I haven't watched the video but waitaminute- he has a game design degree?!
He does claim so in the video.

The one really funny part was how he tried to explain that Fallout 1 had to be turn-based because Interplay wouldn't be able to make it real time due to performance issues. I wonder if he ever heard of Darklands.

Jesus, gotta love smudboy's butthurt. Over thirty minutes of ego-bloating "arguments". I also love how he keeps contradicting himself - first stating that combat system is up to devs to decide, than proclaiming "but ,it cannot be TB, NOO!! Why?! Because I say so metaphysics! WHAAAA!!".

It's kinda sad how delusional people can get over a piece of entertainment. :rpgcodex:

but I can't help but feel he is caught in the trap of his game design degree

no way, what gave you that idea?

his listing it whenever he gets a chance as thought it lends credence to his argument?

I talked to some game designers who used to work at Ion Storm at a college campus years ago (long story) and the topic of game design degrees came up (I was still in high school at the time). They basically told me not to bother for a few reasons: traditional 4-year degrees are useful in multiple fields outside their own specific one while game design degrees are worthless outside the gaming industry so there's no fallback option if you can't get a job in the highly competitive game industry, game companies typically value experience more than any specific degree anyway, traditional 4 year degrees still look better to game companies than game design degrees, and nothing these game design degrees teach can't be learned on your own through experience and reference material.

Now, this was several years ago, probably around 2003, but I doubt things have changed that much.

A degree in game design is like a degree in journalism: studies for people who REEAAAALYYY want to work in this particular job, but have no idea how to do it.
Obviously, finishing these degrees will lead them not a one step closer to their goals.

Yeah well with degree, no degree, masters degree the fact of the matter is that he is a little monster who feel he has something to say...
You can make an argument over why you prefer somthing but coming up with 30+ minutes of bullshit to say that what you like is better is just so sad
Poor kid needs a hug, a job and a jug to drown and be released on his "Torment" :D trolololo

All the talk about "metaphysics", levels on levels inception shit and trying to appear as some sort of high heels monocled intellectual, and it seems His Degreeness does not even compute abstraction and implied actions. So much for that.

Or Diablo.

Ignorance and idiocy are a bad combination.

Diablo was actually supposed to be turn-based, but the computers at the time couldn't perform the complicated calculations needed so they switched to real-time. :smug:

I like how Fallout and Diablo both have terribly uninteresting combat that's made up for with addiction mechanics (with Diablo, slot-machine loot, Fallout, slot-machine gory deaths). Though only one of these is enduring enough to allow the whole game to be focused on nothing but.

There was a lot more than that, to both games.
