tb/rtwp aside, have there been any signals as to what inXile are gonna be kickstarting come the spring? im assuming they're wanting to keep their design team in the money again.

I'd expect a Kickstarter for Wasteland 3 some time next year.

I HATE isometric RPGs. I don't want to command troops, I want to get immersed in a new world, and nothing about being an all-seeing god ordering about pieces on a chessboard gets me immersed. AND YET I STILL BACKED TORMENT, and Project Eternity. Why? BECAUSE I TRUST THESE TEAMS TO MAKE GREAT GAMES ENOUGH TO TRY SOMETHING I NORMALLY DON'T LIKE.
What a weirdo. About as weird as people who hate action games but play role playing action games for the role playing. Fucking role playing gamers.

To be honest I am not a particular opponent of RTwP - some of the best games I've played sport that system (BG2, for example). But still, considering the amount of butthurt, the ill-argued assumptions and opinions on the part of RTwP crowd I am kinda glad it ended the way it did. It's heart-warming when unwashed masses don't get their way for once. And I am also happy that devs recognize inherent storytelling value in good combat design. Here's one hoping that we will see some meaningful C&C achieved through combat engine.

Also this:

Comment #4: You should implement both RTwP and TB and make it a gameplay option

This solution may sound ideal, but it wouldn’t give anybody what they really want. Area and encounter design needs of the two systems are very different. Designing for both would dilute the quality of the encounters for one or both systems, and most likely require so much time and resources as to impact the rest of the game. In a deep RPG like ours, where combat isn't even the focus, trying to implement two combat systems would lead to an inferior game across the board.

is very good news.

Aesthetically for "new PST" I would prefer RTwP, but aesthetics is such a small thing I never was bothered by what type of combat Numenera would turn out to have in begin with. Another TB game is always welcome, and a TB game which promises combat encounters flowing gracefully into and out of quests and exploration and no trash combat is double welcome. I am still waiting for InXile to prove themselves though. Good games aren't made with nice words or press releases. They are not just speaking nice though, but also speak right and true and from experience, so I really want to believe W2 and Numenera will be great.

When I pledged for Tides of Numenera - the spiritual successor of Planescape I never in my wildest dream thought they would turn away from good old RTwP which pretty much all the classic crpg's like Baldur's Gate, Planescape, Neverwinter, Icewind Dale used. I am also disappointed so many people actually prefer TB which goes against the very essence of how these old games were played out.

So when the vote came I was very surprised, but confident RTwP would steamroll TB, so I am shocked to see that the majority went with non-immersive, arcadish, slow combat that puts you right out of the game every time a fight begins.

Fortunately Planescape never was about combat so the change isn't game-breaking, but it's still a let down...

I don't think TB or RTwP are necessarily superior to each other, they're just different tools for different types of games. I don't even have a problem with RTwP RPGs, and I wouldn't have cared if Numenera ended up RTwP because combat is such a minor part of what PST was and I expected that to be true of this game as well. So on the whole, this entire debate has been more amusing than anything else for me.

I am a little glad that TB won just because some of the people pushing for RTwP seem like morons who understand nothing about game design.

Here was I shitting my pants that you linked to another "response" by smudboy. :D
I couldn't figure out a way to embed the video and have it start at the time I wanted, so I just pasted the link.

"Very essence" is my favorite part. Such a great flair for the dramatic.

Not sure what is better, the victory of tb or the massive butthurt everywhere.

oh god the butthurt from the rtwp crowd... only the butthurt from the codex should rtwp have won could match that assplosion, christ

Codex wouldn't have been butthurt if RTwP won, it would've been as expected (well, I certainly expected it to win by a landslide), and would conclude with a few pages of the usual snarky grumbling about decline and Biodrones ruining everything.

I certainly don't see any Codexer come even close to withdrawing their pledge over RTwP winning, like these babies are doing.

Well if WL2 and Torment do well, they wouldn't need to go to kickstarter for sequels but maybe a different IP?
If WL2 does well*, they probably don't need to kickstart anything, but again Fargo likes it. I would like to see a brand new IP come out of InXile if their games can live up to 80% of what Black Isle did. It will probably be up to the employees, if they're excited about doing more Wasteland work or want to do something new.

*in this case well would be 300k sales or more. I have really no idea how popular it will be nothing from 100k-1million would really surprise me.
