), not schools (fire) - those can rise by themselves.

I did at first (before I really understood the system). This just resulted in my Bishop being completely unable to cast spells :(

So, update: I'm doing alright. I have trouble with a couple of encounters though, like the three Oak Saplings at the top of the Trynn-trees.

They basically murder my party with spells before I have much chance to do anything. So I wanted to check whether my build was way off:

Human Samurai (clean fighter)

Worlfthing Valkyrie (clean fighter)

Mook Ranger (clean Archer + scouting)

Gnome Bard (music ftw)

Elf Bishop (Divine and Psionic... with water and divine schools. Which I think is a mistake (the psionic-part) since most of those are in mental).

Faerie Mage (Fire and Air)

RPCs are Vi and Myles - I haven't met any other RPCs I think.
Magic screen + element shield. Also, psionic Hypnotic Lure spell is the most tactical spell ever, and, as fire based, it should disable the ent dudes rather easily, but it doesn't mean you shouldn't try to gas or freeze them. Giving your ranger a Woodsman Axe could also help here, all in all, I would start pumping alchemy as well as archery with your ranger - income, potions and cools spells await you. As usual, enchanted blade and armour plate should be up at all times, haste, bless and superman should help prevail in difficult battles. You can also try to blind them with alchemy spell or powder.

Hah, I don't have any of the spells you mention, except Magic Screen. I don't recall being eligible for any of them either. I've got fire, water, divine and air schools at pretty good levels, but no earth or mental.

I have begun on the alchemy-focus but it's a ways off yet before it begins to do anything.

Also; is the psionic-focus on the Bishop worth it or?

You need to concentrate on main spellcasting schools, not individual elemental ones if you want to have access to more spells. The elemental schools should only be boosted when you absolutely can't do without or don't know what to do with points, main spellcasting schools you concentrate on should get 3 points each level.

Don't just lure them into the anti magic area. Lure them to the entrance so that you can cast but they can't. Otherwise two tips:
You're not dead until you're dead. Playing ironman I realized one can turn lots of encounters in Wiz8 that seemed to be going down the poop chute with half of your party dead.
Make another 1-2 levels before fighting the saplings. :P

EDIT: Psionic is generally awesome but the spells are a tad too expensive, imo.

We fight to the death,
to the last man, to the last breath.

We fight to the death,
to the last furry, to the last dracon breath.

Yay. Thanks for the advice. Got another level, used clever (read: cheesy) tactics, and KICKED THEY ASS :smug:

The only thing I'm still missing is actually solving quests.

Ad. 1: Well, stading outside the anti-room myself while the big bad Oakies where neutered.

Ad. 2: Yeah, but they mostly involve odd Adventure-game thinking and "use random object on random thing" or looking all over the gameworld. I'm more interested in kicking some monster-ass.

Haha, oh it does. I'd just like it if there was interesting quests combined with it. But I can make do with monster killing just fine ;)

I just got out of the monastery and so far so good. It feels a little monotonous and I feel a little under-leveled. I hope it get's more exciting soon because I love the character system.

There are some kill monster quests. I wish you fun with the rat breeders and Brekkek. And those saplings are actually part of the Trynton questline too. You just don't get anybody saying: "Thank you oh mighty hero. I hope you don't expect payment because that would make you a villain. Wanna talk about my emo problems and have sex afterwards?".

I started a new party. A French sounding wolf lord, an Italian Samurai cat, a faerie bard with the deepest voice I could find, a british dwarf Valkyrie, a Scottish dragon bishop and an intelligent mook ranger. I love the voice packs... and I'm having much more fun now.

That I make do without fine ;)

But I do like some conversation and story - that's required for it to me a stellar game for me. However I enjoy the fuck out of this game, as I have done with KoTC, M&M VI-VIII, and similar games. They just lack that little extra something.

But I'm having fun. Thanks to the Codex for getting me to finally play this game, I'm not regretting it.

@Topher: There hasn't really been a point at which I felt "powered" or overpowered yet. I require rest of healing after nearly every fight, it's a damned unforgiving game.

It could be that my problem is how infrequently I rest.

My new party is doing much better and they can bring a lot more power to bear because of the Valkyrie, even with my faerie bard in the front row, and I'm keeping my ranger with a spear and my bishop with a staff so that they can support from the back rank. Also letting my bard spam sleep helps too. BTW can I really just spam that or does the lute have limited charges?

It requires Stamina. The yellow bar is required for attacking and special abilities, and AFAIK, you also lose a bit when you take damage. It's completely restored after combat - so yes, your bard is really that awesome.

Sweet... but right now he can only use the lute 3x before passing out, fucking faerie.

Try shifting to DirectX 6. That worked for me.

That worked perfect, thank you! I had tried DX7 and it ran like shit so I assumed 6 would do the same.

Stamina potions + "defend" combat option + stamina regenerating equipment + pumping attributes that increase stamina + stamina restoring spells
You don't get all that shit for nothing, you know.

That should cover you even with a faerie bard...

Well, the NPCs you can talk to are few and far in between, but they are rather talkative and often know "a lot of general things about a lot of specific stuff".

The story, while not something you should take dead seriously, also feaures a lot of events, often unexpected ones (you will know).

You seem to have found the Tao of Wizardry 8.
:salute:

Anything with limited charges will display the number of charges in blue, so you're safe spamming the lute, although you'll soon find a number of other, more useful instruments to spam.

Not entirely true, as it takes some time to restore it, and it can deplete outside of combat too, for example if you're running. A common trick to getting NPCs in places they don't want to visit is filling their inventory with the heaviest items you can find and running around till they drop unconscious.
They will suffer from lowered stats, though, won't be willing to leave the group until you get out of the dangerous territory and bitch. A lot.

Steve gets a Kidney but I don't even get a tag.
So, after reading this thread, I got the urge to go on with my Wiz8 playthrough. Somehow it's not installed anymore so I gotta reinstall and start over - which I don't mind since the monastery is my favourite dungeon anyway. Pure dungeon design gold.

Like many older games, wiz8 needs not to be installed. It just wants the files and 3rd CD.

What makes the Monastery so good, I thought it was mediocre?
