If there is one man that can make Obshitian relevant, it's him.

We'll see, though.

So what do you guys expect to change at Obsidian? What quality will their next games have that they previously lacked?

Nothing will change.

Obsidian will keep making clean copies of shit games by other studios and their fanboy retards will keep pretending like there is a difference between two quest compasses.

Obsidian didn't create a single original franchise during almost 8 years of their existence, they aren't going to now. Fail Protocol was itself ripped off of Metal Gear Solid, together with retarded characters aimed at schoolkids (I still want to know how anyone can consider Avellone not shit after an underage mute emo girl being a commander of a terrorist cell and extremely homosexual russian mob boss)

FALLOUT: an actual post nuclear role-playing game.

I doubt Cain would've moved to Obsidian just to hold a similar or inferior position to what he had over at carbine studios. He either got a lead position with design/creative responsibilities and/or uncle Feargus lured him with that IP that was too good to be true.

I would play Arcanum 2. Doesn't matter if they make it a TOEE style turn-based game, a FPS, RTS, WTFBBQ or match-3 puzzle game. The basic game mechanics of Arcanum 1 were already pretty damn shit, so it's not like a Fallouty transition to first-person would ruin the game. Arcanum's all about the interesting setting, unique presentation and good writing.

Which is why I'm less excited about these gentlemen teaming up than others seem to be - these guys did their best work in the days when you didn't have to have characters fully voiced by Daniel Craig in order to have your games be taken seriously but could instead get away with throwing enormous well-written walls of texts at the player. I'm not sure that the good writing of games like Arcanum could really translate that well to the New Era of fully voiced games without losing tons of what made them great.

Every time some change happens at Obsidian, optimitards start cumming all over this place with crazy ideas like an actual RPG such as Arcanum, ToEE, PS:T and whatever...
You *know* that they will make yet another irrelevant console brawler, most likely not even their own IP to begin with. However, with TC on board, they *might* start doing something new.... A MMO.

Right, so I've been out too much.. how was Dungeon Shit 3 received around here? I see an abnormal lack of topics about it, while other Obsidian topics were "discussed" to death years after their release.

Utilizing Bethesda's "brilliant" gameplay mechanics combined with awful art direction again? Fuck that, Fallout as a series is dead and buried as far as I'm concerned.

Obsidian has always had huge potential as a company, but I honestly doubt even Cain will help them overcome their inablity to deliver truly memorable RPG experiences (which is a shame).

That should tell you plenty about the game: too shitty to play/discuss.

What if the too good to be true franchise is Arcanum and they convinced Tim Cain to join so he could get free hands on the project

Shh...don't tell the other kiddies, but I think that last part about Arcanum 2 and the ToEE engine was a joke (as in, it was incredibly obvious that DU was joking about that part, but a click to the link would have made that clear as well).

As for the folk talking this up in terms of game settings and writing - you do realise that Cain is a programmer, and to my knowledge always was (through his time at Troika and Interplay)? He doesn't write jackshit, nor does he design quests.

But a guy with that kind of experience at making crpg has got to help, in terms of engine creation/optimisation and the bolts+nuts of implementing a design. That's often been Obsidian's weaker end, so that's actually a better thing than hiring another writer/designer.

Having the rights to Arcanum is great except for finding a publisher that would fund them to do a party based, skill/stat and skill/stat based combat game is however another thing entirely. And likely to never ever happen for quite a while.

Actually, as far I know, Tim Cain did writing and design work on Fallout and a bit on Fallout 2 until he left. His job was as a programmer then as well, though.

I think that Bloodlines 2 could be a realistic project for Obsidian. Over time it became a cult classic so it has established fanbase, its a first person game and that all kiddies want, also its gritty, mature and many more buzz words so it would be rather easy to pitch that idea to some publisher.

Yeah, but I don't think CCP will want anyone using the VTM license before they release their game.

Werewolf: the Apocalypse, on the other hand, is ripe for the taking...now that would be a good action RPG, let's cleanse the world and pile corpses. :bounce:
